Biweekly Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X

Rules and Entry Information

1.) Post here saying that you want to enter and you’ll be accepted. The cap for entries is slated at twenty contestants per round, and signups will end as soon as that number has been met, the deadline for entries has passed, or the thread sits for several days without any new entries (during which private submissions may be accepted via PM to me).

2.) Participation simply requires entrants to write a haiku (a poem with the alternating “Five-Seven-Five Syllables” per line format) or a similar length short poem and post it here as an entry, though submitting them via PM or Profile Message to me is fine too. All poems are due by Thursday, December 29, 2011, and voting begins once the deadline has passed or all entries are made. Submissions are final, but if I feel that a poem should be revised slightly, I will do it with the writer’s consent.

3.) Each poem for the contest must follow the selected theme for the competition. Due to artist’s having different interpretations of ideas, no haiku will be disqualified for writing about divergent topics so long as the theme is tied in somehow (if it isn’t, then you will be disqualified for the duration of this round). This contest’s theme is Christmastime or Winter Holidays.

4.) Voting will run for three days and be open to all members of PokéBeach. Everyone will be allowed to vote for up to three of their favorites. All participants are required to vote for at least one entry; however, you are not allowed to vote for your own (if I catch you doing so, you’ll be docked a point).

Haiku List (in order authors entered)

1.) Christmas

None I had, but our love said,
Best Christmas ever.

2.) Christmas Tree
A verdant rocket,
Its bright spheres cascading down,
Shoots up to the stars.

3.) Holidays
Family, love, and presents
are all part of the holidays.
I look outside and see a world filled with lights.

4.) -A NOTE FOR SANTA-
Dear Santa, thank you-
for all that darn coal last year.
GO DIE! warm regards-

5.) No Joy in the Holidays
Christmas is the time
where joy is supposed to reign
but why don't I feel it?

6.) White Christmas
'Round the window,
I see Rudolph's red glow in the starry sky;
now the Christmas magic begins at midnight!

7.) In The Manger
In a small manger,
A baby sits there cutely,
Unaware of himself.

8.) Gratefulness
My thanks be to God,
for good friends and loving family,
with whom I share this holy day.

9.) The Star
From the eastern land
Wise men come seeking the One
Born King of the Jews

10.) Joys of Winter
It is a cold day;
yet heat eminates from me;
my heart is the source.

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signs and Submissions accepted now!)

Wow, how was this not noticed?

Well, I'll try to get something in. Not sure what to write yet, but sign me up for now.

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signs and Submissions accepted now!)

I keep these hid until they're needed, that's how... I thought that would've been obvious.

In any case, the OP's been updated. I'm not sure if I'm going to enter yet, since I just didn't have any spur of the moment inspirations when I made the thread like the past several contests.

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signs and Submissions accepted now!)

I'm in.

I will have my entry in later.

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signs and Submissions accepted now!)

In

Lets do this :p

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signs and Submissions accepted now!)

-A NOTE FOR SANTA-

Dear Santa, thank you-
for all that darn coal last year.
GO DIE! warm regards-

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signs and Submissions accepted now!)

I shall enter:

No joy in the Holidays

Christmas is the time
where joy is suposed to reign
but why don't I feel it?

I refuse to breathe,
from machines and tubes again-
now please, pull the plug.

I added you to the signup list, but you'll have to enter something else. As much as I like this poem, it has nothing to do with the theme.

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signups and Submissions accepted now!)

I'm entering. I have my short poem:

White Chirstmas
'Round the window,
I see Rudolph's red glow in the starry skies;
now the Chirstmas magic begins at midnight!

( I hope it's good, since I'm not very skilled in short poems, but instead long poems. If you allow long poems; don't count the above poem, I will work on it later! ;) )

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signups and Submissions accepted now!)

So long as you don't go over four lines, I still count things as short poems.

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signups and Submissions accepted now!)

What do you mean by 'four lines'? Do you mean that the poem has to be less than four paragraphs to qualify? Or that there needs to be about three sentences?

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signups and Submissions accepted now!)

I'll be in this. I'll enter my Haiku soon.

In poetry, a "line" typically refers to the actual row that a sentence or part of a sentence is written on. I'm not sure how else to really explain it, since poetry usually deals more in visual formatting than anything else.

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signups and Submissions accepted now!)

Okay, I'll enter my 'White Christmas' poem. *joined* ;)

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signups and Submissions accepted now!)

I updated the OP for certain then.

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signups and Submissions accepted now!)

Christmas
Presents, grand dinners,
None I had, but our love said,
Best Christmas ever.

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signups and Submissions accepted now!)

And updated! I even finally found inspiration for an entry of my own. It's not a haiku specifically, but still a short-poem. Hopefully it doesn't come across too religious...

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signups and Submissions accepted now!)

I'd like to ask... Why was the "!" at the end of the last line replaced with a "."?

Excuse me if I was rude.

RE: Haiku & Short-Poem Contest X (Signups and Submissions accepted now!)

I'll enter now:

In the Manger

In a small manger,
A baby sits there cutely,
Unaware of himself.

Yeah, the last line has 6 syllables, but I don't think it is violating the rules, is it?
