Straight from the get-go when this theme was announced, I knew which Pokémon I needed to do. Sawsbuck, who has only ever had 3 cards and up till Cosmic Eclipse had gone over 8 years without a card. It was the cherry on top to know that Kavross was up for it as well! We had a short discussion an almost went with a Galarian Form, but we were informed those didn't count for this round since they wouldn't have had an opportunity to get any cards yet anyway. Sawsbuck was inevitable.
Just like any other entry I make with the Omnium Template, I've got my trademark bulleted list of things to keep in mind:
- The wording is SM or the latest syntax of a specific effect if no such effect exists in the SM era.
- The layout for the attack area is based off of the classic/Neo era. Following that, "Ability" is written in the same red text as the ability name.
- All Omnium cards are meant to be balanced for the 2010-2011 Standard Rotation, or slightly more broadly any set from Diamond & Pearl base set to Noble Victories.
- Fonts and placements should be pixel-perfect as they were made using my templates, which places all the fonts exactly where they should be.
I had a bit of a realization as I was making this that Sawsbuck's primary type is Colorless, which meant that the Grass-type icon over a white type orb wouldn't have been correct, which is a shame, because I think it looks better. The Colorless-type icon over the green orb is nice, but it's not very easy to make the icon look the best over all the different type orbs. That's just how it goes sometimes, though, with the old EX-era dual type orbs. Whatcha gonna do? As for the "why" of having the Colorless typing in there at all, because I have heard people ask about that, there are a good number of cards that interact with Colorless-type Pokémon, such as Skyarrow Bridge, Aspertia City Gym, and Necrozma GX.
The weakness and resistance are just a combination of the two types. Fire weakness from the Grass typing, Fighting weakness from the Colorless typing. The resistance hearkens back to the Classic era cards, which kept it in as a resistance because of Ghost type. I rather like it there, and it gives Colorless Pokémon just a tiny bit more identity and more or less makes up for their Fighting weakness. The retreat cost of 2 is standard for Sawsbuck cards and the 90HP is taken straight off of a Rapidash card in DPPt, so it should be right in the goldizone, too. The "Winter Form" is there because I thought it was a nice touch back in the day when cards used to tell you what form the Pokémon was in, if they had one. This is a non-intrusive way to bring that back to the TCG, and in some of my official sets I actually have cards for other Pokémon in the works that interact with specific forms.
Which brings us to the technical parts of the card. Harvest Augur was an idea I ended up on at the end of chasing a rabbit trail while trying to think of season-based effects. As I said above, I really couldn't and still can't think of anything I like that would be more related to seasons, so I just went where the rabbit trail led. Black & White 2 had Pokédex entries for them that called them "harbingers of spring". I reckon Autumn or harvest season isn't something they couldn't also be a "harbinger" of, so in this case they're forecasting the harvest by showing you what you might get when you harvest your rewards for beating up your opponent sufficiently: your prize cards. This is for a format where cards like Town Map and Here Comes Team Rocket don't exist, or else this wouldn't be that wild of an effect.
Focus Fracas is what really makes the Ability shine, though. Originally I meant for it to just flip the prize cards back over, but when I noticed that
Gallade SW 6 already did something pretty close to that, I changed it up a little. In this instance, you can't just use the Ability to keep track of your prize cards (though you can choose to not shuffle a specific prize if you like it enough), but instead allows you to shuffle them back into your deck, which itself may be an advantage if you, for example, need a Prism Star card and have a search card in your hand. It has utility, and the power, assuming this card is on its own, is the same other cards in the era from what I can tell. Plus it's max power gets smaller and smaller as the game goes on. It has a lot of fun potential, and I'm all about that. The name is a bit funny, I'll admit. I liked the alliteration, and it my mind it's this Sawsbuck focusing hard on using its insight of the upcoming harvest to create commotion. He's focusing to create a fracas.
Again, this is much better in the early game. I think in the future I'll focus on more general or late-game effects if I can. Three early-game cards wouldn't get me very far if I were to try making a deck with just my CaC entries.
