FALLEN SKIES

Pokémon (19):

  • 3 M Rayquaza EX (beatdown)
    4 Rayquaza EX (beatdown)
    4 Shaymin EX (card draw)
    2 Hawlucha (beatdown)
    2 Skarmory (beatdown)
    2 Altaria (protection)
    2 Swablu (evolution)

Trainers (31):

  • 1 Lysandre’s Last Resort (reuse)
    4 Professor Sycamore (draw)
    3 Winona (search)
    1 Lysandre (gust)
    1 Colress (draw)
    2 N (draw)
    3 Rayquaza Spirit Link (evolve)
    1 Computer Search (search)
    3 Mega Turbo (accelerate)
    1 Sacred Ash (retrieval)
    1 Escape Rope (gust)
    3 Vs Seeker (reuse)
    3 Ultra Ball (search)
    4 Skyfield (increase bench size)

Energy (10):

  • 4 Double Colorless Energy
    6 Fighting Energy

STRATEGY:

Go first and start with Rayquaza Ex. Use Winona to search out two colorless basics and M Rayquaza Ex. Bench the two basics, attach an energy card to the active Rayquaza Ex and draw with Shaymin Ex. Evolve into M Rayquaza Ex and end the turn. Next turn M Rayquaza Ex can start to attack. Altraia cancels weakness on [C] Pokémon and Skarmory is a nice counter to Safe Guard Pokémon. Hawlucha seems to work well since he can attack fast and has a free retreat cost. The stadium card allows M Rayquaza Ex to ohko and once it is discarded it allows Shaymin Ex to be reused with either Lysandre's Last resort and Ultra Ball or Sacred Ash and Winona. The trainers have been selected to cycle through the deck fast and to reshuffle discarded cards back into the deck.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza Ex / Hawlucha / Landorus / Shaymin Ex)

Have you considered running Mega Energy Boost? It certainly would create turn-one setup moments, and with Winona and Shaymin, you'll get it most every time.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza Ex / Hawlucha / Landorus / Shaymin Ex)

Hi Kecleon-X,

Thanks for the review. Did not know how to fit it into the deck other than removing the Muscle Band in favor of three of them but not sure whether this would be viable since Hawlucha tends to need it and the first M Rayquaza Ex also could benefit from it. What are your thoughts on these considerations?

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza Ex / Hawlucha / Landorus / Shaymin Ex)

I'm kind of confused as to why you went with Hawlucha? Why not run some bulkier attackers, such as Terrakion? That way you can better mitigate the Lightning weakness by threatening the Revenge KO (Terrakion with a muscle band can one shot M-Manectric EX). The bulkier non-ex's also give you the option to sponge a few hits and then dump them if the Skyfield is discarded to save prizes. In the same vein, why not run Jirachi EX. You can boost consistency like crazy, discard it with Skyfield, and the deck moves so quickly, your opponent can't afford to miss a hit on a 'Quaza by using Lysandre on Jirachi.

Might be worth sifting through the colorless pokemon in the format, for use with the Winona toolbox. Most are Fighting weak, but your main attacker resists fighting.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza Ex / Hawlucha / Landorus / Shaymin Ex)

Hm. I agree with Snyder partially. I think that, especially with the Shaymin change to the translation, I think that you can change a few things to make it more consistent at setting up. Now, given the fact that the cards and as such support for this guy have yet to be revealed as of yet, I'll try to make do. Here's what my list would look like if I were to play it:

Pokemon

  • 3 M Rayquaza EX
    3 Rayquaza EX
    3 Shaymin EX
    2 Jirachi EX
    1 Darkrai EX
    Subtotal: 12
Trainers/Supporters/Stadiums

  • 4 Professor Juniper
    4 N
    3 Skyla
    2 Winona
    2 Lysandre
    1 Lysandre's Trump Card
    2 VS Seeker
    4 Ultra Ball
    3 Rayquaza Spirit Link
    3 Mega Booster
    3 Skyfield
    3 Acro Bike
    2 Switch
    1 Professor's Letter
    1 Computer Search
    Subtotal: 38
Energy

  • 4 Double Colorless Energy
    6 Dark Energy

This optimizes it rather well, in my opinion, and with all the draw you have in this deck, hopefully you'll get what you need turn one. Which would be sweet.

