Discussion Garbodor

I think my biggest problem with Garbodor is it isn't future proof. Since the game now has a ban list, it could get a ban, just to make the game more diverse but assuming nothing in Standard is banned, we have this card for two years, meaning this card is always a thorn in the player base's side. The card was made for the here and now, which is what I told everyone would happen if XY is allowed to exist in a SM format. This is why I want Evolutions-On because it means less thing like Garbodor will be made just to beat cards that shouldn't exist in Standard.

I do like that the game is slower as a result but Basic Pokemon are so powerful now that you can't afford to play slow so you can beat Garbodor because they play other things to beat slow playing. Everything kind of feels like a mess right now.

Things will work themselves out. Someone will take a deck with like 10 Items to a tournament just to kill Garb, whatever consistency method they used will become common knowledge and Garbodor will die. This is why Garb being built for the here and now makes sense. When the old engine rotates, or a new engine comes into style, no one will play it anymore (unless it's item based, in which case TPCI messed up again).

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but since it's already being discussed i was hoping someone could post deck lists and explain what the purpose of Garbodor does? Seems fun, plus a cheaper deck for a new guy like me to play.

What Garbodor does is it's attack, Trashalanche, does 20 damage times the number of Item cards in your opponent's discard pile. It's usually combined with Drampa GX or Espeon GX to put pressure on the opponent before Items have found their way into the discard. This attack is so good because every deck right now runs 15+ Items and they burn through them fast. What's even crazier is it only costs one Psychic Energy. Here's a Drampa/Garb list I put together a while ago:

Pokemon (16):

3x Drampa-GX
1x Tapu Koko SM30 (Gyarados counter, does 20 spread for a DCE)
1x Oricorio GRI56 (Vespiquen counter, puts a damage counter on any of your opponent's Pokemon in any way you like for each Pokemon in your opponent's discard pile)
3x Tapu Lele GX (It's not really that cheap because it needs these)
3x Garbodor Trashalanche
1x Garbodor Garbotoxin
4x Trubbish

Trainers (34):

4x Professor Sycamore
4x N
2x Lysandre
1x Lillie
1x Delinquent
4x VS Seeker
4x Ultra Ball
2x Rescue Stretcher
1x Super Rod
2x Field Blower
2x Float Stone
3x Choice Band
4x Team Magma's Secret Base

Energy (10):

6x Basic Psychic Energy
4x Double Colorless Energy

Hope this answers your question :)

I won't be supplying a decklist, but I will link to where you can find some in about a week and expand upon what @GekkisaiDaiNi said.

Okay, so unless you absolutely cannot wait (in which case you just need to do some Googling to find it from an unofficial source), the official Pokémon website features an official Pokémon TCG subsection here. A week or two after a major tournament, like the recent Seattle Regional Championship where Garbodor (SM: Guardians Rising 51/145) decks were heavily used and very successful. Besides the Drampa-GX and Sylveon-GX variants, people are also trying to make it work with Trevenant (SM: Guardians Rising 7/145). Results are inconclusive, but if not the best option it seems at least competent AND means you only need to track down another "regular" rare (at least if the write up I am reading is correct).

Many, if not most, successful decks right now include Pokémon-EX or Pokémon-GX, Pokémon worth two Prizes when KO'd. These cards tend to have higher HP scores, which is why trading a Stage 1 Pokémon fueled by just [P] is quite the bargain. "Trashalanche" starts out on the weak side against a cautious opponent. Prior to the release of this Garbodor, standard operating procedure was to rip through as much of your deck as you could using the correct combinations of Items, Supporters, and Pokémon. Even playing conservatively, many decks will be dropping two or three Items per turn for the first few turns. Trashalanche quickly reaches 2HKO range on even the biggest Pokémon, and by late-game is swinging for OHKO's in many matchups. Note that Garbodor isn't too hard to OHKO right back for most competitive decks, at least before adding in more combos. 120 HP isn't bad right now, but competitive decks often want to swing for 130 damage per turn if they are shooting for 2HKOs.

There is also Garbodor (XY: BREAKpoint 51/122), which has an Ability called "Garbotoxin". This Ability prevents stops other Abilities from working, but only while this Garbodor has a Tool attached. The best Tool removal available happens to be an Item. The next best is an Ability (which Garbotoxin shuts down =P). Even if your own deck has Abilities you want to use, you can run three Garbodor (SM: Guardians Rising 51/145) with one Garbodor (XY: BREAKpoint 51/122), only using the Garboxotin version when your opponent has Abilities he or she needs. Most of these decks also include other forms of disruption, like Crushing Hammer. In the end, you're hitting them hard while they have to slow down, and maybe cannot use all of their own stuff. Of course, some decks just don't care. There are a few other similar attackers, and if they can't OHKO those big guys, they were built on 2HKOing them and OHKOing the other, smaller attackers.
