Pokemon Do younger kids know/understand the old generations?

I saw a couple of small boys looking through pokemon card packs at a store the other day, in deep discussion about Scolipede/Palkia/etc. and it got me to thinking - do young children even know/remember Charizard, Jynx, Alakazam, Typhlosion et. al? I grew up with the first the generation onward, and am 24 now, so naturally I know them all...what about youngsters who are just starting out?

I think it depends on the kids. Some that are newly introduced might only know about newer generations, but they probably soon learn of all Pokemon.

The difference is that older fans have a history of the old Pokemon. They grew up with them all. Newer fans don't remember how awesome Charizard was, because it was before their time. So, my answer is, yeah, they know Charizard, even if they can't remember him in his prime.

One kid I knew from church a while ago only knew about the older gens because the older Game Boy games were all he had to go off of until I gave him my oldest DS and lent him my copy of Pearl. However, he's just a case of not being able to keep current and not knowing the series continued into the fifth gen now.

Oppositely, I'd figure a lot of newer fans won't know about the way the older gens were unless older fans influence them somehow. The Internet is notorious for doing just that, though, even if it's some sort of indirect influence.

I think a lot of kids know the older generations, but if a kid was born into the DS era (does that make sense?) they aren't as likely to have played the older generation games. There is an 11 year old kid at my league who only knows Charizard because my brother plays a Charizard deck. And he insists on pronouncing it Chair-i-zard -_-

It depends on how they come across the series and who they associate with.

Yeah, it really depends on the kid. I think in general kids recognize the older Pokemon (particularly the ones from Gen 1), but don't really know about them as much. When they think Pokemon, sure, they think Pikachu, but aside from that, it's mostly Infernape, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Empoleon, etc. I'm sure that in a couple months I'll start seeing kids who really associate with the Gen V Pokemon, but I guess it hasn't been out long enough to see a lot of kids who have played only those games.

I was a lucky child, just about the right age for Pokemon coming out. My first memories are of watching Pokemon in England (in fact, I vividly remember the episode in which Ash battles Sabrina among others) when I was 3 or 4, so it's pretty much been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I tend to know the Kanto Pokemon better than most (and to an extent Sinnoh - the games where I really started to get into team-building and such- and some Johto; Hoenn I'm a little rusty on).

I think it really depends on the child's exposure to the game - when they started playing, whether it was TCG or Video Games, and what was out at the time.

God, this really makes me want to pull out my Blue and play through it.

I think that anyone who's a fan of Pokemon should and probably does know about the older generations. If they're a fan of the video game and only got started during Black And White then they should know some cause older generation Pokemon begin to appear in the game. If they play the TCG then they should also know some as long as they buy a variety of packs. If they watch the show and they started from Black and White then maybe they won't be as aware of the old ones. If they were really interested in Pokemon though they probably would have taken some time to look up some information about it and realize that there were tons of older Pokemon. I look at it like this.... There are TONS of people who like Pokemon. The older generation know the older ones better than the newer ones but they still know about the new ones, The younger generation know about the newer ones better than the older ones but sill know about the older ones.

Yeah I think so, I've been a fan for 6 years now, and I now every single Pokémon by heart. In fact, I started out with the older generations. (Red, Blue, etc)

But as for the newer fans, I don't know. I know someone who has a brother that has been a fan for a year, and know about all the natures and such.

