I ask you: Is it really necessary? Or do you think that a "fat tax" is a much-needed step towards an obese-free america. Or am I worrying too much? As WPM always says... Discuss!

Well, it's totally necessary. With the growing number of obesity around America, I think it's high time Obama came up and stoped this. He's a cool dude! ;)

And DarkraiMaster, believe me, getting slim is like getting from hell to heaven. I have experienced it, and it's awesome!

Yep, not my state. It does sound beneficial. I despise fat people who take out their problems on everyone else. Hopefully, this will decrease America's obesity problems.

dmaster out.

Pretty much blackmailing people to stop eating isn't the answer. The gov. should promote healthy eating instead.

Duh. The government has been promoting healthy eating for YEARS. The problem is that people just don't listen.

Doesn't affect me though, here in Asia we don't have many of these 'creative' taxes. And besides, my BMI has always been well below 20 (I'm underweight).

This is completely unnecessary and stupid. You can't say someone is too fat and foce them to pay more taxes. fat people are people too. My mom is a little overweight, and she's tried a ton of diets and excercise routines, but they just don't work. Also, the government shouldn't be able to tell you what and how much you can eat. In America, it used to be that if, for some insane reason, you wanted to be fat, you could without paying extra anything but food costs.

You make it sound like obesity is a problem for everyone, and not just those who suffer from it. No one is forcing you to become fat, nor has anyone forced them into obesity. Sure, it has health problems, but if you're not fat, it doesn't affect you. Besides, it's not Obama who's doing it, it's the state of Alabama. -_-

And we all learn how to become healthy in, like, our first year of school. No diets, nothing special, just balance activity with food. Taxing people for not excercising is like punching somebody for not putting paper in the recycle bin. Unecessary.

DogMaster40, if you were obese before and understood what they go through everyday, you would know how hard it is for them to get slim. It's like a curse that they were born with. :(
Well, I was in the same state too, so I know. And I just said that it's a good thing the government is doing for the obese people. Don't take it thw wrong way please.
And about the whole Alabama thing, my bad! :p

I'm sorry, I fail to see how taxing them more is helping them. Like I said, my mom has tried to lose weight very often, and hasn't had very much success. If someone in Alabama is having trouble losing weight, and the tax passes, it hurts them more than it helps them, since they won't be able to have extra money for gym memberships and excercise equipment. I understand that they need help, but this is the wrong way to do it.

The government isn't trying to help these people, and looking back at other past "this is supposed to 'help; people" things by the government, they tend to just take away rights. These fat people will just eat something else if they have to pay too much for their burgers. duh. lol

I like the fat tax to pay for health insurance. Obesity is easily avoided by eating lots of unprocessed vegetables & fruits and avoiding junk food (no, chips & fries do not count as veggies...). Only minimal exercise is needed.
Being slightly overweight, however, should not be taxed. Only full obesity.

Testing blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels as well is a bit much. A diet of pure cholesterol will not increase your heart disease rate.

It is safe to eat a cheeseburger. Once in a long while.

Cheese is good for you. So is beef. Frying and grilling are bad for you.

I agree with DM40. Giving a consequence for not eating healthy, Is like "helping" people stop smoking by raising the price, and adding side effects that make them feel horrible. Not the right way to solve a problem.