Hi Snyder005,

Thanks for the review. The main reason for Hawlucha was that he can attack for one energy and retreats for free. In addition silent Lab is rather common in decks that also run Manectric Ex around here. Thus Hawlucha would be able to hit for weakness with silent Lab out. I also considered Terrakion but the retreat cost bites and I could not fit a second switch card to assist him. Will consider Jirachi but not sure whether he should be a third bench sitter or whether it would be best to break even on him and Shaymin. also looked into other colorless non-Ex but could not find bulkier ones that have lower attack costs and a retreat cost of two or less. Any ideas on this issue?

Hi Kecleon-X,

Thanks for the review. The basic Pokémon count in the deck seems real low and half of them are pokémon this deck does not want to start with at all. I would like to stick to twelve basic Pokémon in this deck with no more than two Shaymin Ex/Jirachi Ex to minimize the chance the start with them.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza Ex / Shaymin Ex / Hawlucha / Landorus / Terrakion)

Hm. Have you considered Tornadus EX from LTR? It might be a nice addition to this deck as it is colorless and it can attack for a DCE, and it's a nice body to have on the bench to take up space. Just an idea.

Hi Kecleon-X,

Thanks for the review. Will check out Tornadus from Furious Fist and Tornadus Ex. I like their low retreat and attack cost but their electric weakness bites but those are still the ones that look most viable at the moment.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza Ex / Shaymin Ex / Hawlucha / Landorus / Terrakion)

Hey, you beat me to thinking of a M Ray deck :p
Anyways, my suggestions:
  • -2 Hawlucha Why Hawlucha? It doesn't hit for Weakness on Fighting-weak Electric types, and while it does work under Silent Lab, you want to take that out of play asap. Besides, even with SIlent Lab in play and a Muscle Band attached, you're hitting for 160, falling 10 short of a KO on Manetric EX. I'd stick to Terrakion for this matter, so that's why I feel 2 Terrakion is good enough to take care of Manetric and M Manetric EX, as Terrakion is bulky enough to take a Turbo Bolt or even an Assault Laser while having a tool so it could technically take 4 Prizes.
  • -2 Landorus, +3 Mega Turbo I understand Landorus helps accelerate and sometimes it even hits Lightning for Weakness, but using your turn to deal 20-40 (or 40-80 if hitting for Weakness) to accelerate isn't a good idea considering Mega Turbo exists. If you use it for its second attack, Terrakion does it better.
  • -1 Ultra Ball Given that the number of non-C Pokémon has considerably decreased, I think 2 of these are enough given that you play 4 Winona.
If you make this changes, you'll have more room for switching cards, another Shaymin EX (3 is a good number imo, since I almost never open with a 3-of if I have 4 of something else) or whatever else is coming out in the set.

Hope this helped! :D

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza Ex / Shaymin Ex / Hawlucha / Landorus / Terrakion)

Hi Vom,

Thanks for thr review. Like the idea to run less Ultra Ball with the inclusion of either Tornadus or Tornadus Ex as another bench sitter. I feel that the deck needs twelve basics to be able to fill the bench fast. Removing one Ultra Ball will allow me to fit in the second Escape Rope without making the deck less consistent. Still hesitate to run more than two Shaymin Ex since he is a terrible starter but I have been tempted to do so. Would like to retain Hawlucha since he is a low cost attacker and I like the free retreat. Besides that I want to be sure to run a total of twelve basics in this deck and the number of colorless attackers is limited. Also decided to check out Mega Turbo instead of Muscle Band. It allows me to accelerate and I can reduce the number of cards faster with it to abuse Shaymin Ex.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza Ex / Shaymin Ex / Tornadus / Hawlucha / Terrakion)

Which Tornadus are you running?
And if you add a 3rd Shaymin EX and apply the other changes I suggested you're left with 14 mons if you include the 2 Tornadus.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza Ex / Shaymin Ex / Tornadus / Hawlucha / Terrakion)

Hi Vom,

Thanks for the review. I do not count evolved Pokémon since this deck needs basics to fill the twelve bench fast. The last modifications would have resulted in ten to eleven basics when at least one other colorless Pokémon in addition to the third Shaymin Ex would be added. The Tornadus would either be the non-Ex from LTR or the Ex version. An alternative option would be Skarmory. Still unsure on this one.

