Flygon/Dusknoir, where to start?

Hi guys!
I'm getting rather bored of my current Sableye/Aggron build, I've been playing a few fun decks to fill the time between now and when I can get all my Genesect EXs and Virizion EXs, and Flygon/Dusknoir is the route I plan on going down next.

Pokemon - 17
  • 4-2-3 Flygon
  • 3-1-3 Dusknoir
  • 1 Mr. Mime
Trainers - 43
  • 4 Skyla
  • 4 N
  • 3 Juniper
  • 2 Colress
  • 3 Float Stone
  • 1 Ultra Ball
  • 3 Level Ball
  • 2 Heavy Ball
  • 4 Rare Candy
  • 4 HTL
  • 2 Catcher
  • 2 Switch
  • 2 Tool Scrapper
  • 4 Max Potion
  • 2 Virbank
  • 1 Dowsing Machine
Energy - 0

Total: 60

Strategy
Keep Flygon active, Lasers do extra damage, pick off bench prizes from Dusknoir's ability and use Catchers to keep something that can't attack/retreat active.
Thinking of adding Silver Mirror for when Plasma Blast releases, but let's see how the rest of the list fills up for now.0

You would not run any Energy, unless you wanted to use Celebi and Vibrava's attack, which does 50 and spreads ten to the benched. I wouldn't, personally, because that makes you a target for Deoxys, however I do think that running more of the Stage 1 Pokemon is a good idea, especially in this deck, where you don't have an attacker that switches into Flygon. You will want to max out your, well, Max Potion; go to the max on Juniper; go to the max on Skyla; max out Trapinch and Duskull and add in one more Vibrava. After that, I would also add in Super Rod... It's a lot better in this deck than you might think. After all of that is said an done, I would take out the Cheren for one Colress and a Tool Scrapper.

Here comes the tricky bit; figuring out that Ace Spec of yours. Now, Dowsing Machine is good, but Life Dew in this deck really adds to that ability to outlast your opponent. The Ace Spec I use is actually Computer Search, as to gain the ability for a more consistent turn 2 setup, however, Dowsing Machine is great because you can Juniper a Candy, draw into a Flygon/Dusknoir and Dowsing Machine for the Candy, as well as the ability for a fifth Max Potion. It is up to you, but my personal choice is Computer Search.

I'd suggest Beach if you can get it, it really makes the deck tick. Play Max Potion, as it's really really good. It works especially well if you try Rock Guard as your ACE SPEC- if you keep alive with Max Potion, you can rack up damage every time they attack you.

Last season, I built and played different versions of this deck. In those cases where I didn't have a starting attacker that could inflict damage while I setup, my opponents were able to get early prizes, minimize their benches, and typically win on time. When you consider playing against big HP Poké (like in many decks in the current format), you may not have enough time to spread sufficient damage in order to KO enough opponent's Poké to win the game.

IMHO, you will need a good starting Poké like Landorus EX to spread early while you setup.

I'd also suggest adding at least 3 Level Balls to ensure you can place multiple Trapinch and Duskull onto your bench. Duskull will be the primary Catcher targets.

Consider replacing 2 Float Stone with Switch. More players will be running Tool Scrapper, IMHO.

Consider replacing the Cheren with Colress. This will provide greater card draw support, IMHO, since most players are running full bench decks.

I hope you find these comments helpful.

I've taken almost all the comments made and put them in, and I've filled out my list now. This is what I have currently built, and it's absolutely slaughtering my girlfriend's Zapdos EX/Thundurus EX/Umbreon deck!

Oh, and, Ultra Ball is so low when I know it should be much higher because I realised I don't have that many at all. Boy, am I glad it's getting a reprint in PLB...

I'm thinking of making a Flygon Deck as well, though I was going to go the Celebi/Vibrava route, as I doubt Flygon by itself (no Chandelure once new Format kicks in) will be able to do sufficient damage fast enough to knock Pokemon out. Especially if the enemy doesn't Bench tons of Pokemon.

I think Beach is a must if you're going the no Energy route though.

Chandelure was a shiny in NXD, it'll still be legal. Might try a 2-0-2 of it...

Good point. Cursed Shadow Chandelure, as well as Flame Burst Chandelure, both can provide some very interesting deck dynamics.

Assuming you'll want to mainitain the no energy deck aspect, I'd suggest you consider replacing 2 of your Max Potion with Switch. (more players are running Tool Scrapper now). With Switch, you'll be able to promote a benched Chandy, Cursed Shadow, and then bench it for another Chandy (in order to Cursed Shadow again), and finally Switch Flygon back to active just before the end of your turn.

Another very cool aspect of the revised deck, is that the Duskull probably would not be the sole primary Catcher target. Benched Litwick would "share" that spotlight, resulting in giving you perhaps more options.

Your Poké lines would need to change too should you decide to incorporate Chandy. Initially, I'd start with:

4-1-3 Flygon
2-0-2 Dusknoir
3-1-3 Chandelure (Cursed Shadow)
2 Ditto (to "mask" your Poké and keep your opponent guessing what you might drop next)

Also, if Virizion EX become a popular tech, then your Ht Laser and VCG are not as efective; so, some spots may open up.

Should be a interesting deck to play.

If you can't afford a Tropical Beach, and since Virizion will pretty much make HTL/Virbank useless in a huge chunk of match-ups, I'd consider Skyarrow Bridge. Since people will be running at least 2-3 Tool Scrappers in any Deck, Float Stone probably won't last. Skyarrow Bridge gives you another way to switch Pokemon to make use of their Ability, or if Catchered, while also being a counter-Stadium if need be. (Though Tropical Beach would be the best option still, in my opinion)

And wow, I didn't realize Chandelure was reprinted in ND, I thought it was NV only. I was getting worried for nothing! Thanks for letting me know. :p

Have you considered Rock Guard as the Ace-Spec? I know with Tool Scrappers being a big thing soon, it'll be less effective. But either preventing your enemy from attacking, or doing 60 damage, is quite fun :p

Or you could go with a Computer Search to make it easier to set-up, since you'd be running 3 Stage 2 lines. Getting all of the necessary Pokemon AND Rare Candies will be tricky..

I'm thinking something along these lines:
Pokemon: 24
4-1-3 chandelure
4-1-3 flygon
3-1-2 dusknoir
2 mr. mime

Trainers: 36
4 n
4 skyla
4 rare candy
4 max potion
4 switch
3 juniper
3 tropical beach
2 level ball
2 ultra ball
2 float stone
2 tool scrapper
1 catcher
1 computer search

Less drawing Supporters as there is Beach. Catcher is only 1 since this Deck uses no Energy it only serves as more of a delaying tactic to force an opponent to Retreat.

The other thing I see people do with Flygon is play it with cards that attack & then say to switch with one of your benched Pokemon. That way you get the attack damage plus the Flygon spread at end of turn. Why a lot of people like the Celebi EX - not only lets you use Vibrava attack (if using energy option), but can attack with Celebi for 60 and then switches back for Flygon. Have also seen it in Deck & Cover decks.

ND Accelgor hit for 50 damage; the defending Poké was then paralyzed and poisoned; and then you shuffled Accelgor (as well as the attached energy and its basic) back into your deck. At this point, you'd promote Flygon for the between turn damage counter drop. Very nice combo.

Mew EX was also run in the deck too.

Might I suggest a 1-1 or 2-2 line of Drifblim PLB? This does fit along the lines of 0 energy considering you are facing plasma or even VirGen. It would make a neat tech.
