I know this isn't really going to be a very hot thread but I figured I might as well try because I have wanted to talk about Diamond/Pearl/Platinum for ages but many people at my league (most are kids) don't have any idea what it even is considering they got in in gen 5/6. This is a thread where you can discuss or ask questions about Diamond, Pearl or Platinum.

As a starting discussion, did anyone here like or dislike this generation? If so, why?

I really liked Generation 4, I suppose partially because it is most nostalgic for me. I first learnt about Pokemon during the late DPPt era. I remember seeing this pink (Pearl) and blue (Diamond) games at the shop, buying a fake box of Stormfront TCG cards at our local fair and watching the DPPt anime. A lot of my most favourite Pokemon came from DPPt too. Ironically, I have never played a DPPt game, although I have played HGSS.

My favorite Pokemon is Klinklang (My reasoning for Deoxys is well come on, TCG Klinklang just doesn't sound right(wait now it does I should change my name)). I have practically mastered Diamond and Platinum, having 8 play throughs on my diamond copy and 3 on Platinum.

I really like Gen 4. Though Diamond was my first Pokemon game so I'll admit that is partially why I like it. A lot of my cousins are Pokemon fans and one of them started liking Pokemon around the same time as me. He got Battle Revolution eventually and we started playing against each other on that. We saw each other often so I was kinda immersed in it for a few years. Growing up with it isn't the only reason though, I remember loving and doing Pokemon Contests a lot. I was obsessed with dressing up Pachirisus, Bidoofs and my Torterra and then seeing them in the lobby (which is ironic considering how I am irl :p). Then Platinum came out. Even though I live farther south than most Canadians, we still got a lot of snow, so seeing snow in game reminded me of it which I found pretty interesting (some of you may find that strange but being a little kid in a place that can get really cold and where you can get a foot of snow during the winter kinda forces you to love it). Years after that I read the DP and DPPt Adventures manga, and those ended up being some of my favourites in the series.

I think 4th generation is the most underrated Pokemon Generation.
Like all Pokemon Generations it has its faults and flaws, but it also has its benefits and advantages. It added new features that are looked upon favourably, namely the online component that has become such a big part of the Pokemon community, it brought back the day and night cycles, battle animations, smoothed out the gameplay and competitive team building, added a new region that actually had different biomes. These features and the others that were added, no one should really be able to complain about. They seriously updated to more inline with modern Pokemon as each generation does.

However, the faults are strong in many ways, the biggest one was the player drop off. I don't have numbers, but the people I talk to say they stopped playing Pokemon in the 3rd generation, the hardware shift wasn't something they stuck with. They also say it has some really weak Pokemon designs, weaker than the previous 3 generations, that for some reason garnered more attention than other "poor" designs from previous installments. Players couldn't keep up with the map, and the story was lacking in some areas, particularly your rival who was definitely the weakest up until this point in Pokemon. People never talk about it, but from a purely visual standpoint, the game also fell apart due to its reduction in framerate which despite what some people may say, is indeed jarring at least for me.

Despite these downsides, I think 4th Generation was a strong one that lacks the nostalgia feel that props 3rd generation above it for many players. It is (now) my third favourite generation, and has remakes for what is without a doubt the best generation of Pokemon games. It is the one I spent the most time on until 6th generation, and it was the one that got me into competitive battling for a short while, not to mention it has my best shiny story.

I would like them to remake Diamond and Pearl next, but Kanto needs it first, so who knows what will happen, either way I think it is a much better generation of games than people give it credit for.

I'm gonna disagree with everyone here. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl were in my opinion the weakest entries in the series. I thought the games were slow, the music was dull, too many HMs, besides a lot of evolutions of past Pokémon, most of the new Pokémon in that generation had absolutely abysmal designs in my opinion, the characters were for the most part unmemorable or annoying.

Honestly, the only generation I can say I don't enjoy. Platinum was a step up, with challenges like the Distortion World, the Battle Frontier, legendaries, but it wasn't enough to make me like the Pokémon more, the region more, or the characters more. The 4th Generation was never my favorite, and ever since I first got Pokémon Pearl back in 2007, I never really liked the games.

As a kid, I always went back to Emerald as a kid. But it's not just nostalgia:

-When HGSS came out, I loved those games. I thought they were great, and I thought there was so much to do.

-BW were good, and had an excellent story. B2W2 were phenomenal and had an excellent story. Of course, I wasn't able to appreciate the story fully at that time in my life, but as I got older I appreciate it more and more.

