So I've been away from the game for quite some time but my girlfriend is getting me back into it. Last time I played I was playing Empoleon/Dusknoir in Standard so a lot of my cards are in the Expanded format now. I haven't kept up with the evolution of Expanded so was looking for some help tweaking this kind of for fun deck to be a tad bit more format proper.

Pokemon: 18
  • 4 Vulpix DRX 18
  • 4 Ninetales DRX 19
  • 4 Salandit GRI 15
  • 4 Salazzle GRI 16
  • 2 Oricorio GRI 14
Trainers: 35
  • 4 Devolution Spray DRX 113
  • 3 Level Ball AOR 76
  • 2 Ultra Ball ROS 93
  • 4 Hypnotoxic Laser PLS 123
  • 1 Super Rod BKT 149
  • 4 VS Seeker ROS 110
  • 3 Choice Band GRI 121
  • 2 Virbank City Gym PLS 126
  • 2 Trainers' Mail ROS 92
  • 1 Computer Search BCR 13
  • 1 Startling Megaphone FLF 97
  • 3 Professor Sycamore BKP 107
  • 2 N DEX 96
  • 1 AZ PHF 117
  • 1 Colress PLS 118
  • 1 Blacksmith FLF 88
Energy: 7
Fire Energy

The strategy here is pretty simple and relies on 2 key cards Ninetales and Salazzle.

Hot Poison plus Hexed flame is a great combination made better with the change to burn that has happened since I returned. Burn+Poison lets Hexed Flame hit for 120, with a choice band that's 120+30 so 150, then you add 10 from poison(without Virbank) and 20 from burn and we hit that magic 180 to knock out most EX and basic GX for 1 energy with a 1 prize attacker.

The rest of the deck is supporting that. Using devoltion sprays to reuse both Hot Poison and Bright look, hypnotoxic laser to get status conditions when we don't have Salazzle and sometimes to hit that 3 conditions for when you absolutely need to 1HKO something bigger than 180, and Virbank so so added damage as well.

Oricorio is in as the preferred starter, The other Pokemon Don't attack well in the first turn but Oricorio is searchable with level ball and is fantastic for setup grabbing us a ton of the basics we need for the rest of the game.

I feel like the idea is there and in testing the deck has be a ton of fun, consistently catchering and 1HKOing EX's trying to setup on the bench. The problem I have is probably with the numbers, How many of this card do I need, can I run less of that, are these the right 1 ofs, etc.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Currently 17-3 in random expanded matches online. Punted one game so could have potentially been 18-2. Deck is preforming great, still looking for constructive criticisms for how to improve it.

I really like the list. It is like an improved version of the Amoonguss variant because it does more damage consistent damage with Salazzle. Granted, it doesn't add the confusion to force a retreat / switch, but that's kind of the price you pay for the damage IMO.

That said, how many Wobb / Item lock decks have you run into in those 20 games? I would think this would have a fairly difficult match up against something like Accelgor / Wobbuffet or several Toad variants (particularly Toad Garb). I kind of think this could struggle against something like Vespiquen / Flareon as well because those decks would trade pretty well with this. I also think this could potentially struggle against Deciplume or Toad / Owls (maybe especially Toad / Owls).

Along those lines, you might look at adding 1 Lysandre into the list. I get that Ninetales performs this switch action in most of your games, but there are going to be games where that ability is turned off or you get hexed or you can't devolve it to slap down on another basic. Those kinds of things.

The other thing I was thinking was that you might incorporate Olympia in there somewhere as well just to get you out of status conditions that get placed on your pokemon. It would also potentially help in the mirror match (should you ever face it).

So I ran into 2 item lock decks and you are completely correct that it's a bad matchup haha. Picked up a win against toad/owls but I have a feeling that was due to some awful draws on their part. Lost to Toad Garb, it wasn't really close. I originally played 1 lysandre and did drop it because I felt Ninetales was enough but I think you're right, and I like the Olympia addition. My problem right now is figuring out the cuts. Like I feel like I need to run all 4's on the pokemon for consistency but maybe I can cut somewhere? same with the devo sprays and and such. I've already cut some lasers for other like utility supporters and a 3rd Oricorio which I think 3 is right. I also am gonna need to make room for probably 2 Salazzle Gx when they are released as just a great alternate attacker/finisher. I'll cut 1 regular Salazzle at that point probably.

I actually almost dropped a game to some kind of raticate break deck because it was ammune to special conditions and turns out damage output against non EX's that you can't status is just poor haha.

With the list you have, I think maybe you could dump Blacksmith and one of the Choice Bands.

There are always going to be decks that are like that though. Virizion EX decks. Metal decks using the Steel Shelter stadium. There really is no way to avoid them all. But I think the list looks like it should play against a wide range of decks and that is really what matters in expanded. The more decks you can beat, the better. That's why I don't think you should make any crazy changes. It has shown that it plays against a lot of decks in early testing. The main point is getting those mons down and starting the pain train via negative status conditions as early and as often as possible. The deck is built to do exactly that. Making aggressive changes would just take away from that ability.

You could drop a salazzle, since you only really need is one or 2 on bench since yoh are running sprays. Maybe add teammates and timer balls and Brigitte. If you can get a turn 1 Brigitte, all you need is a timer ball to get the ball rolling

I would quite definitely drop 1 or 2 salazzle lines. Brigette is good, more balls maybe another AZ, perhaps the new seviper from BS, maybe instead of a salazzle line, an amoongus
