[PG] Riley- The Descendant

This is a project I had to make for school last year. Well, It used to. I am remaking it in a longer PG-13 Form. This does not have any progress (I will be updating weekly) so if something has to, feel free to take it down. However, I will repost it when I have progress. The story is based around Mesoamerican mythology, mainly Quetzalcoatl. I have a plot drawn out, so this will not fall apart like most stories I make. Chapters will be relatively short. Again, if I need to have progress to post, feel free to take this down, I will be putting up progress on Friday night. Thanks all, and feel free to discuss where you think I might be going with this. Sadly, I lost the short copy of it, so I can't post it unless I type it all up again. I may just do that tomorrow.

EDIT: Thanks Delta. May I post a thread once I have decent progress on it?
EDIT: Never Mind. Didn't Realize You'd PM'd me. xD Fail

RE: The Writing Café - General Discussion Thread

This is the plan for my next big story. The last idea was thrown out in exchange for adding Looker in the Aqua/Magma series. Here is the rough idea of my first Kalos story:

So it will begin with Lysandre giving a speech to his Team Flare. He will be talking of conquering the world and all that. However, Team Rocket infiltrates the building and captures Lysandre and his team of fashionable crooks. In exchange for part of the world to conquer, Lysandre must merge with Team Rocket and Giovanni to take over Kalos and, from there, branch off into the other regions. How will he do this? Simple: Mega Evolution.

Chris and Serena, the two protagonists, will start off on their regular journeys and all that, and Professor Sycamore will address the issue once they each are able to get to Lumiose City. They plan to use Mega Pokemon for good and stuff, although they will not use them on their teams and must be sure to keep it purely for study. However, they soon get caught up with the expanded Team Rocket and must fight for themselves. However, Giovanni learns that to control the world, he must harness the power of the Legendary Mega Starters: Mega Venusaur, Blastoise, and both of Charizard. To go along with this, and to keep the three in balance, he must also have Mega Mewtwo (both). Since he already has the Pokemon required, he just needs the Mega Evolution Stones. If he can get them, then he will have enough power to conquer the champions of every region. Hidden across the region are six stones--and it will be a race for them between two kids and a gang of evildoers. Once all the stones are found, Chris and Serena must fight Giovanni to get them all. However, if Giovanni manages to get all the stones....the world may cease to exist as we know it.

It's lengthy, I know, but it's just a thought. Is it too confusing? Too original? I need feedback before I go too far!

RE: The Writing Café - General Discussion Thread

Hmm, it's slightly confusing. For one example, are Chris and Serena on different sides, as in your previous fanfiction? Are they teaming up? Or are they going indie (independent), and then eventually meet up at some point? I know you said they eventually get caught up with Team Rocket, but is it caught up on or in?

...oh wait, I'm asking too many questions, and the answers could be spoilers. >.<

RE: The Writing Café - General Discussion Thread

Oh, by the way, I'll probably be doing this and the other one at the same time. That way I don't get bored because I can just switch off if I get tired of one of them, then come back later.

Well, they'll just be starting out their journey like most trainers. They won't be criminals like my Aqua/Magma story. I think I might make them start off in different towns, but then are connected by some event and decide to travel together. By then, Team Rocket will have...um...."collaborated" with Team Flare. Professor Sycamore will give Chris and Serena starter Pokemon and send them off for Mega Stones, as usual, but the difference is that they actually find the stones. Because they do so, they become a threat for Team Rocket's quest for conquer and all that.

It's still playing in my mind. Because of Mega Mewtwo, I wanted Giovanni in the mix, so I decided Team Rocket will take over Team Flare and Lysandre will become an admin or something. When I said that they'd be caught up with Team Rocket, I meant that they'd be against Team Rocket (both of them, I'm trying the heroes this go around). They're trying to get the mega stones before Team Rocket, so there will be thievery, violence, and other interesting topics that will test Chris and Serena to the fullest extent of their will to survive with Pokemon.

RE: The Writing Café - General Discussion Thread

I personally find it slightly original. I'm not saying I don't like the idea, but the entire concept needs to include unique elements that will not only keep the reader wanting to know more, but will take a slightly different road than the similar styles and elements that can be seen in the anime/games.