I think I was lucky as a kid then. I grew up 1st watching pokemon (1st season and up). Then my dad would by me some cards, let me look at them, then put them in a place where I couldn't get to them (so that way I wouldn't ruin my cards. Which I'm happy he did that.). Then one day my dad came home, I was about 5 or 6 years old. He had a plastic baggy in his hand. I've been started to get into video games ( Sonic Adventure 2 battle and Super Smash Bros for the Game Cube) and sometimes asked if I could play his gameboy. He said he had a surprise and we sat on the sofa. He opened up the plastic baggy and handed me a copy of Pokemon Ruby and place a copy of Pokemon Sapphire on the coffe table. I was so happy! He said that I was a Pokemon game and that I could have his blue Gameboy Sp. When I opened up the game, along with my dad. I found there was promo cards! I gave them to my dad to hold and he placed them on the coffe table. We got our gameboys and started my 1st adventure in Pokemon RPG ever.
I think the only reason why I know lots more about the first 3 gens is becasue I simply grew up with them. I kind of know some things form Shinoh and Isshu. Kids no a days might not know of the past gens because they didn't grow up with them. There're not as exsposed to them, espcailly those starting in Black and White. But there's also the chance that it depends on how they got into pokemon too.

Lol I posted Missingno in the "Most forgettable pokemon" thread and no one got it for a while. Does that tell you something?

My nephews don't really know the first generation. It's weird when I'm talking to them and I mention Charmander and they ask me who is that. ._.

I have been with the series since the beginning, and I've seen two sort of contradicting things.

The first is a sort of reversion to the old myths that were present when Pokemon was big. Things like Charizard having a secret evolution that is part Dragon. Mew is impossible to get, unless you had the "old" (I kinda cringed at this) Red/Blue and picked up the truck, but he is the strongest Pokemon and nothing can beat him. If you get every Pokemon in the Pokedex, it lets you (insert random thing like "Go to a different region", "Turn all your Pokemon to Lvl 100" "Battle Professor Oak")

On the other hand I remember being obsessed with the characters in the Pokemon universe, which apparently younger kids aren't. When Pokemon was first big, there was all this speculation and theories about how the Gym leaders knew each other, and who was Ash's father. Everyone wanted to play as Ash, or Lance, or their favorite gym leader. Now I mostly see kids blow through the main story line, and discussing how many Eevee's they bred to get the best IV's and where their favorite place to EV train is.

Most kids that are at the age of 10 do not know about our generations of Pokemon because they have not been around long enough to know. The most recent for them would be gen 3 or gen 4. However I bet their older siblings know about them so eventually everyone will know but in all in time everyone will know XD.:)

I think younger kids these days would have a better understanding of the Pokemon franchise If Pokemon USA and Nintendo expose the franchise as much as they did back in the early 2000's, at least improve the Anime to where it's as good as it was when it first debuted or make the Manga series for Pokemon more accessible to the public especially online as well. HD I think has been hurting the Anime Industry these days and it sort of hurts that "authenticity" of the anime itself. Most Anime made past the 90's suffer greatly from this.

I've always wondered why the Anime series was more popular than the Manga and the reason is because kids back in the day grew up more on the Anime than they did with the Manga series which to what some people say especially nowadays is much better than the Anime cause it actually has a plot and you can actually relate to it I suppose in some way. I've always been a bigger fan of the Anime series anyway so it's kind of hard for me to adjust to the Manga unless I start from the beginning (I probably should. :p).

What ever happened to Pokemon movies in actual movie theatres? We haven't had that since the first few Pokemon movies that debuted in America. Since then every Pokemon movie that has been made is only in Japanese theatres where as the English one's only get distributed out on DVD or Blue Ray. Why does it have to be like that? Why should other kids shows like Bakugan and Beyblade steal Pokemon's thunder when Pokemon made more of a impact on pop culture here in the U.S. and in Japan? Now granted we lucked out when Pokemon became more popular than Digimon.

It's not so much as the younger kids know and understand the old generations it's that Nintendo and Pokemon USA aren't trying hard enough to reach out to them like they used to back in the early 2000's when the franchise boomed like crazy. The success of American capitalism can do it again so really what's the hold up? I know Nintendo and Pokemon USA can do it and If someone can explain to me the reason why they are holding back that would be great. I remember there was a McDonald's promotion for Pokemon Black & White and for some reason it didn't last as long as it should have. It only lasted for about 1 to 2 weeks tops before they changed their Happy Meal line.

