Do you believe extraterrestrial life exists?

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

I believe it was at the end of a movie (I can't remember which one) where someone was asked by a child if she believed in Aliens. She simply responded with, "If there isn't, then that would be a lot of wasted space". I believe that Aliens do exist, however if they are intelligent enough to come here they are intelligent enough to look down their noses (If the have any) at us and see us as savages, if not simply unworthy of their presence.

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

Is it evolved?
probably

Is it intelligent?
probably

Does it have technology?
probably

Has it visited us?
probably not

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

Questions for First Contact:

When would it be?
Like in 2000 years IMO.
What will happen?
We will discover a planet with intelligent inhabitants (not as intelligent as us).
How do they look like?
Humanoid seems more probable to me.

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

I think it's ignorant to dismiss the fact of life outside of our world. I mean, the universe is gigantic, and that's an understatement. Honestly, with space being so huge, are we really only alone? I doubt that.

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

That's the best point. Whether extraterrestrial life is small bacteria or supreme beings is another thing. But in the vastness of the universe, it's practically impossible that there is no life apart from Earth creatures. Scientists have discovered planets who can support life. Soon we'll know if life exists to some of them. But there is also a great number of planets we haven't detected and which can probably support life. So who knows?

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

You don't even know how close it is the closest possible rocky habitable planet. Then there are large moons that can support life. Just in the Solar Systme there are lots of possible places where non-evolved life can exist.

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

If they don't find us first, we will discover ET's by the time we can travel through worm holes. That is of course assuming that such a thing is even possible, and if it is it could take hundreds of years to achieve.

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

There are many probable habitable planets less than 50 light-years away (that is short between stars). We will travel between stars soon enough but finding a Life Form (evolve) could take much more time (unless they contact us and help us).

Is it intelligent?
Does it have technology?
Has it visited us?

Oops one more question.
Should I care?
You'll care when you're getting probed.

Though speaking of probing, why does everyone think if aliens do visit Earth, they would be unfriendly? If we do end up fighting them, it would probably be because we started.

I'm pretty sure we've yet to find a truly habitable planet outside of Earth. Some of them might possibly have liquid water, but those are way too big to live on without being crushed by their gravity.

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

Actually, habitable planets have been discovered. Of course, as you say, their size is quite big. but there might as well be "aliens" there. If life appears somewhere, it is sure to adapt to its environment.

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

If they were too big, there wouldn't be ground. Big planets are gas giants and some of them are in the "habitable zone". The bigger the object, the more and bigger satellites can have. There might be moons there which are habitable. There also 6 (last time I checked) known earth-like planets at some star's habitable zone. 5 of those are close (less than 50). Maybe life didn't originate there but it is possible for them to be habitable.

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

Actually, a planet can be consisted of rock if it is roughly twice the size of Jupiter. A bigger one is theoretically impossible to exist.
There are even more planets which are thought to be capable of supporting life. But what kind of life is unknown.

RE: Extraterrestrial life?

I know there are others capable for habitable life. The 6 I remember are superearths. I also checked after I posted and I found that there are 2 more on the same system. In the Solar System there is at least 1 asteroid on every place (except between the Sun and Mercury) where it isn't destroyed by another object's gravity. that means that it is highly likely that there are asteroids in the other systems.

Because the universe is infinately expanding, the chance of any of these answers being anything but true is infinately small.

RE: Do you believe in extraterrestrial life?

I was talking about confirmed planets though I knew there are billions of star in the Galaxy and for every Star we have discovered 1.6 planets (and we can only detect the big ones) so that means we have more Planets than Stars. That gives us 100 billion planets in this Galaxy and a fraction of those may be habitable. Lets say 20 billion of those are habitable. 20 Billion planets that can have life in 1 galaxy!
How many Galaxies are there? Just to put it like this, I will just give you this quote:

Wikipedia said:
The Virgo Supercluster (Virgo SC) or Local Supercluster (LSC or LS) is the irregular supercluster that contains the Virgo Cluster in addition to the Local Group, which in turn contains the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies. At least 100 galaxy groups and clusters are located within its diameter of 33 megaparsecs (110 million light-years). It is one of millions of superclusters in the observable Universe.

And then people say aliens don't exist.

wait, then does that mean theoretically that a multiverse does exist? And if so, does that mean that somewhere in the said multiverse (since a single universe is so huge to begin with) that there may be a galaxy where video game characters are actually real? (in other words, an alternate dimension) because that would be pretty darn cool o.o
