I was just wondering about the different types of formats there are out there. I have seen unlimited, modified, and limited on posts but i don't understand what they mean or what cards they include along with the HP-On and DP-On or even DX-On. Someone please help me!

The format changes after the World Championships every year. Rotating out certain sets so that they cannot be used anymore.

Unlimited means any and all Pokemon Trading Cards can be used, except Slowking and Sneasel from Neo Genesis. Unless your TO allows them.

There is also Unlimited RS-On. Which means only cards from the PUSA era, in this case, Ruby/Sapphire on may be used. That is still alot of sets.

Modified means the current format. Which in this case is HP-onwards. This basically means Holon Phantoms, and every set after that, can be used.

There are two different taxonomies for tournament types:
  • Modified (only recent sets legal) or Unlimited (all cards allowed)
  • Constructed (players bring their own pre-built decks) or Limited (players receive a pool of cards at the event and construct a deck out of only those)
So yes, you can actually have an Unlimited-Limited tournament :) But the designation is somewhat worthless -- a Limited tournament is typically a draft event using packs from a single set.

All the formats are outlined in the Official Tournament Formats document.

In addition to what has already been said, I want to add that this pdf is another great way to make sure the cards you want to use are Modified legal. Any set not mentioned in this list is legal. It also gives you a list of older cards that you can still use since they were reprinted.
