Biweekly (i.e. Every Two Weeks) Haiku Contest

Rules and Entry Requirements:

1.) Post here saying that you want to enter and you’ll be accepted. Please note that the limit for entries is twelve per contest and signup ends once that tally has been met or the deadline for signups and submissions has passed.

2.) Participation requires simply that all entrants write a three-line short poem in haiku format (the alternating "Five-Seven-Five Syllables" per line set up) to be voted upon once all entries have been submitted (which will be copy-and-pasted into this post when I have the time to do so). All submissions are final, but the only restrictions are that participants have until the second Wednesday after this post has been made to submit their poems here. The fan fiction moderator may scrutinize the quality of poems and completely unintelligible submissions might automatically disqualified; however, you will not be penalized for occasional small errors.

3.) All writings much have bear some hinting to the select theme for each contest, just to keep things somewhat even. The theme for this contest will be Nature and Wildlife. Poems will be judged by other members of PokéBeach after the submission deadline has passed by means of an open poll people can select their three favorite poems from. The poll will remain open to everyone for three days following the submission deadline. Once it has been closed, the winner (or winners) will be determined by who gets the most votes, and the runner ups will be determined accordingly as well.

The world turns, never ending
Our lives, prospering

The sun heats the earth
The wind blows to keep it cool
Creating balance

Its short, its fat, it looks dumb
But mom, its so cute.

RE: Biweekly Short Poem Contest

3 to 8 lines? Sweet, I can make it up on the spot.

Sure, I'm in.
...I AM known for my poetry in these parts...
(But yeah, It's gonna stink haha)

@MrGatr: OMG READ.

RE: Biweekly Short Poem Contest

@Safariblade, Ya, I did, I was just confused, about it, and I highly doubt that, your known for pranks everywhere, and jokes in most parts.

RE: Biweekly Short Poem Contest

Anything is allowed, so long as it doesn't violate general forum rules or WC rules regarding content (i.e. nothing adult or over PG-13). The three to eight lines idea covers anything from haiku to short free-verse/form poems. Also, I changed the deadline earlier from what I originally had to better encompass two weeks, so it's next Wednesday for sure rather than this coming Sunday like it would've been. I may change it next time depending how this goes.

RE: Biweekly Short Poem Contest

*Bump*

I'm debated whether or not I should just make these into Haiku contests, since it seemed like a lot of people wanted to just do those instead during the last contest. I'm not changing things yet since this is just a trial run, but I may if I decide to continue doing these after this (given nobody else has signed up yet...this contest goes on anyways, even if it's just two people entered by the time the deadline comes).

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

Done, then. It should be simple enough since I already set the theme as Nature and Wildlife, which is basically what haikus are supposed to be about anyways (if memory serves, anything else they're about makes them count as "Senryu" or something like that instead). Hopefully this will draw at least a couple more people in.

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

Pop!

I know this Haiku
a hard thing, it's really not
entry I would like

I would like to enter something. Count me in.
...
(Ummm, how do contractions count?) *sweatdrop* I may be over if that one counts...

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

Contractions count as regular words do depending on how syllables comprise them. For instance, "don't" has one syllable, while "doesn't" has two. They're still considered single words with their own syllables, you see; but they're also treated as shortened combinations of two (or more) others to still mean the same thing as they would individually. If you plan them right, you can give yourself more or less words to work with depending on what you're writing about (in this case, it should be something in nature or about wildlife, otherwise it won't count since that's the main challenge of this contest anyways...and don't worry; that one you just made was your post sayong you wanted to enter and thus won't count against you right now).

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

That was my entrance haiku, not an entry.

What I meant to say with it was that I want to enter...

BTW, as a possible concern, how are you making sure that someone(EDIT: a participant) doesn't go off and copy something(EDIT:a professional or something) that someone else wrote? (EDIT: I meant plagiarism, what I wrote sounded like I was worried about someone copying my own work...)

No matter, I write my own.

-edit-
Oh?
You are taking submissions right now?

Sweet.
Here ya go.

Haiku 1

Grass grows, seasons change
The world turns, never ending
Our lives, prospering

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

With fanfics I normally just google the author's username and the title of the fic to see if they have it posted on other sites or if someone else might have posted it. Similarly I could just run poems through google or something just to verify that they weren't copied word for word. Most times, though, plagiarisms not a major issue here since people seem to do their own works honestly...that's just from my time here, though...

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

I would like to enter.

A Haiku for Summer

The sun heats the earth
The wind blows to keep it cool
Creating balance

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

Sure thing. I'll be updating the participants list later, since I'm on via phone right now. Also, I'm going to add a Haiku entries list too since we're getting things right away now; I may allow for more than twelve people to join too if interest increases to that much.

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

I'll join. Quite ironically, though, something in the wording has confused me.

What do you mean by a three short poem? It makes no sense.

Regardless, I will enter this:

A Haiku Of Hope
Through the winter winds,
The isolated plant thrives,
Blooming beautifully.

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

Sorry, I meant a three-line short poem when I wrote that (curse the fact that I occasionally miss words while writing). I'll fix it shortly. Thanks for pointing it out.

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

No problem. It's the one place that I can point out typos without mini-modding. :D
Please could you add me to the contestant list, too?

RE: Biweekly Haiku Contest

I believe that I do far better with little humorous non-natural haikus: (This is a rather popular style in the computer science area that I am currently studying in)

Not an entry, just posted for your enjoyment:

A Haiku of Blue Screen of Death

A Screen of Blue Hate
The system hangs: laughing, dead
I scream my rage: lost
