Is Pokémon No Longer Respected as a Card Game?

This year I went to Otakon. I was in the Game Room, and, me and my friends played pokemon. We were ridiculed by other card gamers, and we couldn't find a single other person playing. Also, in my school anime club, there are people who play Magic And Yu-Gi-Oh, but no Pokémon. Why this be?

The fact there weren't many people playing is because there probably aren't many players there. As for the people ridiculing they're just jerks.

Out of 40,00 people at Otakon, I should of seen one pokemon card outside of myself and my friends. But no.

It's a yearly thing. People from around the world come, people all over the nation.

Huh interesting. I know I've been ridiculed some so pokemon isn't really respected by a lot of people that don't like it or don't play it. And you have to have not played it to not like it lol.

Some people say it's too confusing. That annoys me. It's not confusing, they're just stupid.

My sister doesn't like the TCG because she claims it's "Too complicated." :/

Don't listen to Yu-Gi-Oh players - their community is "bad" to say the least :p

Woah woah woah, too complicated? Perhaps it is too complicated for their Big Bang Theory Sheldon like minds. I would automatically assume that people would say that Pokemon TCG is a game that takes no skill, because it is a children's card game, but too complicated? C'mon man.

The one problem of why the game isn't growing is because it is trying to cater to a niche market. The game doesn't grow if you cater to the same people all the time. That is why there are geographical patches where the game isn't played because its competitors Magic and Yugioh tries to spread the game, rather than market to a larger target audience, which are older kids, rather than have this sense that this is a kids game. Kids don't even play the game that much, but younger teens do. Even the younger kids have this misunderstanding that Pokemon TCG is a kids game, and they would feel like they have "devolved" if they played this game, it is all due to marketing.

Of the 3 TCGs I follow, Pokemon, Magic, and Yugioh, I probably learned Pokemon TCG the quickest. It took me a few games to get a grip on Magic, and I still haven't learned Yugioh thoroughly yet. Those 4 digit life points are hard to keep track in your mind, and those small text boxes that require a magnifying glass to read. It isn't to say that I don't have any yugioh cards, because I have a fair share of yugioh cards. Because I started buying Magic packs earlier, I have more MTG cards over Pokemon and Yugioh.

I'm just sad that Pokemon TCG isn't played in more places.

Wasn't Otakon during the same weekend as Worlds? That would help explain the lack of Pokemaniacs around. In my city we had an Anime expo during that same weekend and there was pretty much no Pokemon TCG fans there. They were all either at the Worlds grinder, or at home keeping their eyes on updates.

Explain further, I don't get what you're driving at.
The YGO fanbase, as a whole, has a reputation for being...well, somewhat seedy. They aren't like that everywhere (the YGO players at the card shop I go to are a great bunch), but there are some really shady figures at big tournaments.

This is part of the reason why I have become disenchanted with the Pokemon TCG lately. It is marketed as a children's game, even though people of all ages can play and enjoy it - and on top of that, quite easily. It may also be the reason why it's ridiculed against uneducated outsiders.

Pokemon TCG is one of the simplest TCGs out there to pick up and learn. Anyone who says it's too complicated is just not willing to learn in the first place...no offense intended, but that is what I have seen. I'm familiar with YGO and Magic, and I'm the reverse of signofzeta - YGO is easier for me, and although I know how Magic is played, I don't really know the intricacies of the game (mostly because I've played it only once in my life), but I know that's because I haven't bothered to dive into it.

Bottom line, Podote, do not let it get to you. If you and your friends enjoy playing Pokemon TCG with each other, then by all means go ahead. You do not need to let the jeers of others dictate your actions. As long as you have fun, that is what is important.

I have friends that play all 3 games, and my personal favorite is Pokémon. I do know how to play all 3 games, and Magic is by far the most complicated (but that makes it fun at the same time). Yu-Gi-Oh is okay, but I really don't like some of the people that play. Some of them are real jerks. Plus the game imo really depends on how well you draw, and I don't like that.
But Pokémon has the nicest people and I think the game is really fun. I do wish that it was a little more skill intensive but I think that the game is getting there. I also kinda wish they catered to more of an older demographic rather than being stuck on "we are a children's card game". Maybe some day...

I think it has gotten less popular over the years. When it first came out, league attendance was huge, but now, not so much. I can't speak for every region of course, but just from what I've seen, the popularity has dwindled a lot. When I attended my first league, there were probably 30-50 kids who showed up. The league I'm at now, we're lucky to get 10. The Yu-Gi-Oh players come the same night, but their group isn't that huge either, maybe 15 tops.

During the very beginning of the game, I remember not being able to find booster packs at stores because they would sell out so quickly. Second hand card vendors would pop up in the mall and sell holos at outrageous prices; sports cards vendors would also cater to the Pokemon crowd. Now there are no more vendors and there are always plenty of packs to choose from in the big box stores. I really wish it'd make a come back in my area.

As far as the game being complicated, I don't know who would say such a thing, especially if they're playing Yu-Gi-Oh or Magic. Now those games to me seem confusing. I think the bottom line is, those who made fun of you have some serious growing up to do. I don't know why they'd ridicule you for playing a card game since that's what they were doing too. Who cares what card game it is; it's all the same really. You're doing it to have fun. People these days just crave negativity and can't wait to put someone down. I hate it.

And is it just me, or is Magic really gaining popularity? I remember when I was younger, pokemon and ygo were the big ones played, I sometimes saw Magic packs, but nobody ever played it.

If I had to fathom a guess right now...

Magic>>>>>>everything else.

I know so many people who play Magic it's ridiculous. It's like a secret cult - everybody plays it and us outsiders don't know what the sign they flash each other is in public to identify each other :D

They give off this Aura that says, "I have a deck with me of Magic Cards, challenge me."

Pokemon TCG players should learn how to do that. We need a way to show we're open to be challenged by other players.

I believe it. Its the exact same here. The little local card shop had to shut down the Pokemon League they were running because not enough people were interested, there was just a small little band of friends compared to the mass amount of Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic players. No one can make me believe it is a more complicated card game than Yu-Gi-Oh or especially Magic, Pokemon is fairly easy compared to those. I think its just because there are still a lot of people that live under a rock and think Pokemon died years ago. That, combined with the fact that the other card games tend to have "scarier" and more realistic type monsters that attract older players, while the designs of Pokemon have more of a simple cartoony appearance, and tend to appeal more to, well, 10 year olds.

People now days that are new to the current Pokemon fanbase tend to stay away from it in fear of getting made fun of, so its hard to attract new people particularly to the card game. It's easy for the younger age group, but near impossible to convert an older person.

I really, really have a grudge against Yu-Gi-Oh for of the amount of the Pokemon fanbase it stole.
