Expanded "Counter Box" Taking 2-3 or 4 Prizes On The Second Turn

Notice: I do not have any Zoroark-Gx so i instead rely on Shaymin-Ex to draw. I believe that Shaymin-Ex and a few other cards in the deck could possibly be replaced by a Zoroark-Gx line in a similar Mallow draw Engine and reproduce something similar. Also note that in my list i will often use only a single copy of a pokémon i play. Feel free to add one more if you want more consistency on 1 aspect of the deck you prefer.

"Playing from behind is bad. Being prepared to play from behind is good".

Whit this important premise in mind, here below is my expanded version of the Counter Box deck. The idea: a deck keeping the Ninja Box idea but implementing Counter Energy with Mew FCO to copy devastating attacks.

I decided to make this counter deck because of the state of the current meta. Mew FCO and Sudowoodo with Counter Energy are very appealing to play now because they can OHKO Zoroark-Gx and Buzzhole-Gx respectively for 1 Counter Energy cost and win the prize trade. Has Mew-Ex is also gaining popularity Mew FCO becomes a nice alternative given that you use Counter Energy.

Since i decided to use Counter Energy in the deck, i also wanted to have the opportunity to copy with Mew FCO the best basic pokemon Ex and Gx attack's of the game. I also needed the deck to have Counter Energy Acceleration in order to do that. Shining Mew SLG can Charge 2 special Energy in a single turn. If you are behind this means it can charge up 2 Counter Energy on Mew FCO worth 4 energy of any type. This brings us to the question:

What are the best attacks Mew FCO can copy regardless of cost in a Counter Deck? Not to forget Dimension Valley.

Drawing Engine:
We will prefer a Mallow engine here to grab early on the cards we want for turn 2. DCE and Rainbow are good energies early on and Shaymin/Mallow will get you there. Your opponent can decide to play N but as a Counter Energy deck N is less likely to affect you down the road since you can opt for a 4 prize setup.

Energy acceleration:
Shining Mew can accelerate 2 special energy of your choice, enough to get every possible attacker up and ready for the next turn. When you play ahead you will want to accelerate DCE and Rainbow/Prism. When behind, Counter Energy will be key. When behind, 2 Counter Energy on Mew FCO grants you 4 Energies of any type meaning that it gives you access to every Basic attack in the game (as long as the pokémon you want to copy is on your bench).

1 prize attackers:
As mentioned Mew FCO and Sudowoodo BKP are probably the best current 1 prize attackers to use with Counter Energy (Psychic and Fighting weakness is a thing right now). OHKO on Buzzhole-Gx or Zoroark-Gx is just too good to overlook.

2 prize Ex attackers:
I kept the same attacking core engine than my original Ninja Box. Jolteon-Ex or Glaceon-Ex to start attacking on the second turn most of the time is safe and almost always a good choice. Back it up with Machamp/Comfey and Ninja Boy. Those will serve as a fight in front rather than behind core and gather the first 2 prizes you need.

If you fall behind, then Mew FCO can then be used to copy Flash Ray and Crystal Ray attacks for only 1 Counter Energy and Dimension Valley. This will protect Mew FCO, a weak 50Hp pokémon from dying or require investments from your opponent to take out for a single prize card.

2 prize Gx attackers:
Since accelerating 2 Counter Energy with Shining Mew on Mew FCO will provide 4 energies of any kind when behind on prizes as we have said, let's forget about the cost of the Gx attack we want to copy. We can hope to copy the strongest Gx attacks using Mew FCO with Counter Energy.

Guzzlord-Gx
- Glutton Gx (5D): 100 dmg
If your opponent's Pokémon is Knocked Out by damage from this attack, take 2 more Prize cards.

Definitely the attack that synergies best with the Counter Energy concept regardless of Energy cost. Can be loaded and ready for you on the next turn when accelerating with Shining Mew.
Guzzlord is unlikely to do more than just a bench sitter on itself here but Mew FCO will gain the opportunity to copy his Gx attack for 4 prizes. Since the attack is still rather expensive and not always reliable, we will also need a cheaper Gx alternative move to copy just in case we cant make it to Glutton-Gx.

Pheromosa-Gx
- Fast Raid (1G): 30dmg
If you go first you attack. Having the possibility to put a little damage early or Donk (1(Prism or Rainbow)Energy)
- Cruel Spike (2G or 1 Counter Energy): 60 dmg
Your opponent is now confused

- Beauty-Gx: Probably the second best Gx attack when you play from behind (1 Counter energy for a late game guaranteed OHKO)

Not only do we have a strong Gx alternative, we also now have access to Donk with Grass and Psychic (Mew FCO) weakness type with the Fast Raid attack. We got a decent attack that can do a basic 60dmg and confuse for the cost of 1 Counter Energy. Finally we have a garanteed late game OHKO Gx attack for either 1 Counter Energy cost or 2 Rainbow or Prism Energy. Beauty-Gx is a cheap alternative to Glutton-Gx.

That being said i did not have much time to test the deck out yet. My connexion as been bad these past few days preventing me from playing. I could still try a few games and successfully pull the donk against a few players and the 4 prize move against a Volcanion-Ex and a Turbo Darkrai deck.

