Pokemon General Question...

Hey there, I have a question about Pokemon in general, I consider myself an avid fan of the franchise as a whole but one thing has puzzled me as of recently...

Has there ever been a serious attempt, (in show or other wise) at describing how a Pokeball works? Meaning:

1.) How they shrink the Pokemon into the ball.
2.) Does the Pokemon go into an immediate sleep state when entering the ball?
3.) Why can Pokemon survive years in the ball without a trainer for food or medical needs. etc...

I've come to understand that the trainer has to do something to make the ball bigger before releasing the Pokemon, but that's about all I've gathered from the process...

I'm quite aware that when it comes down to it none of this is real, but Pokeballs are the key factor in almost all aspects of Pokemon and I want to understand how they work...

Good questions! I think I can answer the first one.
I remember a few months ago I was watching the 3rd movie with the audio commentary on. One of the guys said that pokemon are energy when inside the poke ball and are not in their true form untill they are out of it.
I don't know about the other 2 questions, though.

I KNEW IT!!!

anyways, I can answer one of the other two for him:

A2: No. explain Jessie's Wobbuffet and Misty's Psyduck.... not to mention that psyduck is shown inside of its pokeball at the end of the episode it's caught in...

That makes sense, what was the 3rd Movie, the Celebi one? I think I might have that DVD, I'll have to check out the commentary.

That's a good point, both Psyduck and Wobbuffet can come out of their ball at will. But that contradicts the "energy" theory that Meowth14 purposed. Hmmm...

the third movie was the entei one...

and I know MY post sounds confusing when comparing it to meowth's... but they're both true...

Actually in the Special manga, the answer for 1 is because of a special capture net developed only for pokemon so that they fit inside a pokeball.

These are great questions...If a Pokemon can come out of its ball at will, then how come Carnivine stayed in the ball so long (nail in the coffin). Alright, here is a scenario:
Shellos is happy with his family
"Pikachu, use Thunder!"
*Throws pokeball at hurt Shellos*
"Yeah! Now this Shellos can only":
a. Only be concious whenever I take it out of the ball
b. Be concious in a Pokeball most of its life
And now, the Shellos can not be with its family ever, ever again
And it has to get beat up a bunch before it can battle REALLY strong Pokemon and get beat up a lot more
Sucky life for a Pokemon...JUST LIKE ANIMALS IN A ZOO

I don't think the trainer HAS to enlarge the ball before releasing the Pokémon. They only make the ball smaller so it's easier to transport. (Wouldn't it be funny if Ash would walk around with those big balls on his belt?:D)

Urm.. if you meant what I thought you meant..
Anyway, it's true. The trainer must first shrink the ball for transportation. When they press the button, it enlarges.

In the DP Episode "Dawn Of A New Era", Ash tries to show Dawn how to catch a Buneary with a Pokeball, before her first attempted throw he says, "Hold on you got make your Pokeball bigger first", so I think the Trainer does have to enlarge the ball first. (It also says so on Wikipedia).

It says aswell in the same article that the inside of the Pokeball is mirrored to "create a holographic envrioment that suits the Pokemon". Which is terrible, pulling the poor things in and out of a false reality to make them fight. No wonder Pikachu doesn't like it.
