Card of the Day: Ho-Oh EX
51.jpg

Ho-Oh-EX – Fire – HP160
Basic Pokemon

Ability: Phoenix
This ability can be used 1 time during your turn if this card is in your discard pile. Flip 1 coin. If heads, attach 3 different Basic Energy cards to this card and play it onto your Bench.

[C][C][C] Rainbow Burn: 20+ damage. Does 20 more damage for each different type of Basic Energy attached to this Pokemon.

When Pokemon-EX has been Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Weakness: Water (x2)
Resistance: Fighting (-20)
Retreat: 2

When released, how will this card alter the metagame? What decks will it see played in? How will it be played?

1. I honestly don't see this changing the game unless something popular has a x2 weakness to fire and this thing has 3 different energy on it. 3 for 80 is good, but there are more powerful cards already out there. Besides, if you really want the 80 damage, you have to run 3 energy types. (unless Rainbow Energy counts for an individual type when on Ho-Oh. There might already be a ruling on it (iirc there was another Ho-Oh ex that had this same attack))

2. Well, I could see it being played in a deck that already has a few different energy types. That doesn't seem too practical from first glance but for all I know, there's probably a way to make it work.

3. You just get three different energy types on it. If you run it in a fire deck, you could probably get it set up in 2 turns if you use Inferno Fandango. That's about all I see in it.

This card might gain popularity as a donk deck with a lot of cards like Juniper and Ultra Ball to pull the 80+ turn 1.

It's just hard to play because of its requirements of at least 3 different Basic Energy to do decent damage.

What really irks me about this card a whole lot is that its excellent ability is based off of a coin flip!

I could imagine running 3 or 4 of 4 different energy types (like {F}{R}{W}{P} just for the sake of argument) and pulling off 100 damage on the FIRST turn!! That's magnificent! If multiple Ho-Oh EX can each use their Phoenix Ability consecutively in one turn, then that's certainly reassuring! But I suppose, with such fast setup potential they would have to balance it out with a coinflip... bleh, 100 damage isn't really that much by itself, but I can understand that firing it off on the first turn can build brutal momentum!

I'm not sure what partner Pokemon go well with Ho-Oh EX, but I can surely say we've got Juniper and Ultra Ball to help us discard energy, and Ho-Oh EX!

Ho-oh EX doesn't really appeal to me. This is because it could be easily knocked out by the infamous Mewtwo EX (which is what most people will run after the tins come out). It's Pheonix Abilty is a great abilty. It's like having a free revive and another 3 energies to go~. However, the abilty of this Pokemon could be countered by a catcher, then a Mewtwo EX, allowing Mewtwo EX to deal 60 more damage along with the other energy it has attached to itself. Its weakness is good, considering there are not too many playable water decks out there. Also it's resistance is 20- to fighting is a great abilty to have to counter Terrakion decks. Overall, this card has both it's pros and cons, it's good but certainly not the best. Also this card would go great in a Zekeels deck.

Free revive? I would never play it from my hand tp the Bench. Just imagine having to attach those manually. By the way, Empoleon Terrakion seems to be doing pretty well, so I wouldn't disregard the {W} Weakness.

I think this card would only work for donks, but the problem is 100 isn't enough to reliably donk anything in this format. The only thing I see this card doing is being a tech in some kind of crazy colorless attacker deck. Mewtwo, Tornadus, Regigigas, this thing, and something similar to Electrode Prime.

When released, how will this card alter the metagame?
Alter the metagame...I really have no idea. It's an interesting card, and while I can see it having potential with some weird juniper/ultra ball acceleration, I don't think it'll change how we play anything. The ability is flippy, and the damage output is not fantastic when it needs so many (most likely) special energy piled on it to do serious damage and hit almost nothing for weakness. Meanwhile, Empoleon can take it out with only 8 total Pokemon in play, which isn't all that hard to do.

What decks will it see played in?
I'm imagining some sort of acceleration with Beautifly or Terrakion-EX, or something similar, but I can't see it being all that fast or strong. I've seen an idea being tossed around where you use Phoenix to revive Ho-oh as some sort of acceleration for the rest of your team, but...meh. In the end the attack is an incredibly nerfed X-ball, which not only can't use the opponent's energy, but requires a variety of energy in the first place.

How will it be played?
Without Junk Arm and Shaymin UL, it's not all that easy to use Phoenix, attach energy, move it, and SSU the Ho-oh back to your hand, or something similar, as if that was a simple plan in the first place. I don't feel like Ho-oh will be making too much of a splash this year, with an attack that needs 4 special energy, or 4 different basic energy, just to hit 100. I do think, though, that it'll remain one of those weird fan favorites that people keep trying to make work.

Rating: 6.5/10
The card isn't necessarily bad, but the attack is outclassed by X-ball, the weakness is dangerous with the rise of Emploeon and possibly Keldeo in a few months, and the ability, as cool as it is, doesn't have much to offer in terms of an efficient form of acceleration.

The card shouldn't be used for attacking ever. It could be used in any collorless deck that needs a little bit of energy acceleration, but doesn't need constant energy attachments like Emboar provides.