Playing both the donk and the 4 prize move in one deck definitely feels epic.

Warning: Trying this deck might result in some serious brain injuries. Notice that i will not be help responsible for any sequel that could occur as a result to over exposure to hilarious moments on TCGO or IRL because of this deck.

4 prize move ;D

Further testings...

The deck consistency is still not too great. Having DCE with Counter Energy together hurts consistency too much with pokémons not requiring mainly (C) Energy. Pheromosa was good for giving donks frankly but the Gx attack and 2nd attack did not quite do the trick. Counter Energy to copy Beauty-Gx makes it only being playable for OHKO at a 4-5 prize taken condition which is very conditional and end up being less rewarding. We can still play a epic deck version that can donk, Stall and take 4 prizes and that is what this deck will bring us. If we want more consistency on this Counter Box deck we need to take a different approach.

Removing DCE from the deck seems key to consistency and means opting for a different deck core. We keep the Counter Energy/Mew FCO/Guzzlord-Gx trick in our come back deck but we take a different approach for it to be more consistent. Since we want to make Guzzlord-Gx and Counter Energy more effective as a whole, we need to ask ourselves:

What would be the best attack to prepare a Ex Gx pokemon for a next turn Glutton-Gx?
  1. Ideally an attack that can be used with 1-2 Counter Energy
  2. Ideally an attack that places a special condition on the opponents active pokemon so he can't retreat next turn.
  3. Ideally an attack that can hit around 100dmg (Glutton-Gx+100dmg = 200dmg which is enough to OHKO most pokemon)

If we look carefully at our options, we find the best suitor to be a precious Dark type:

Darkrai Prism Star

Nightmare Star (Ability)
When you play this Pokémon from your hand onto your Bench during your turn, you may attach 2 Darkness Energy cards from your hand to it.

Abyssal Sleep (4D) 120dmg
Your opponent's Active Pokémon is now Asleep. Your opponent flips 2 coins instead of 1 between turns. If either of them is tails, that Pokémon is still Asleep.

Not only can this pokémon accelerate Dark Energy, he can also for 2 Counter Energy do 120dmg and sleep (not 1 but 2 coin flip!). This is just the perfect attack we need in order to use Counter Energy and prepare for the big Glutton-Gx move.

Cannot be happier to find that the best suitor for the task is this fantastic pokémon. Let's see if we can make the Counter Box idea work in a Turbo Dark deck. This deck does not need DCE and can accelerate exactly the basic energy we need. The deck will also profit from Dark Pulse being even more op when playing from behind since every Counter Energy will boost Dark pulse for 40dmg!

We will just make sure to have these cards included in our Turbo Dark deck:

1 Guzzlord-Gx
2 Mew FCO
1 Darkrai Prism Star
1-2 Ninja Boy
3-4 Counter Energy

Strategy:

- No prize taken: Use Darkrai-Ex XY to take first 2 prizes.
- 2 prize taken: Setup Darkrai Prism Star on the bench with Counter Energy while putting pressure with Darkrai-Ex XY, Darkrai-Ex BW or Darkrai-Gx.
- When Darkrai Prism Star is ready (2 Counter Energy): move it on the bench and attack (120dmg+2 coin flip sleep).
- Granted Darkrai Prism Star has less than 50dmg counter on it and that your opponent failed to Guzma or pass the 2 coin flip to wake up:

Use Ninja Boy on Darkrai Prism Star to place Mew FCO in its place. Have Guzzlord-Gx on your bench and copy Glutton-Gx with Mew FCO for the win with a 4 prize move.

Darkrai Prism star attacks for 120dmg (Dark). Mew FCO copying Guzzlord-Gx does 100dmg (Psychic). With 220 total damage we can OHKO almost everything meaningful in the current meta except for those:

Zoroark-Gx: 10dmg short.
Gardevoir-Gx: 30dmg short.
Metagross-Gx and Solgaleo-Gx: 50dmg short.

So ideally we need Choice band for Gardevoir-Gx and Fighting Fury Belt for Zoroark-Gx in order to achieve 2HKO.

This is really cool!

I guess someone like me not having a Zoroark-Gx line will try to find some ways to still enjoy the game somehow ;D

-------------

Made the Glutton-Gx move work on my second attempt with this deck list below. (taking 4 prizes at 4-2 to win the game against another Turbo Dark deck). A thin line taking into account a Guzzlord-Gx move in a Turbo Dark deck might be worth that approach. I am sure some people playing more Turbo Dark could comment on this. Since the gimmick of using Guzzlord-Gx resides mostly in Darkrai Prism Star. And since we can only include 1 copy of this Prism card, i am not sure if it is worth to play more than a single Guzzlord-Gx copy in that deck. Darkrai-Gx is the pokémon that seems the less useful in this deck.

Remove it?
Had a Malamar-Ex instead and play it also for the backup Gx attack?
Focus on Glutton-Gx instead and add a Gladion since we play single copies of cards we need for it?

*Edited my last post to update list

Kept testing and here is where i stand.

