Is Pyroar Dead?

Hello world. Right now, with all the new Primal Clash cards, with many of them being evolution cards? Would a Pyroar deck still be playable for cities? Right now it seems to be doing ok, but now there are so many threats. Is Pyroar dead?

Interestingly, in the casual area I play, like no one plays Pyroar anymore. Probably because my area is not very meta meaning players have the chance to make really unique (non-basic) decks. It sorta makes Pyroar useless, especially now that Water decks are reviving.

I feel that with Primal Kyogre EX's projected popularity, Pyroar is more than dead, relatively speaking.

Considering the majority of the top decks next format will have stage 1's as the main focus of the deck? Yes.

I'm not sure. Where I play (STL, Missouri), I've been seeing a decent amount of Pyroar still. The deck's match-up against VirGen is near perfect, which is why I think Pyroar is so popular here still (VirGen is the most played deck at my league). Another thing I've seen is Pyroar as a tech. My friend's SeismiGarb runs a 2-2 Pyroar just to help the VirGen match-up. Pyroar definitely isn't thriving, but it isn't dead in my opinion. My guess is someone is gonna take an easy Cities win with a Pyroar deck because everyone forgets to tech for it. Post Primal Clash though, I'm thinking Pyroar is about at the end of the line.

Pyroar isn't dead, but it defenitely isn't viable as a standalone deck. The only Tier 1 ways I can think of using it is in Gengar-EX decks and Seismitoad-EX decks. Solo Pyroar with a few tech Fire Types can't win because, even though they get a lot of solid matchups, they still have a few here or there where Intimidating Mane becomes useless:

Good Matchups:
Virizion-EX/Genesect-EX
Bronzong/Dialga-EX/Aegislash-EX
Seismitoad-EX (without Garbodor)
Plasma/Aqua/Magma
Night March (without Flareon or Gourgeist)
Yveltal-EX (without Garbodor or M Manectric-EX)
Aromatisse Toolboxes (without M Kangaskhan-EX/M Gardevoir-EX)
Fighting Toolboxes (without Garbodor or Crobat)

Bad Matchups:
Anything with Garbodor, Megas, Stage 1's/2's, or Shredders(cards that aren't affected by other effects i.e. Latias-EX & Rayquaza)

Pyroar is pretty much dead. It would be clunky in a Gengar deck and the Seismitoad version is far from tier 1. Pyroar might have a couple of autowins across the field but it just losses to a lot of other stuff. Lets run through Seis / Pyroar's matchups assuming you play 1 or 2 Mewtwo.

Good Matchups:
  • Metal without Aggron
  • Yveltal (without Garb)
  • Night March with Mew
  • Florges / Aromatisse
  • VirGen
  • Seis / Slurpuff
  • Plasma

Bad Matchups:
  • Metal with Aggron
  • Yveltal with Garb (Hard Charm variation)
  • Primal Kyogre
  • Night March with Eeveelutions
  • Landorus / Crobat
  • Fairybox with Manectric or Kanga
  • Gardevoir / Aromatisse
  • Donphan
  • Primal Groudon
  • Mega Manectric

There are more bad matchups for Pyroar than there are good matchups. Pyroar just straight up losses to a fair share of the bad matchups and you really can't afford to do that in a tournament.

Seismitoad slurpuff is not that bad of a match up against pyroar if you can get a turn 1 quaking punch. I play a Yvelatl deck without any evolutions and have beaten every pyroar deck that I have played against so also not that bad of a matchup.

Most decks right now play evolutions and other ways to deal with pyroar. This makes pyroar less playable. Pyroar hasnt gained much support sinsce it came out aside from the pyroar that came out in phantom forces and scorched earth, where as almost every other deck has gained support. Its not dead but it is also not as good as it used to be in my opinnion.
