How many classic sets?

I've recently taken up card collecting again (and just collecting this time; not playing) and I've decided to collect every set from Base to Skyridge with the older sets being my biggest priority.

So I have a few questions...

How many types of Base Set are there?
I know there's the 1st Edition set, the Shadowless set and the Unlimited set, but are there more? I've heard of THICK cards. What are those?

Are there only Limited and Unlimited sets from Jungle - Neo Destiny?
Are there 1999-2000 Jungle and Fossil sets?

Are there only Normal and Reverse Holo sets for the e-Series?

How much is each set worth and/or what is a good price to pay for them?

Base set first edition will be a TON I'm personally guesstimating at 2000 minimum, but look on ebay and see if you can find an example
 
I already have a decent start to it, but you're right! Those cards are really expensive. It's a goal I have to eventually finish it. =]
 
Base set "thick cards" refer to a 1st edition run where the 1st edition stamp was supposed to be thicker that the original "thin" 1st edition stamp. I never could see the difference. I welcome information about this.

Your "Last Run" is 4th printing Base set.
 
Hey dolphin I am also a collector of early cards. I only collect first generation however, I paid 1000 for my base set first edition set but i've seen them sell for as little as 600. I didn't pay over 100 for jungle or fossil first editions. the first edition gym sets cost 250 each but I'm sure you can find them cheaper. I paid just over 100 for my team rocket first editions which I was happy with. base set 2 was only 100. this is just what I paid i'm not saying this is what they are worth or what you should pay.
 
I just paid $54 for a 1st edition Team Rocket set and $70 for a complete Base Set 2. I think I got pretty decent deals.

I have some money setting aside in case a really good condition 1st edition Base Set becomes for sale! =]

I've only ever seen "think" holo cards. I wonder if the rest of the set can be found in "thick"?
 
wow yeah really good deals you got. I have seen a complete psa graded thick base set on ebay for 16000 but thats way overpriced.
 
Wow, yeah I can't spend that much money on cards... lol Maybe I'll just have to cross that set off my list.
