Hi all,

I've been debating on what to do in regards to buying pokemon games.I have played Black and white and I'm curious to see what are the main differences in regards to plots, pokemon, gyms etc. Are they essentially the same game?

Also, would I miss out not being able to connect online (I use to be able to but now can't for some reason) or would this not hold back my gameplay experience.
I'm trying to figure out whether to buy BW2 HG/SS or save for a 3ds and X&Y.

Thanks in advance,
(Sorry if this is in the wrong place)

Really, it's up to you. Pokemon Black and White 2 are pretty similar to the original games, however there are still some differences. I don't know if you can afford to buy B/W2 and H/G and 3DS in the meantime and X/Y later in fall, if you can't, save the money for 3DS/X/Y (I bet they're pricey). Also, you would not miss a lot if you can't connect online, you just couldn't get any particular berries in Unova except Dream World and B/W2.

B/W2 start off very differently, but once you get to the main part of Unova they feel very much the same. (Even some of the item placements/NPCs are exactly the same). So, terrain-wise... meh. The gyms are still largely the same leaders, but all of them have been redesigned and get their own theme. I like them a lot better in B2/W2.
The wider variety of Pokemon is an improvement. I loved using 5th gen Pokemon in B/W, but I did start to miss seeing my old favorites.
The new features range from bad to good. The movie theater thing? Lame. Hated it. The Pokemon World Tournament? Amazing. Loved it.
The plot is forgettable compared to B/W's in my opinion. I JUST played White2 over again, and I can barely remember any plot details. Something about Team Plasma trying to cover Unova in ice? Eh. I can tell B/W's story right off the top of my head. It was a lot more memorable and had a lot of 'oomph' to it.
The E4 are still the same, but the Champion isn't. Won't spoil it in case you do get the game, but I will say this: It's a MAJOR improvement.

Now, minor things!
Music: Better for the most part, much more lively, and almost all of the new themes are great (especially the Rival and Champion themes.)
Graphics: Slightly improved, but obviously not by much. The only sprites to get new animations are the starters and their evolutions, and a couple random Pokemon like Nidoqueen that got minor tweaks. The battlegrounds look better, as they now have visible grass/stones/ etc. to give them more depth. Some of the attack animations are different and they look nice.
Post-game: More to do than B/W, for sure. Lots of legendaries to catch if that's your thing, and more to explore.

So really... It's a mixed bag. They sit on about the same level overall as B/W for me. If you're short on money though, I would wait - X/Y look like they're going to be incredible.

I like BW2 a lot more, because BW felt really empty after HGSS and BW2 makes up for it, with PWT, PokéStar, Join Avenue, Funfest, Medal Rally, White Treehollow and Black Tower, as well as the the Battle Subway, Musicals and Dream World from BW.

Also, expect XY to be as empty as BW, because the initial games of each Generation are done by a different team than those who do the 3rd game/squeal.

RE: Is it worth it to buy Black/White 2

Like Blob, I enjoyed BW2 a lot more than BW. I felt it was a stronger game experience, and while many of the changes weren't particularly large, they were fun and it pulled the game into a more cohesive whole. The plot isn't as strong as the original BW plot, but then... it's a main series Pokémon game; they aren't exactly known for their strong plots in the first place. Gameplay is what makes the Pokémon series fun.

Though, if it's a choice between this, HGSS, and 3DS/XY... I'd probably go XY in a heartbeat just because it's new, and playing a new Pokémon game at the same time as a lot of other people in a community is a very fun experience. HGSS is also a lot of fun, especially if you haven't played GSC in a while.

RE: Is it worth it to buy Black/White 2

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions,
I think I'm going to get HG/SS and then get the 3DS near the time when the 3rd game of X&Y comes out as this will give me more time to save up for them. It's funny because I can remember more about D&P than BW for some reason...apart from the fact I traded before the E4 In B&W and it was quite easy compared to the Low leveled pokemon playthrough I did on pearl recently.

Anyways thanks for the suggestions again

I definitely thought it was worth getting Black 2 and White 2. Although most of the region is the same, there are also new cities and places that weren't in Black and White. Also the gyms have been redesigned, and many cities and routes look different now. What really made the newer versions worth getting for me are the changes to Black City, White Tree Hollow, Pokémon World Championships, and the Join Avenue. They offer a lot to do after you beat the game.

If buying the games means you won't be able to afford a 3DS and X or Y, I would not buy them, because the new games look great. But if you can afford both, I would do it!

EDIT: For HG and SS, I really loved the remakes of the second generation games. The gameplay hasn't changed much from the original Gold and Silver, but the graphics have improved a lot. Unlike the original they work with Wi-Fi like the newer games, and all Pokémon from generation 1-4 are available in it. There are also some nice events which you can unlock with faithful encountered Pokémon. The Safari Zone moved to another location with many improvements, and you are able to catch a lot more legendary Pokémon in the remakes.

Pretty much this. For all of the changes they made, the bulk of the game feels mainly the same. It depends what you liked or didn't like about the game, the major changes BW2 makes are adding 150 new Pokemon (many of which won't be catchable until late in the game anyway), a different plot, and a few new features. If you were unhappy with things like regional design in BW1, you'll still be unhappy with it in this game.

Personally, I'd recommend getting HGSS or XY.

I think if you're having trouble saving money, I say wait for a 3DS and X/Y c'B

but if you get a chance and can afford it, I definitely recommend BW 2. I thoroughly enjoyed that game a lot.
Though I think you should definitely wait for X/Y and I'm sure there will be people who have no problem helping you with obtaining older Pokemon since BW 2 gave us more incentive to complete the Pokedex, so many of us have everything.