When my cousin was getting deep into Pokemon, his only games were Ruby and Sapphire. As time went on it became obvious he didn't know anything about the first two gens so I taught him about it, showed clips, played the game, etc. So he has knowledge of the original generations now. Only problem I come across with kids not knowing things is at league when I use older cards in a deck or have them in a binder. Always that one kid who recognizes it as a really old card and starts assuming I can't use it in league, or thinks it'd be a bad card to use. However the best thing is when a kid asks "What's a Mewtwo?"

The major problem is the economy as far as the movies in theaters go and less people are actually going to the theater to watch a movie because movie tickets are an upwards of $20.00 now+ the price of gas and that adds another $10.00 or so+ the price of the concession stands. Add all that up and it is close to $40.00 or more now. This 15 years ago was about $10.00 so they have had to cut back majorly due to the economy. Also the Anime is more popular because of online access and most are watching online now and some are watching it on TV.

The young kids with digital Cable or Satellite may be able to get the 1st gen episodes come to think of it so they might be watching it now and think it is all new as those episodes are still on Boomerang at 3:30 PM weekdays so yeah alot has changed but mostly to save money in my opinion. Might be a long time before we are a low prices again.:)

I started old school, red version on gameboy-when pokemon looked weird and disfigured! LOLZ. I am 20 now ( well, almost- Nov 9th! ) and pokemon is the main event of my life since I was 7. I think younger kids who have played just the ds or wii games wont have too much respect for red or blue version LOL I know a few kids that told me they thought ruby/sapphire sucked and that Diamond and Pearl were way better. Also my cousin who is 10 is into pokemon and he asked me if I have ever heard of a thing called pokemon and also asked if I have seen the Giratina and the Sky warrior movie. He showed me his pokemon cards- some of them were fakes- and bragged about his rare holos including a regigigas. He didnt know who lugia, charizard, kyogre, or mewtwo were. I laughed and I told him, duuuude you dont even know what you missed out on!!! I explained how I had the comlete tomy figures of the first gen, yeah I have seen giratini and the sky warrior and own all like 12 movies before that and have original pokemon games and old school cards. Also mentioned how I used to watch pokemon before my 2nd grade class started and saw the pokemon movies that were in theaters. He shut up!!! XD I kinda wish that they could show the older tv seasons and re-make some of the old Tomy figure toys for pokemon to help the new gen of kids understand. When I have children I am gonna grow them up on both the old and new pokemon stuff so they wont miss out on the old and the new :)

I heard a kid pronounce psyduck " fizz-ee-duck". My cousin also pronounces grimer "grim-er." I have also heard "lu-gee-ah" and " ar-see-us" LOL wtf.

...seriously?

So being 6-8 years old just starting Pokemon has nothing to do with it. Got it.

Are you serious? That how I say them....I was under the impression that that's the correct way, or at least close enough to not matter.

When Red and Blue were released, people didn't have so much information about the games, there weren't so many (trustable) pages with content. That made rumors such as the truck or completing the dex to get Mew spread. I personally started with Gold and Silver, and remebered to be ASTONISHED when I discovered that Lugia could be caught in Gold and vice-versa. Nowadays, you can just search online were do you get Virizion and stuff. Kids know that Charizard has 4x weakness to Stealth Rock and is a UU and suck and yadda, yadda... But they don't watched the ol' Lizard tossing Magmar (WHAT?! That thing isn't even fully evolved!!) and letting Ash screwed at the league.

Coming to think of it, in GSC and RSE I knew all the route's trainers names, completed the nat dex, and reached like 720 hours of game play. With the more information we have in our days, no one (I believe that not even old schoolers) gets a thrill when battling Kyurem. To me, that feeling became much more obvious when playing HG/SS. Battling Red Gyarados, and catching it, just doesn't mean so much when people can RNG for Perfect IV's and Shinies. All the info we have, as much as it helped us, have spoiled the magic.

What's our conclusion?
It's all your falt,

Serebii.