RE: The Writing Café - General Discussion Thread

I know what you mean. I'm still trying to work on the concept, especially with the mega stones (since that's the focus in the game, it's hard for it not to be similar to the game). It's also somewhat hard to do Kalos since it's the newest region to work with and there are still discoveries being made.

I'm trying to think of a way to where specific locations will be the main focus. For example, maybe since Kalos is in a star shape, I could use the five points of the star and the center, Lumiose, for the six total mega stones needed (venusaur, blastoise, charizard x and y, and mewtwo x and y). I'm also still trying to decide if that's the route I want to take in a story like this. I can verify that they will not be doing the gym challenge, though. They might battle trainers and stuff, but I am not going to have chapters dedicated to sections of the game.

What's even more perfect is that if I were to use the five points of the Kalos region, one of them is the location of Mewtwo and its stone. I could put the last one in Lumiose, where the final showdown would likely take place. That way, instead of just getting the gyms and beat the league, like the game, the main characters opt to choose mega stones as their primary focus. I know the concept isn't completely original, but, like I said, it's still a thought bubble that I'm fixing as I go along with the idea.

Edit: After looking at the map, the five points of Lumiose are: Ambrette Town (which has fossils and mining), Geosenge Town (which has stones galore), Laverre City's Poke Ball Factory (I'll figure something out), Couriway Town (which has Terminus cave near it), and the Pokemon Village (where there is a cave). So they all, minus the Poke Ball Factory (which I'll figure out), have something to do with stones and mining. In other words, each location is perfect for housing the Mega Stone. Lumiose City's landmark in the middle can be where the final one is hidden. So far, this seems to be working. I'll just have to make a backstory for it all. Once that's done, I can finally write this out.

RE: The Writing Café - General Discussion Thread

So, it's October 30th. This means it's the day before Halloween 2 days before NaNoWriNo, National Novel Writing Month. Is anyone here planning on participating? :D

I did a few years ago and I had a blast! There was a big group near where I lived in the US and we got together for writing sessions a few times. I ended up completing my novel barely on time, the most writing I've ever done is such a short period. It really was awesome. :D

November usually isn't a good month for me, so I haven't participated since then, but I'm hoping to this year, in spirit if not in letter. I don't have a novel project that's far enough along to start writing, but I do have 2 writing projects that I'm planning on working on here, both the continuation of the story I wrote for the Short Story Contest, and also the Tournament thing I'm writing up. Neither is a novel, but I am still aiming to hit 50k words between the two.

RE: The Writing Café - General Discussion Thread

I'm gonna participate! In fact, this will be my first novel to hit the market, and I cannot wait to start writing this thing! It's gonna be a Sci-Fi (It's kind of my favorite genre) novel called "Internexus"! I'll be sure to post a link to the Amazon page here so you guys can check it out.

RE: The Writing Café - General Discussion Thread

Oooh, sounds awesome! I hope it'll turn out excellently for you. :)

I ended up giving up on my first novel, lol. I finished the word count almost towards the end, so I finished the ending in December. I left it alone for a couple months, then printed it out and grabbed a red pen and a highlighter to start in on editing. After working at it on and off for the next few months, I was so disgusted that I threw it into a back drawer and never looked at it again. >_> However, that story ended up giving me the basis for a whole bunch of other stories that I've worked on in the same universe on and off, including an RPG that I ran, so I did get something out of it. :D And I do still have that printed copy floating around; maybe one of these days I'll pick it back up and try rewriting it.

Questions for Readers and Writers

You have either written or critiqued poems and stories that are created for your entertainment. Now, however, we want to hear from you! I will now be posting questions every now and then asking about what it is like to read and write. Don't refrain from leading off the topic as the answers progress.

Question 1
Where do you like to read and write? Do you mind distractions, such as TV and loud noises, or should the area be completely silent? In other words, what is comfortable for you?

RE: The Writing Café General Discussion Thread

Reading: I can read anywhere and anytime. I often read while cooking/eating (if I'm on my own) and while walking/traveling to places, but I can do it pretty much anywhere. I'd prefer no distractions, though I can tune them out easily if necessary (growing up with a younger sister and also several years of working in retails has basically given me max skill points in "tune something out") Favourite place would be a comfy chair curled up with a coffee, a snack, and a book.

