Is the Pokemon TCG dying?

Yeah I was reading this thread on PokeGym and it kinda got me curious however I don't think the Pokemon TCG is dying or at least anytime soon anyway:

http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=118385

Just thought I'd bring this up to see what you people think about it. I mean seriously the Pokemon TCG is doing great right now so I don't see what the problem is. Would the recession have anything to do with it I suppose?

It seems like what the OP (original poster) at PokeGym is concerned about is that there hasn't been any new announcements made yet regarding to events being scheduled for States or other events especially Nationals this year. There's a theory where people try to contact people in management in the game, and are brushed aside, or told that no info can be disclosed at the time. A couple months later, there’s a press release confirming what some have surmised.

So there's been rumors going around that the POP budget was cut this year judging from what I read on the thread I linked to here. Could reprinting Claydol and Uxie as Promos for League is POP/PUI's way of ending the League Program with a bang? I mean HeartGold/SoulSilver (a new Base Set) is about to be released in the U.S. and he's worried the game is gonna die. If Japan keeps printing sets for the game then the game is going to survive, it's that simple cause we get our sets translated for English use straight from Japan.

"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated"

Honestly, don't worry about it. The evidence supporting its life carrying on is much stronger than that of an end. They are doing way too much right now for the game.

I have been reading it since it was first posted.

http://pokegym.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1622293&postcount=58

And here is a post from someone who actually works for pokemon. Have you even read the thread? And both sides of the argument?

I understand things have not gone as planned this year, but that is hardly a reason to come to such a conclusion like the OP in its entirety dying.

Yes i did,and i dont think it is dying,as we just get more playerrs into this game.

We had the biggest nationals ever last year. Even bigger than when the game was "popular." Granted that may have been because saint louis is easier to get to than Hawaii...

.
Nationals were being held in the Heart of America... Ohio...

I can't think of an easier state to get to than Ohio...

Well I don't belive it is going down and suprise suprise this article comes from PokeGym of course. ANyway it is not going to die it is to big and the DS games are made by nintendo so that helps I guess.

Before I got back into Pokemon, I thought it was pretty much dead to be honest. Because the Neo era just seemed like crap to me, there was nothing to it. And thats when it seemed almost everyone gave up on it as well. But when I cam back, it had surprised me as to how many people still play. I think that if it was able to survive the Neo era, it is pretty much gonna live as long as they decide to make the cards.

I can see why a PUSA employee might be pessimistic because they have gotten a LOT of really negative feedback lately. But thats why they are giving away free Claydols and Didn't cut any sets last year. Because they are trying to win back the crowd. But liking PUSA and liking pokemon TCG are two different things.

Yeah but you only say that because your in Ohio, besides if your going to hold a Natl event it has to be easy to reach and Missouri and Kansas are in the middle for everyone.

The game can't be dying i'm still playing! :D so long as we have players a game does not die, raise your hand if you want to discontinue this game from dying!
:D

...I hereby declare this game of the pokemon trading cards...uh...not dead! *Slammes hammer!* :p

If people are still continuing to buy and/or play the pokemon TCG then there is no way it can be canceled, plus we are on the verge of a whole new LEGEND set! And possibly the 5th gen of pokemon. :D :D

It's a non issue. TCG is not going downhill, it is growing and expanding. Not sure of the motives of the people propagating this, but whatever!

As per points brought up in subsequent posts on that thread...I am going to dismiss what the OP had to say on that thread altogether...there is no refutable evidence that POP nor the TCG is dying...turnouts last year were in record number...hell even Kansas' States had a record turnout, I should know I was there...and the only thing that has slowed turnouts this year from acheiving record numbers has been the weather. People being worried that Nats' location and date have not been announced really need to stop...and also think that with the amount of the turnout last year and expected turnout this year...and the way that, even with it being an overall decent experience for most, there were still some mismanagement that could be improved upon for this year...for instance, the fact that St. Louis' downtown is closed during weekends, which left many Nats attendees without conveniences and other wanted amenities...so they very well may be looking for a better location and may be negotiating said location as we speak...like the Overland Park Convention Center near Kansas City, MO...cheap location, centralized location for the rest of the US, lots of surrounding lodging, with plenty of shopping and conveniences that are open throughout the weekend, and it's a very low crime area...not to mention, no union for convention workers, so less money has to be payed for convention hall use

there are alot of reasons why nats haven't been announced yet, while Worlds has...but to jump to the conclusion that the TCG is dying, is really just preposterous and illogical...granted, I don't neccessarily like the direction of the TCG, but the game has gone through many changes just like this one...albeit, I think the Lv. X mechanic was one of the shortest lived, but imo the best one they've done so far and could have gone for so much longer...and this probably won't be the last time

honestly, I will probably go as far as saying, the OP of that post on pokegym has absolutely no clue of what they are talking about...the post of the person that works for TPCi proves just that

I'll be honest, the date getting set for Worlds before Nationals or States makes by far more sense to me than anything I've heard in reference to this. The Worlds organization has to take twice as long as either of the other 51 tournaments happening this year still in OP, so the date makes more sense.

Anyway, the game isn't dying. I think we'll see another resurgence with 5th Generation and Heart Gold Soul Silver. I doubt that the game is going anywhere until it dies. Plus, it tends to be one of those things that kids pick up for at least a little while, so that should keep things open for us older folk who play competitively for a while yet.

it seems like it at first but i think they are just begging a transition to possibly a bigger and better OP system. at least i hope

You'd be surprised. MLB Showdown was one of the best games to play and lasted from 2000-2005. While many players dropped the game due to it eventually being run into the ground on purpose, there were still plenty of die-hards. About 2 weeks before an expansion set in 2005, it was announced that it would be the last set ever and that there would be no cities/super regionals.

However, I doubt Pokemon would go down this road, at least on a pace such as Showdown went. HG/SS is about to be released on both the DS and in the TCG. Many of you have brought up the fact that player's numbers at tourneys have increased. I don't see Pokemon being cancelled at least for a few more years.

We'll we don't know much about the 5th Generation currently and the direction of the franchise seems to be going back to Johto due to HeartGold/Soulsilver, remakes of Pokemon Gold and Silver for the Nintendo DS.

I've tried to but when I tried finish reading the rest of the thread Page 6 and 7 currently it wouldn't let me and said I was blacklisted or something, that's what I hate about PokeGym cause their boards are setup to where you can't read stuff on their forums unless you're not blacklisted.

Maybe If PUSA would announce when States and Nationals are gonna be held soon then there wouldn't be a problem now would there? It seems like alot of Pokemon TCG players are impatient and are expecting an anouncement soon and If it doesn't come soon they probably think the worst case scenario for the game might happen.

Just because nats hasn't been revealed yet, doesn't make the game is dying.
dates for states will probably come up during/after prereleases.
TPCi doesn't organize states, the PTOs do.
I've heard from many people that St. Louis was a bad location and that the convention center or w/e was bad also.
So I'm expecting since it's such a long delay, that they are trying to get it right for us.
Hopefully it's in a better location than last year.
