Discussion Can M/Lucario-EX Partner Well With Yveltal-EX?

So I'm new in the TCG scene, used to play way back when Alakazam/Chansey was a thing though but since then I only play competitively in Pokemon games but decided to give TCG a chance and I'm liking it so far!

On topic, I was wondering whether Lucario-Ex (and M-Lucario-Ex) can work along with Yveltal-Ex in a Dark/Fight deck or not?

I enjoy playing with both and wanted to see if I can win with a deck made of both. Since I live in a place where no regional contests are held, so it being top tier isn't a problem, I just wanna use it in TCGO in Versus and Tournaments and get as many wins as possible.

So any help is appreciated.

Yea fair point. So do you have any idea whether it can work?

In the current format I would say no. There is WAY to much night march and vespiplume for anyone to play something like that to great success. Hope this Helps!:)

I suggest to look into the current decks considered metagame, as they are extremely powerful. The present one called night March is amazing for beginners, and consists of basic Pokemon with under 100 HP hitting for 180 damage on turn 1!! You can find good lists if you look around on this website's forums, as well as the list of metagame decks.

Lucario and yveltal are EX Pokemon, and so your opponent gets to take an extra prize card. Combine that with the fact you need two energy to knockout a single one of their Pokemon, that is too overwhelming.

(Also. Is vespiplume gonna be at Canadian nationals??)

Welcome back to the more competitive side of Pokémon.

I've built and played both Fighting and Dark decks (not together, but different), each of those decks featuring Lucario EX and Yveltal EX, in their respective decks. IMO,

  • M Lucario EX is not a good play since there is no associated Spirit Link; so, you WILL lose a turn when you evolve to it. This could be very costly.
  • M Lucario EX's only inflicts 140 damage for FFF energy cost. Although this Pokémon has 40 additional HP than Lucario EX, Lucario EX can also inflict massive damage too without ever losing a turn.
  • Lucario EX's first and second attacks are extremely versatile and useful. So, the bottom line is: M Lucario EX is just not "deck worthy."
  • Yveltal EX is one of those Pokémon that has been a MVP (Most Valuable Pokémon) in a variety of decks for several seasons. It is an outstanding Pokémon due to its versatile and powerful attacks, HP and medium-cost Retreat Cost. Plus, you can combo it (as well as, Lucario EX) with a nice support group consisting of other good Pokémon, Supporters, Items and Stadiums.
If you were going into a Dark-weak and/or Fighting-weak deck-infested tournament, then a Yveltal-Lucario deck should do well. However, in the current metagame format, it may not perform well in terms of expected tournament game wins.

Although this may not be a "natural" combo - there's not a lot of synergy between these 2 Pokémon - one would readily think of, I'd encourage you to try it. I personally like and run seemingly "rogue" decks - sometimes, I get ideas that I have to just test out to see if it just might work... Just go for it and arrive at your own conclusion as to whether or not your deck will work. You might surprise yourself...

Lastly, consider drafting a deck list and then submit it to the Deck Garage for further review and suggested improvements.

Hello there, and welcome back to the game (although I'm hardly a veteran myself)!

Whilst I would echo the point that within the current state of the game these two cards are perhaps best incorporated competitively in two independent strategies (e.g. Yveltal / Zoroark / Gallade or Lucario / 'Bats), I would also heavily support TuxedoBlack's sentiment of "Just try it anyway!" because that's the fun of the game. Not sure if this is the place for it, but if you were to build a deck with those two cards as the centre, I would suggest the following cards for your decklist:

Pokémon:
Lucario EX and Yveltal EX of course, Yveltal (XY) / Carbink BREAK (FAC) / Landorus (FFI) for energy acceleration, Gallade (BKT) for draw support and as a non-basic attacker, and Shaymin EX (ROS) for draw support. Oddly one of the first cards that came to mind was Volcarona (AOR), although I'm sure people would object to that. Whilst M Lucario EX does suffer from the Spirit Link / not-amazing-attack problem, why not if you want to?

Items: If you're likely to run Double Colourless and Strong Energy maybe Puzzle of Time would be helpful, Battle Compressor is a must for the attack-based energy acceleration, maximum counts of VS Seeker and Ultra Ball are a given, and Fighting Fury Belt is probably a strong choice as well, although Focus Sash wouldn't be the worst.

Supporters: With Lucario EX you could utilise the amazing Korrina, as well as including the usual combination of Professor Sycamore and N for draw support, with perhaps one-of counts of Lysandre, Hex Maniac and others which you could access via the VS Seeker / Battle Compressor combo in a pinch. Including Gallade would also warrant the inclusion of Maxie's Hidden Trick Ball if you want to go that route.

Apologies if this comes across as super condescending, just trying to lay out my thoughts on what cards I'd consider essential if you opted to build this deck! I take a fair amount of offence to criticism of fun decks due to their (lack of) competitive viability, but then I don't really play competitively so what do I know? My point is basically just "YAY FOR CREATIVITY!" and I'd be interested to see what you come up with, hope I was more help than zero!

Well I've seen the Night March deck run by so many people already and it's extremely easy/tough! But I was looking for a more original idea instead of playing with a deck everyone is using. I know this is how top tier decks work, but I prefer fresh ideas!

You've been very helpful! I can actually see M Lucario Ex as not very effective and Lucario Ex is already very helpful himself! His second attack is basically a painful Shaymin Ex hahaaha. I will keep tinkering myself and see if i can make it work.

Come on! That was not condescending at all! That was SUPER helpful! I appreciate people too who look into the fun aspect of dueling and fun while deck building. Coz of you just keep using Night Marches and Greninja BREAKS, where is the fun? So I will use this deck skeleton you suggested and keep tinkering it! Thanks a bunch!

Phew, I just thought the "this card does this" comments may have been a step too far is all. I'm glad my point were of some help, and creativity and creating unconventional decks is what I love about this game, it really increases the fun as you say. But yeah, good luck with the deck and I'll keep an eye out on the Deck Garage for your first draft if it appears!

I don't think it's all that viable, main point being that you usually only split your energy types when the benefit of it is pretty high such as rayboar and such. That being said I'm sure you could get it to work, maybe run a thin line of Lucario EX or Yveltal EX and use rainbow energy for them since you would only have 1 or 2 of them. It would most likely be better to run a small line of Yveltal EX since he really only need 1 dark as opposed to lucario's 2 fighting. Also I would check out other yveltal ex variants such as mega manectric ex/yveltal ex. They seem to be a good pairing in some decks.
