READ OR DIE - Critique, Courtesy and Common Sense

Everything posted in the Fan Creations section (no matter what it is, a fake card, drawing, or otherwise) will have comments from other users. However, we notice that a lot of the comments left by members have either been unhelpful or simply spam. Such posts are looked down upon on PokeBeach forums.

Sometimes, it is difficult to know just what kinds of posts are allowed and which ones are not, especially in the Fan Creations forum, where the majority of posts are opinionated. This guide will briefly cover the kind of critique and praise we would like to see in our ever growing Fan Creations forum. ^_^

-----
Simple Rules
-----
  1. If you don't like someone's artwork- don't criticize it negatively. Of course constructive criticism is okay to do. On the other hand, do not flame others for constructively criticising your work. If you post a piece or artwork, expect it to be critisized.
  2. Respect the thread starter's rules for a game like fake card contests. You are not allowed to argue with whoever's running it, over things like if broken cards are allowed or not. That is going to get us nowhere but flame wars.
  3. You may NOT ban people from your topic. Under no circumstances. The only people not allowed are those who are banned from the forums itself. If you reallllly hate someone so much, you can add them to your personal ignore list. :\
  4. If you have nothing but praise for the artist in question, please don't fill up threads with short one liners. Spam posts are not allowed here. Instead, put thought and time into your posts.
  5. Instead of making threads for a specific piece of artwork you created, make a gallery thread instead. The gallery thread should be used to display all recent works you wish to share, from sketches to finished pieces. You (the thread maker) may update the thread past the 2 week dead thread time limit, so you won't need to make a whole new gallery thread if the thread "dies".

If anything gets too problematic or you're unsure of a problem...Please report the topic or send a PM to a moderator. The staff is here to help you! ^_^

Commenting

Here are a few examples of what we do and do not want to see.

Hey dude check this out its my latest piece. CnC (Comments and Critics) Please!

And these are the following comments on the artwork...

The piece is alright but I hate Wingulls. They do no good. 7/10 though.

Feedback such as this isn't really helping anyone. Yes, you may hate Wingull, but the the feedback above is not commenting not on the banner, but on the Pokemon itself.
Member said:
OMGGG <3333 I love Wingulls!!!!

Sort of like the above post. While positive feedback is always nice, it doesn't really mean much from such short posts, especially if they aren't even about the banner itself. Always try to explain what makes you like or dislike something about the piece. The comment should help the artist understand how their art is perceived and/or help them improve it.

Member said:
Good Job! I like how you combined Wingull with blue and white. It goes well with it. However you should be trying some contrast color and also add some depth to have Wingull appear to be flying. I give it a 8/10.

This is what you call a constructive comment. On the first sentence the poster has described what makes up the tag that locks his/her eyes, and on the second sentence comes where things should be improved. The artist can learn a lot from posts such as these.

I think this is an excellent banner! I love the color combinations and the positioning used. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more work from you. =]
Sometimes when we look at pieces of art, we cannot find things to criticize. In cases such as these, there is nothing wrong with pure positive feedback to let the artist know they did a good job. All that we ask of you is to refrain from complete spam posts, and put some thought into your message. If you can't find anything you dislike, then let the artist know exactly what you do like!

Writing

When judging writing, look at things such as grammar, build-up, and overall whether or not you enjoyed reading the work. Pay attention to the rules, and you will do fine.

FAQ
-----
  • I hate this piece of artwork, may I please flame this loser already?
-No, you may not. You can change the artwork by nicely telling the artist what you don't like in detail, or you could just not look at it. Whatever works for you.
  • WOW! Gosh golly gee, I love this guy's artwork! But I can't really think of anything besides a one-line comment like "I love your work!" What should I do?
-Tell them what you like about it. Did you love the color? The gradient? Go into detail!
  • I don't like this person at all, can I ban him from my topic?
    Nope. >:[
  • EwEwEw.....This total nub-face stole my idea! What do I do?
-Talk it out with him or a moderator.

If there are any more questions you would like to add here, please PM a moderator or myself with your queries.

I think this is about it. I hope everyone who read this from head to toe would not post comments that doesn't help a bit at all. It is in our hands to shape a better fan art section in this forum. So, go forth and lets make this a happy, fun place to get real and constructive comments on our artwork. ^_^

Thanks for reading! If you have any questions, feel free to post here.

RE: READ OR DIE- Critique, Courtesy, and Common Sense

Looks good to me.

RE: READ OR DIE- Critique, Courtesy, and Common Sense

Also, what I think would help is if someone made like an "art dictionary" for the fan creations because a lot of ppl have been pming me about what this or that was called, used for, ECT. I would be happy to make one, but I need to know if it's a gewd idea before I waste my time writing it :B

Not good to repeat this. I don't want it hammered into my head this much. >__> Looks pretty good though. 8/10

dmaster out.

RE: READ OR DIE- Critique, Courtesy, and Common Sense

Fixed

Hmm, well I don't see any harm in making an art dictionary. If you guys think it would be useful (or otherwise), just post your ideas and opinions in this here thread. :p

RE: READ OR DIE- Critique, Courtesy, and Common Sense

This should help a lot, as an artist I hate getting comments that are just like "Cool" Or "Ehh" When someones makes art they put a lot off time into it and if they want to improve, well they need good feedback, so hopefully this will help revive the art world a bit.

One little thing, I don't exactly now how to explain it but try and understand what I'm saying

Pure possitive criticism may actually not be the best thing in the world to give to someone actually. Although encourgaging, it's not always that helpful. If I made a banner and someone said
"I think this is an excellent banner! I love the color combinations and the positioning used. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more work from you. =]" It sounds like it is perfection, well in reality very VERY few banners are perfection. It's the little things that can change the face of the banner. If your commenting and you don't see any major issues, try and say something that might give the banner a new look, maybe better it. If I were commenting on the Wingull banner I might say:

I love the banner, the color combination works great and the text really brings it all together, good job. It might look cool if you added a snow brush on top of the Wingull, it could bring out an icy theme that would work really well with the rest of the banner

The Artist can then choose to do this or not, I guess this sort of motivation depends on the artist, but I have found it highly effective.

Anyway good guide, should help!

RE: READ OR DIE- Critique, Courtesy, and Common Sense

I see what you are saying here. I'll see what I can do.

RE: READ OR DIE- Critique, Courtesy, and Common Sense

I added the rule about the "no threads displaying a new piece(s), make a gallery thread instead".
