Pokemon Do younger kids know/understand the old generations?

Heh, when I was at UC Santa Cruz, there were a lot of nostalgic fans. I don't mind their nostalgia--I just mind that they assume everyone else is like them.

If I had a quarter for each time someone sees me playing Pokémon on the bus out of boredom, asks me what my favorite generation is, and express a confused shock when my answer is not the 1st generation, I'd go get another Emerging Powers booster pack.

If you are under the age of 15 (that's a stretch - I'd say 20 would be better) and play Pokemon, you are obligated to learn the old ones. It's not optional.

How can anyone NOT like gen 1? Gen 1 had such awesome Pokemon...

Gen 1 had the most lawlsy game mechanics too, but hey, it was their first time with the system. :D

Heh, they're even more dumbstruck when I tell them that the 1st and 2nd gens are my least favorite, and I'm 22. =D

My nephews don't really know the first generation. It's weird when I'm talking to them and I mention Charmander and they ask me who is that. ._.

This. Your situation is the exact same as mine. Me and my brother played big in Gen 1 and 2, and my nephew (his son) only really knows about few Gen 1 Pokemon (only Charizard, and he doesn't know it as the greatest fire type ever, just another Pokemon), it's sad, really :/

For teenagers that grew up in the Game Boy era when Blue/Red/Yellow just came out, the full effect of Pokemon impacted us.

For kids that are growing up in the DS era with DP and HGSS, they're getting no more than a sixth of it.

These kids may know the first 251, and think, "Yeah Charizard's cool blahblahblah I like Palkia," but they never got to see the First Movie in theaters. They didn't get to go "old school," where the original Pokemon roots were. For the older audience, we had all of that. We appreciate Pokemon more than them because our childhood embodied the history of Pokemon. The younger kids do not share this with us, which is why they don't understand the old generations.

Proud to be one of the "younger kids" that play the first gens.
I'm even trying to get an old GBA so I can play Gold and Silver. I really, really, wanted to play the old games. I remember all the Pokemon, I just feel like for some reason I have to play the first games, or I'd feel really nooby.

I started playing around Ruby/Saphire. I've played almost all of the older games now, including yellow. I really wish I could play back in the EX days of TCG, I love those cards. I would play Eeveelutions or Solrock/Lunatone or something.

Nah, I don't think most do. And you know what? It doesn't bother me if some 8 or 9 year old kid can't rattle off x number of Pokemon from generation 1-3 (or whatever).

My boyfriend's 9 year old little brother plays 4th and 5th generation games exclusively because that's what he knows. I think the amount of judgment passed on them by older players is kind of astounding. When you first started playing Pokemon when you were 5 or 6 (like I was), there weren't almost 700 Pokemon to remember. How can you expect a little kid to know and understand nearly 15 years of a game franchise in such a short period of time? I think that's blatantly idiotic. That's one of the wonderful things about remakes.

Now, when he's a bit older (Provided he's still playing), I can imagine that he'll get into the older generations thanks to the internet.

^ this. Besides, the perfect number is 150. This is the standard amount of friends most people have (and actually know). How many of you could remember the first 2 generations of pokemon, let alone 5?

You have no idea how easy it is to beat older players on wifi because they didnt know hydreigon was dark type or that lucario knows close combat. People should try to learn about newer generations too, instead of complaining about them.

It doesnt matter anyways, a kid is only going to know the ones they care about whether its charizard or haxorous.

I started with Ruby and Sapphire when I was about 6. I loved it! But I started getting Pokemon cards around the NeoGenesis Sets, but I wasn't that interested. Then, later, I started buying a ton of packs, and now I have a ton of cards! Since I got into it, I decided to get all the older Pokemon games as well and I enjoyed them a lot!

I think they do. The first and Second Gen was the greatest. That is the basis of Pokemon. A lot of younger folk know the basic first gens, but most of them might not remember some of the second Gen. (who remembres Snubble or Smeagle or some others in Second Gen?) Anyway. I believe younger people understand the other generations.

(True Pokemon Fans should know)

I absolutely hate both situations! I hate that younger kids don't know/care about the 1st gens and even say most of their designs suck (although this 1st situation is nearly non-existant in my country since pokémon basically died in here after the fad) AND I hate older players that just care about the first 151 pokémon, pretend that there are only 151 pokémon and are always saying the new pokémon look like digimons!

I support all generations and every pokémon, even the most pointless ones (like Plusle and Minun)...

Well, I'm an interesting case. I am a lot younger than a lot of people here (so I guess I could be grouped into the 'younger kids' part of the title), but that dosen't mean I don't know all 649.

I started to play Pokemon around when Diamond and Pearl came out. But before then, I watched the anime (Advanced Battle, Battle Frontier, eventually Diamond and Pearl), so I started out knowing quite a few Pokemon from the 3rd, 1st, and 4th Gens. However, I didn't have a DS, so I started with Emerald. I played the game 24/7, loving my Swampert and Rayquaza. I then saved up enough Gamestop giftcards from various holidays to get a DS, along with Diamond, later learning all the 4th Gen and some more 1st Gen Pokemon. Most of the 2nd Gen stayed a mystery for me, but the internet and later HG/SS helped me with that. I was active in the online Pokemon community by the time B/W came out, so I had no problem learning them.

Long story short, I grew up knowing just about all the Pokemon. However, I still sadly see the occasional kid the same age or 1 year younger than me who dosen't know who who Voltorb, or even Cryogonal are.

So I say that sadly, a lot of younger kids weren't like me and grew up learning all of them along the way.

^In fact, it's not that hard to know all the pokémon even if the person is just a kid. With only 2 4th gen games (Platinum and HG or SS - SS goes better with Platinum though), one can catch most of the pokémon that existed until gen V came out... So, I think there's no real reason for kids to not know the older pokémon (unless they don't have money for the games of course)...

I started Pokemon back in the Ruby/Sapphire and Fire Red/Leaf Green era when I was 8 and loved it. I got really into it and found out bout all the Pokemon, and if you showed me a picture of any Pokemon I could tell you its name and type(s). So I believe yes younger children can know about older Pokemon.

I remember that. It was the one time the local movie theater ran out of seats before the movie started, so we had to settle for watching it at 10:30 PM. Nevertheless, it's the sort of experience that's best seen on a gigantic screen with top-of-the-line audio equipment. I mean this with any Pokémon movie though. The stories were terrible (except Spell of the Unown), but the animation was of the best quality.

It's definitely possible for a little kid to memorize large amounts of things. They're the ones who'd have the focus to do so.

Plusle and Minun made a great introduction to the way double battles work. They're supposed to show you that in order to function in double battles, your team had to have synergy. You can't take a single battle team and put it into this new environment and expect it to work.

I use Plusle and Minun over Pokémon Battle Revolution, where they take out the Uber Pokémon that run rampant on that game's online. I personally don't believe that any fully-evolved Pokémon is pointless. Heck, I don't believe any Pokémon is pointless period.

lol, I just meant that they are novelty pokémon. But I don't hate them even though they're not on the list of my favorite pokémon... If you didn't notice, I actually said in the previous post that I support every pokémon...