Skarmory
Basic Colorless Poémon
HP: 100
[C] Search for your deck for up to 2 Basic Pokemon and put them on your Bench. Shuffle your deck afterward.
[C][C] 30+
Does 30 more damage if there is a Stadium in play.
Weakness: Lightning (x2)
Resistance: Fighting (-20)
Retreat: 1

I will consider to run a third Shaymin Ex over one of the two extra colorless assistance Pokémon but I dislike the idea to start with one of them and loose a turn to return it to the hand. To me Shaymin Ex is the ideal sacrifical lamb once Skyfield is discarded because in that case it would also benefit me.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza Ex / Shaymin Ex / Tornadus / Hawlucha / Terrakion)

Oh true xD I forgot M Ray isn't a basic :p
Well let's make a quick analyze of both:

Vom said:
Tornadus LTR

Pros
  • Low Retreat cost
  • Helps set-up somewhat-Second attack can be used to power up something or to save Energy before you die.
  • Can set itself up with first attack

    Cons
  • 110HP is pretty low
  • Needs 3 Energy to deal 80 damage, 100 with Muscle Band.

  • I don't really see the point of running this.

    Tornadus EX BW96

    Pros
    [*]60-80 for DCE
[*]Nice math (80+120=KO), if Shaymin needs to attack 60+100+30=KO, could be used to set up KOs
    [*]Average HP
    [*]Low Retreat cost
[*]Discards Energy to use Mega Turbo

    Cons
    [*]Shares Weakness with main attacker
I'd take the EX.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza EX / Shaymin EX / Tornadus / Hawlucha / Terrakion)

Hey, why Tornadus?

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza EX / Shaymin EX / Tornadus / Hawlucha / Terrakion)

Hi Vom,

Tornadus is a colorless bench sitter that can be searched with Winona. I consider to use Furfrou instead since he is not weak to [L] like most other colorless Pokémon in this deck.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza EX / Shaymin EX / Tornadus / Hawlucha / Terrakion)

Which Furfrou are you talking about?
If it's a bench sitter, you might as well use Tornadus EX (LTR), since if you open with it you're not in a bad position, while opening with baby Tornadus would be troublesome.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza EX / Shaymin EX / Tornadus / Hawlucha / Terrakion)

Have you considered running one Sacred Ash? Since you don't play Ninetales, your opponent has a somewhat easy chance of discarding your stadium meaning that if you have more than 5 Pokemon on your bench with Skyfield, you'd have to discard up to 3, making Sacred Ash even more useful. Just a suggestion.

Hope this helps,
LoneWolf2113

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza EX / Shaymin EX / Tornadus / Hawlucha / Terrakion)

Hi Vom,

Thanks for the review. I want to use Furfrou from XY1 since it has [F] weakness and an ability that reduces damage. Tornadus Ex has [L] weakness and the attacks are mediocre at best. Furfrou seems to be a better bench sitter due to the different weakness.

Hi LoneWolf2113,

Thanks for the review. The deck runs Lysandre's Last resort to suffle discarded Pokémon and trainer cards back into the deck. It also runs three Ultra Ball to retrieve recycled Pokémon such as Shaymin Ex faster and to refill the hand same time. Shaymin Ex and other bench sitters are the ones discarded first and this even allows me to reuse them unless someone locks in a counter stadium with Ninetales but thus far the number of decks that would benefit from a locked counter stadium are limited.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza EX / Shaymin EX / Tornadus / Hawlucha / Terrakion)

Why dont you try to tech in a ninetails to lock the stadiuim into play and maybe some rainbow energy so you can attack with ninetails if need be.

RE: Fallen Skies (M Rayquaza EX / Shaymin EX / Tornadus / Hawlucha / Terrakion)

Have you considered Bouffalant PCL? Its attack discards an Energy from the opponent's Active Pokémon, its Ability gives it an extra 40 damage to Grass types and it has 110 HP. Looks more solid than Furfrou...