-X and Y were okay, but they had the awesome Pokémon and beautiful region to make up for the lack of any interesting characters or good story.

-ORAS was good, but not great. All I can say about those.

-Then Sun and Moon are by far the best Pokémon games ever. Absolutely phenomenal.

If I had to guess nostalgias never been a big factor for me. I just don't like the 4th generation. I argue my points with friends at school often, who think Generation 4 is the best. Of course, that's their opinion, and there's nothing wrong with that, I just don't see what's good about the games. Never once in my life did I ever find these games very fun. Then again, I don't have any nostalgia geared towards these games. Ever since ORAS was announced, I've been waiting for a DP remake. It frustrates me that there is a generation of Pokémon I don't enjoy. I want to enjoy it, and I think a refreshed version of these games, with maybe some Sinnoh forms (yes, Alolan forms for Sinnoh) and a more difficult storyline then I'd be very happy to see those released.

In my case, Gen. IV was just ok.

I only bought the game after a while and only bcause I was interested in buying Castlevania: PoR and DS Lite. This happened when I was entering college, so the series had become somewhat repetitive.

Right now, I have some nostalgia because it was the last Japan-based games but even when thinking about going back with different Pokémon and create a fictional backstory, it doesn't appeal that much. D/P brought the day/night cycle but that isn't a merit; I think it's more one of the ridiculous downsides of Gen III.
Not being able to ride bicycles in checkpoints was ridiculous, Oreburgh Mine felt abandoned, Eterna City and the other historic town didn't match the amoun of lore from Ecruteak and Violet, Barry was simply hedious, Rowan was ok as a professor, I couldn't like the overall feel of the eastern cities. I hate the lake trio and the lack of lore pertaining Arceus, there are too few Pokémon, namely Water , Bidoof shouln't exist and Starly's line is ugly, the Dex is akward, namely the ton of Legendary yet again with no lore.

Regarding a remake...I couldn't go into any older game updated with Sum/Moon scale.

Sinnoh was pretty forgettable all around. Some of the designs were good but that's about it.

Platinum should have been the base game.

Diamond and Pearl are weak games but the other three games make it worth it.

Platinum and especially HGSS are phenomenal games. They rank as my favorite games in the series.

Well, props to you for having the bravery to step above everyone elses opinion and standout! I admire that. That aside, I agree with Diamond and Pearl being weakish games, but Platinum made improvements. I think the biggest fault with D/P was the fact that the only fire type besides the starter was awful, so I was always forced to choose Chimchar because I hate Ponyta. One thing I find cool in Platinum is you can get two Regigigas. I have never deleted my save file in Platinum because it has the Toys R Us Regigigas which you use to get the three Regi's and you can use those to get a second Regigigas, which I thought was pretty nifty. I fully agree on your opinion on B/W, that's my second favorite generation. So much to do.

Generation 4 was when I became truly competitive. I had always known about EVs and IVs, but hadn't really played against other people online. I got in the top 5 for Ubers on the ladder and hardly ever lost except when I got haxxed. I also won several tournaments of various special rules in generation 4. This time was also when #TeamDimensional was in full swing and had lots of activity.

IMO, the best of all time, and in fact I would call Platinum a perfect game (or at the very least, near perfect). DPPt are the most well rounded Pokemon games of all time with a large, open ended region, a wealth of content and extra features, a good storyline (albeit not as great as BW1 and SM, but for their time the storyline was good), and in Platinum, a diverse regional dex. The game does have a few flaws, the game is a tad slow, but they pale in comparison to those of other generations. 4th gen was definitely the high point of the series.

I kind of like that the game takes longer. I dislike that XY, ORAS, and SM are so easy most of the time. Everyone is saying "XY was the greatest!", well sure XY had gorgeous graphics, but in my opinion, the plot was horrendous, and rushed. ORAS was pretty good, considering my first Pokemon games were Diamond and Sapphire. Pokemon SM is good, with a new style of play, and the graphics are AMAZING and the plot is well done.

I am 15, and the first pokemon game I played was my brothers gold version. I have not played any games past black and white 1. Gen 4 was the middle games for me. They seemed special, but never really stuck in my mind. I loved the underground exploration part of the game that I used to grind stones. as I was still in elementary school I did not care about the story. The lack of fire types never really phased me as I always took the fire starter, heck I probably liked the overabundance of ice types. I adored the gen 2 remakes based on nostalgia. I loved the fact that Whitney was still a hard leader. I like the semi-competitive rivals like in the remake. The fact that 2 regions were in the game was great. But what does a nostalgic "fanboys" opinion matter.
