Pokemon Gym Leaders Based on Things Other Than Typing

What about a GL who specializes in vertebrates? Or maybe even an E4 team who have specific Pokémon they like.
I like the second idea more, I think it would be better if the gym leaders specifically said: 'I like this type because...' because it would teach kids, the main audience, to use pokémon that you like, not just ones everyone else is using which are good. I think the series needs to focus on explaining that every pokémon is special/useful in some way.

I think there is a "favorite Pokemon" factor already. Gym Leaders / E4 have a "signature Pokemon" that somewhat represent them. Whitney has Miltank, Lance has Dragonite, Bruno has Machamp, etc. etc. I recognize that these are type-dependent favorites, but this idea promotes that the trainers have personality in their Pokemon selections.

On another forum I belong too, we made our own Pokémon League and I got to be a member of the Elite 4. Rather than using a single type, I decided to make a team of Eeveelutions, since I liked them and they fit a "signature Pokémon" theme, even if they were all different types. :D The idea of using a team of Eeveelutions is not super unique, I know, but a lot of people like that it provided a more varying team to combat against.

Well, I think Whitney would use all pink Pokémon in her team.
Miltank
Clefable
Wigglytuff
Sylveon

That way she can still use the Clefairy line.

Maybe instead of Gym Leaders doing this, some other kind of 'event' battle? Or maybe if you encounter them away from the Gym?

Oh, and Janine should totally have a Greninja. So should Koga.

But Janine's team is of Moths and Ninjask. I didn't want to make it all Ninjer-y and I wanted the team to go around their sig Pokémon.

My gym I use my signature team. All champs and a little lazy sometimes.

"Rawr,"

"Sorry Flame, did I hurt your feelings?" gives Flame a lava cookie.

"Noms,"

"Good boy,"

Anyway where was I going with this. All though it makes no sense to have an all grass type gym. I think a lot of gym leaders use the pokemon they really love and like. Everyone is attracted to some kind of Pokemon. I majorly choose Psychic. I guess it's because of my energy I feel really connected to them.

"Did I hurt your feelings again?" *pets* "Sorry"

There are a few exceptions. *Typholsion nods* I have a Gengar named Spookie and Flame in my team. I feel connected to Pokemon because of my psychic energy. But...I don't think we should just change gym leaders favorite Pokemon just because it's a little illogical. I think what we need to change is the strategies involved in the usage of the types. I have a friend who has this Gourgeist, it's a ghost grass. Thing can take a hit from Flame. Instead of choosing Pokemon that have a major weakness. Pokemon should be chosen based on the toughness they can take to their weakness to make it harder.

Yeah, but this is for GLs who can't use their faviourite Pokémon anymore, because of type changes (Clefairy), or that they like a certain kind of Pokémon, which all tend to be different types (Dogs). I like Bird Pokémon, but that doesn't mean I'd only pick flying types, as there's flightless birds, like Blaziken.

See I don't think Gym leaders should change their signature Pokemon, just because of a type change. Personally I think the future lies in dual typing.

I still think it's dumb having to base all of the Pokémon on your team as a certain type, because of your faviourite Pokémon.
You fav Pokémon could be Beedrill, so that means you're stuck with Bug types.