Changed things a bit but most importantly:

+2 N FCO (forgot how good N was in a comeback deck)
+1 Colress PLS

as for a backup plan:

+1 Tapu Lele UPR
+1 Necrozma-GX

When the idea of Counter Energy and a Counter deck first came out, spread damage was the first thing that came into people's mind. In fact, spread is another very good concept when trying to build a Counter deck. As i was debating for a second Gx attack choice i remembered the good old Necrozma-Gx/Tapu Lele combo.

It seemed to me like a very viable option to include those 2 pokémon as a backup plan in such a deck. It gives more dept to the deck without investing much. While Necrozma-Gx fails against non-Ex and Gx, Guzzlord-Gx is pretty good on the other hand. This seems to cover a reasonably wild array of decks.

I still have Darkrai-Gx in my deck. I guess that he is probably only there in order to attach an energy. Not sure if it is worth the slot.

Letting you guys on this nice screen shot of me using Magical Swap after a BlackRay-Gx with the deck.

The guy could have left the game but he patiently waited for me to place counters around. I stopped trolling the guy after taking 6 prizes, i think i would probably have been good for 8.

This has to be epic. I would have been curious to see that guys expression. Seeing Guzzlord on the bench while being destroyed by Necrozma-Gx/Tapu Lele.

Seeing Nightmarch loosing like this is just LoL ;D
There's nothing like beating someone from behind.

3 prizes Glutton-Gx ftw!

*I tried with a few puzzle of time and Teammates. Just seems like with Teammates and Mallow, puzzles are easier to look for so it seemed like a good idea.

Copying Necrozma-Gx here (for 800dmg). He never saw that comming, he was sure i had a classic Turbo Dark deck.

Followed by double Puzzle of time to garb a Counter Energy with Ninja Boy for next turn.

Getting Tapu Lele UPR in the active with the Ninja Boy and attaching the Counter Energy.

Well played!

Would love to see a video of your deck in action. Got any posted on youtube?

Just formatted my computer a few weeks ago. Did not reinstall Game Caster yet but i will see what i can do. When i got everything setup i will post the Youtube link.

I got harassed by a guy on PTCGO (I won't write the name down so it stays anonymous).

He said that i stole his deck idea about trying to use something similar with Mew FCO/ Counter Energy/Guzzlord-Gx or whatever. When it isn't the Crown wielding an axe who cracks you nuts it is some other weirdo kid who thinks he has a copyright on some random deck i made for fun. If i made something similar to what you built, apologies.

I made a post asking specifically people if they ever did play something along those lines and no one answered. When i googled it i found no list either.

Feel free to post your deck list so we can see what you came up with. But for the love of god chill please this is a card game you know?

P.S: I still needed to report you on PTCGO for harassment and writing in CAPs mode.

--------------------

Testing with a 2-2 Zoroark-Gx line (i hate this Zoroark-Gx meta but if you can't beat them, join them).

Helpful in order to use Dark Patch obviously. Can become a strong attacker with Sky Field and gives mid and late game more consistency.

Taking a OHKO with Mew FCO for 4 prizes on a Buzzwole is definitely rewarding.;D
We fall 10dmg short of OHKO a Lucario-Gx for 4 prizes. ;(

Might be the guy who harrassed me on PTCGO will post one video for you. At least that is what he said.

He said he was gonna expose me like it was some sort of conspiracy. ;D

Now i understand better this documentary about video game addiction on teenagers. Some people got to love these little cute animals as far as to harass someone trying to have some fun with a random deck. ;D

Is this game rated "General"?

Not that theres anything wrong with using someone else's deck but mew/guzzlord is a deck I played against like 6 months ago also there was a pokebeach premium article on it around the same time so at the very least your deck is not 100 percent original

But at the same time, it’s not out of the question for two different people coming up with the same/similar idea without the other knowing about it.

But at the same time, it’s not out of the question for two different people coming up with the same/similar idea without the other knowing about it.

My goal was to share my testing time with the community on one idea that did not appear to be documented.

I really am happy some people do like me just enjoy building decks and share them with the community. Those are not always competitive or may only shine during a certain time but they are still fun to play and open new deck ideas.

I'm interested in running something like this in standard -- any tips? Minus taking out the non-standard cards. I can get to that part.

Loosing Dark Patch in Standard hurts energy acceleration a lot. You would need to accelerate with something else (Max Elixir?). Fighting decks are running the show until at least when Forbidden light releases so building a Counter Box deck for Standard might not be appropriate atm.

When Forbidden light releases, Psychic decks will probably get played a lot more. You might want to explore the idea of a Psychic Counter Toolbox deck then. A spread damage deck that can either use Destructive Light GX with Ultra Necrozma-Gx or Black Ray Gx with Necrozma-Gx. Baby Tapu Lele and Baby Tapu Koko? The new Malamar?

Malamar – Psychic – HP90
Stage 1 – Evolves from Inkay

Ability: Psycho Recharge
Once during your turn (before your attack), you may attach a [P] Energy card from your discard pile to 1 of your Benched Pokemon.

Those might be ideas worth exploring for a Counter Deck. As far as Dark is concerned, i would probably only consider it for expanded atm.
