a black professor ?

I edited the title of the thread to follow the sensible title rule. ~Xous

RE: Just me wanted

Is this a bad racist joke? -_-

Need I remind you that Black&White have to deal with Yin and Yang rather than races. The games appear to be cloesly tied to the Shinto and Tao beliefs (at least some parts of it). These religions are ASIAN. Pokemon is a Japanese-made game. If anything, an Asian race would make sense for the characters.

The professor in black is the same one as in white. Just as in the past games.

If you are going to make the statement that Pokemon is being racist... tough luck ;P Racism has nothing at all to do with this game. The professor is only a character, and thus far, we have seen zero intentional racism (Jynx doesn't count). We don't even know (officially) the races of many past characters. Get a life dude ;P

RE: Just me wanted

Wouldn't a darker skin colour make it harder to see facial features, as the outlines of mouth/nose/eyes etc. are all black?

Not sure where you're going with this, but whatever.

RE: Just me wanted

Uhhh.. well... like Zero said, it's like Ying/Yang. Not skin colors. Also, if you think about it, you'd have to like make it lighter as it would be harder to see facial stuff. No offence or anything. Just blame the graphics .-.

^
They just said that. :l

Anyways, come on be happy with Brock. Isn't he black enough for ya.

RE: Just me wanted

Heavenly Spoon, I worked on a pixel based game in the past, in which some of the characters were black. I had no problems with their facial features. You can do a lot with shading and highlights. And people are never really "black".

I think it's more then logical that the people in Pokemon games, and in most Japanese media, are rarely black. Because only a very small percentage of the people in Japan have dark skin.

RE: Just me wanted

i think you all took this the wrong way

i dont think the fact the game is called black and white has something to do with wanting a black professor

all the previous professors have been white
and it would be a cool change

i highly doubt they meant it in a racist way

RE: Just me wanted

I think it is a little rascist that there have never been any real black trainers. I mean Dahlia, Phoebe and Brock look black, but I'm pretty sure they are just dark-skinned Asians.

In saying that, I want a black gym leader at least!

yeah it is not right for everyone to be white in pokemon. We should be able to customize our characters appearance at the beginning of the game

^...no. Pokemon is made in Japan. The characters are not white, they are light-skinned Asians. Many Japanese people consider fairer people better-looking, so it makes perfect sense. It really is totally reasonable.

Agreed on the customization for characters. I've always kind of wanted that but it's super unlikely it's going to happen this gen. at least.

I do agree with wanting to see more black NPCs. Suree, it's Japanese made and there aren't a lot of black people in Japan but it would still be nice. And I don't think it's that bad of an idea for in future generations if there was a black professor. In fact I'd think it'd be kind of nice. However, I'm still just happy with a female professor finally so, you know what they say. One miracle at a time. :)

And for the customization, if they did do that eventually they could have the "Meeting the Prof/Running Through The Basics" just say at first "Are you a boy or girl?" And then you choose and then depending on which gender you chose there would be, I don't know, 2 or maybe 3 different trainers to choose from with different skin color?

A black professor would be... I don't know. It might be nice, just to have a little international peace in Pokemon, but Pokemon is Japanese, so that's what they're based off of. If there was a black professor, they may be controversy, and Pokemon doesn't need anymore of that. (Jynx, anyone?)

oh i
need to say this...

first i am black myself

''oh why cant he/she be black"
"oh hey this game is raicist"
its a Japanese game with real life real tones asian people.
not white
asian
sure i would love to see a black elite4 member or gym leader
but not likely
the same thing happened with jynx
jynx is based off a culture in japan when woman dye their have blond and get x-treme tans

I always thought of the pokemon universe as a unified race. That being said, as many have stated before me, the games are made in Japan. Japan is in Asia, where there are not that many black people. The artwork for the main characters is supposed to be asian. However with the games coming over to the USA and other countries that have a high number of whites, we envision the characters as white due to the light tone of the characters skin and the lack of asian features. The eyes of the characters are not squinted and small, because of this we see them as a race in our own country similar to the artwork.

Heck the only people in pokemon that could be called not asian is Lt. Surge and Dahlia. But even then I consider her to be more Puerto Rican or Coluumbian, something south of Texas. (This may be ignorant so I apologize beforehand, but I have never seen a black person with blue eyes).

However to avoid the issue, customization of the main character would be helpful.

You can add Fantina to that list~ (She's french in the English version right?)
In the Japanese it just says she's from a foreign country (presumably it's English though since she keeps using English phrases)

Also, may I just say my friend, your post above is among the most agreeable and intelligent posts i've ever seen on these forums. I applaud you.