Writing: I guess I'm a bit more picky when it comes to writing, but that does require more concentration overall. I like having music in the background, but it has to be instrumental, and I usually like making playlists that fit the tone of my writing. For example, for my current Mysteries tournament, I have a playlist of epic, action-based Homestuck music that I listen to in the background. I find that, as I write, I do eventually just tune it out, but it helps set the mood for my writing.

RE: The Writing Café General Discussion Thread

I find myself reading in all sorts of conditions on the rare occasions that I do. Sometimes when I don't have anything to do or don't have the means to do it like in a free period at college in the noisy library or listening to music quietly in the background. That's pretty much how I read the whole of World War Z. Those are books though. If I'm reading comics or manga then I can just about read those anywhere even when talking to friends though I do prefer to read them alone of course.

RE: The Writing Café General Discussion Thread

I like to read... Well, I like to read in any place -- loud or otherwise -- except for during things that require my attention, such as alien invasions, et cetera. In fact, I can read in the hush of the night and the cacophony of a dog show, with dogs barking left and right, blow-driers howling and people going about their business.

RE: The Writing Café General Discussion Thread

For me, the surrounding area must be completely silent in order for some reading to be done. If there is even a whisper, I shut the book and leave. In my writing, though, I just like to be private. I can have the TV on (which doesn't matter anymore because mine doesn't work) or listen to the screams of my sister a couple yards away. As long as I can focus on my writing and not on whatever else, then I don't mind it. I've typed up a chapter during an auction before. The man was loud, but not loud enough to penetrate my thought process.

RE: The Writing Café General Discussion Thread

When it comes to reading, like Turtwig, all must be silent, and I prefer to be in a confined area with no distractions (I am easily distracted). Writing is a different story. I am best when I am off my antidepressants, as I can explore my melancholic emotions. Usually, that is in my seventh period...

RE: The Writing Café General Discussion Thread

I normally write in relatively silent places because, as stated before, focus matters. I can work with one person talking or a few people in the room, but not too much volume. As far as reading goes, anything works - I can generally tune out whatever makes noise. The one thing that distracts me from either one is the internet, sadly. >.>

The internet is the biggest distraction for me as well. I start reading a book and then check for any new posts and then decide to go on social media and then go back to the forums and then find a wifi battling video to watch and then go back to the forums and then....(remembers to breathe).

Hopefully some other people will respond; it is the week of a holiday, though.

Zero distractions. If I am distracted, I will have to get up from me sitting down and go take care of it, then sit back down again to start reading. I used to listen to books-on-tape, but unless the narrator has a solid and interesting voice, I won't be able to remember what they say for more than 5 seconds, and even after that, I'd only remember things within the past day or so...and driving is a gigantic distraction. The same thing applies to reading.
Sometimes I will have a piece of music playing in the background, usually from Youtube and whatever I feel in the mood for at that moment - but sometimes music destroys my train of thought...again, all based on mood.

Note: this is coming from when I used to read and write my own stories. Outside of proofreading already-finished works, I don't do much anymore.

RE: The Writing Café General Discussion Thread

I can usually read in any situation, I have gotten used to ignoring people/noises. This is especially easy if the book is really good. I do, however, have to be sitting or slouching in a very comfortable position, because other wise I can't focus. And as Turtwig and AoH mentioned, the internet is a good distraction as well. So many things to do on it haha.

RE: The Writing Café General Discussion Thread

After falling behind last week due to a combination of sickness and pain making it difficult for me to concentrate, I finally, today, managed to not only catch up, but complete my NaNoWriMo goal by writing a total 50,087 words as of about 5 minutes ago. Over 35k (and 76 MS Word pages) of that is for my tournament story; the other ~14k words are in Crimson Road.

Not really a novel, I know, but I consider it a success nonetheless. :p Also, even though it's not even halfway completed, Mysteries is by far the longest fanfiction I've ever written. The only one that even came close I think topped out at around 25k words.
