First Card Purchase Advice

So I was wondering on what to buy for my first purchase of new cards, I have recently had the desire to start playing again, and now that I am much more financially sound then I was when I was 8, I can't decide if it would be better to buy a box of boosters and build a deck from those and then buy an appropriate starter deck to acquire energy cards of a specific type determined buy the deck I build. Or if I should just buy some starter decks and play around with them. I have 2 different budgets for each scenario:

Box of Boosters - $150, better cards, 2 week wait
Starters - $50, 2 day wait

My desire to play NOW leans me towards the starter packs, but to have fun building a deck the boosters would be far superior... All input is appreciated.

I think this is the place to put this thread... But I'm not sure...

Booster boxes would be better though depending on which box you got you might not be able to make a fullline deck as you will most likely only get 1 of each shiny and not all of them. And you'll probs get 2-3 of each of the rates.

And of course starters are limited to only semi decent pokemon so it's a tough call

Where do you live? You can get booster boxes online for less than $100.

I recommend first doing some research on the type of deck that you want to play. Then buy a starter deck that is closest to that deck. Then I recommend buying a Platinum Booster Box since it has most of the SP Engine and you can probably trade for what you need from what you get in there.

Well, the boosters I would buy online for about $85, I will prolly try to do a combination of the two... I think that will give me more variety no matter what type of deck I want, after I determine what that is haha

yeah 1 box and maybe 2 starters sound good for the energy and trainers , im in the same boat as you im getting the triumphant box and still wondering what starters i should get (drill point or maybe nightfall).

though platinum would be smarter box to get since it has more useful cards...you could get half a booster box from stop2shop if its in stock for like $65.

I just went to trollandtoad and priced out how much a vilegar deck would cost(single cards) and it was like $100+ so im thinking of just getting a box and starters. you could trade for cards you want i suppose.

goodluck!

Well, the danger with buying boosters and not a sealed box is that some people/places will open a box until they get all the LV Xs for example and sell the rest. Or they'll weigh the packs and open the ones that are heaviest and sell the rest. Buying a sealed box is the best way to go ;)

Weighing a booster pack??? I'm assuming you are saying that the holo cards weigh more? so obviously the heavier packs have more holos? That's really lame...

i am really not too worried of people weighing packs. its almost impossible to have a scale that is that accurate. the difference between a holo card and non holo is close to 1/100 of a gram.
also, the primes and good stuff are in the RH holo position, thus, even if you can weigh the packs to the 1/1000th of a gram, it wont get you the primes, only holos.

even if a person opens a booster box and happens to pull a lv x or legend, the rest of the packs still can have primes, other good holo, as well as staple trainer cards/energies

i personally would wait to buy a box or even two of HS-Triumphant. it contains the new lost link mini-set from japan and will dominate the format.
SP cards will see an end soon, so in the long run, newer cards retain better values.
