Collectors: Does 1st Edition matter anymore?

I noticed that English sets no longer denote whether or not the print is first edition, while the Japenese still do. I wonder, even with the Japanese, does it make a difference? It would appear First Edition packs are not exactly hard to come by, so is there any value there? Why not just run unlimited like the US now does?

I'm a bit biased since I only collect Japanese cards that are in the first edition, but yeah, first edition is still important with Japanese cards. 1st edition boosters are only sold for the first month or so in Japan. After that, they print the unlimited edition pretty much until the format is updated (i.e., BW-on, etc.). In the long run, first edition is definitely worth more than its unlimited counterpart. What is funny is that (someone correct me if I'm wrong) Japan did not have first edition sets until the Pokemon VS set and America stopped having it around EX Ruby and Sapphire. So yeah, first edition is definitely a plus. It makes the collection more rare, if you will.

Also, just a side note, American cards do not explicitly say "1st Edition" anymore, but the reality is that there are still times when our sets have a "first edition." The only two examples I can think of are PokeBody Empoleon Lv. X from Diamond and Pearl (which was supposed to be PokePower) and the two different versions of Zekrom FA from the Black and White set.

Thanks heatrotum. I've been able to find some first editions fairly easily, so I thought they were always easy to come by.

Well, I definitely prefer them. Any idea why the US stopped getting first edition cards?

Wizards stopped the printing first edition cards because when a new set was released, the unlimited versions would often hit the shelves before the first editions did. Not entirely sure why this was, but it happened pretty bad with Neo Revelation and Destiny. That's why Expedition onwards is only unlimited. It would be pretty cool if Nintendo brought it back now though :)

Well, considering some of the issues tpci seems to have with releases, I wouldn't bet on them overcoming that issue either :p

Eh, we have enough cards with the regular and reverse holo sets for English... 1st edition cards now would be a nightmare!

Haha I do agree there. Maybe if we got rid of reverse's and had more organised set releases then a First Edition print run would be viable.

Kind of off topic but would it be correct to say that the error Hoppip from Dragons Exalted would be "first edition" since it appears like it's now been corrected?

I think a more appropriate term would be "first print." :)

I would classified as

Error class:

Corrected: When a card is first produced with an error, and later runs have a corrected card. The more valuable card is the harder to find one.
