Looking to run Gengar EX for cities. Please let me know of any tweaks. Should I keep Dragalge? Is there a better stadium than Dimension Valley? Thanks.

Pokémon: 15

  • 3 Gengar EX (PHF)
  • 2 Trevenant (XY
  • 3 Phamtump (XY)
  • 3 Wobbuffet (PHF)
  • 2 Skrelp (FLF)
  • 2 Dragalge (FLF)
Trainers/Supporters/Stadiums: 32
  • 4 Professor Sycamore
  • 4 Professor Birch's Observation
  • 2 Lysandre
  • 2 Level Ball
  • 3 Ultra Ball
  • 4 VS Seeker
  • 2 Float Stone
  • 1 Trainers' Mail
  • 3 Muscle Band
  • 4 Dimension Valley
  • 2 Wally
  • 1 Judge
Energy: 13
  • 9 Psychic Energy
  • 4 Mystery Energy
Strategy:

Standard Gengar EX strategy. Use Trevenant for item lock. Wobbuffet for ability lock. Dragalge to prevent opponent retreat. Robosubs to protect Gengar EX.

+3 wally (turn 1 trainer lock, or toad 1 trainer lock you out of getting trevenant out)

I always forget about Wally. Thanks for reminding me. What about stadiums? Should I stick with Dimension Valley or go Faded Town? Or a combination?

If I drop the Dragalge line what should I add?

+1 1-1 Trevenant
+1 Wobbuffet
+1 Hoopa EX

Or should I add more trainers?

First of all, you've listed 33 Trainers, not 37.

In running my version of this deck, I did not find Robo Subs to really be that critical/helpful and if you happened to be Item-locked by an opponent, these become "dead" cards.

A turn 1 Wobbuffet can be really disrupt your opponent.

No Level Balls (to help get your basic out fast)?

Following are some suggested deck changes:

-1 Gengar EX - 3 are sufficient, IMO
-4 Robo Sub
-2 Trainer's Mail - 1 is sufficient, IMO
-1 Wally - 2 is sufficient, IMO

+1 Wobbuffet - to enhance your chances of a turn 1 Ability lock
+1 Phantump - to enhance your chances of a turn 1 Item-lock
+2 Level Ball
+2 Professor Sycamore - more card draw support
+1 Judge - more card draw support and opponent's hand disruption
+1 VS Seeker - max count to help enable your Trainer reuse capability

I hope you find these comments helpful.

I suggest trying 4 wobbuffet. Turn 1 no shaymin is so good.

Also with 4 dimention valley. You don't need dce at all. I played this deck quite a bit with no problems.

4 Mystery Energy is great to retreat out of the pokemon you shove in the front.

I also suggest trying lucky helmet. Throwing it on a pokemon that is just going to take a hit is great.

Great advice. Corrected the list above.

Removed the DCE and added 2 more mystery and 2 more psychic. If I see that it is too much energy, I will sub in some lucky helmets.

Thanks,

I found that
6 Psychic
4 Mystery
Is enough. If anything put in escape rope/switch

I don't completely agree with only 1 trainer's mail. You aren't guaranteed anything so to make this more of a speed deck run 2-3. Speed is great when it comes to TCG.

-1 judge (not a big fan of getting only four cards. It is a hand disrupter, but I think it hurts yourself just as much. about as bad as a tail on birch)

+1 Trainer's Mail.

Also:

-2 Birch

+2 Shauna (almost gaurenteed something you need from my experience. About as reliable as Sycamore.)

If there is something here you don't agree with feel free to quote. :)

I actually found Robo subs good against 1 prize attackers. Like bees. I only have 3 Robo subs though

I made a Gengar EX deck for my son to play in tournaments last year with almost the same list as the OP (less a few cards that weren't released yet) and found it to be quite inconsistent and clunky. He has now moved on to a different deck and my youngest son is now playing the Gengar deck, but I have changed it to use 4 Wobbuffet and 3 Gengar EX for pokemon, but use an energy disruption engine with Dimension Valley and Robo Subs. So far when playing PTCGO, I would say I am about 80-85% successful with it. I really like the energy disruption, it is quite consistent, although I have had some games where I draw dead and can't seem to get things working. I have found use for the Robo Subs, however I really prefer having Wobbuffet in the active spot for majority of the game, or until I see enough of the opponent's deck to know if it is or isn't heavily ability based. One thing that I have put into the deck since the release of Breakthrough, is I have taken out 2 trainer's mail and put in 2 Skyla. TM is strictly based on luck of the draw to get a trainer you need, where as Skyla allows you to get that specific trainer you need, when you need it, but at the cost of using you Supporter for the turn. A fair trade off IMO.

Gengar EX is really fun, probably my favorite deck so far. My boys (5 1/2 and 7 1/2 years old) are playing in a City Championship tournament tomorrow here in Canada. We will see how they do!

Cool! My city championship is soon, I am using a plasma. As for the deck, I only reccomend one trainers mail. I find that it is an ok card, but you don't need 3-4. 1 is fine.
