Karate / Tae Kwan Doe / Other Martial Arts

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I've taken a bit of Shotokan, never got anything higher than a white belt, and I've taken some Hapkido as well. I want to get back into Shotokan but the only teacher around here goes off on tangents a lot of the time and starts telling us stories while our bodies get cold. Not a good feeling. =\ I heard there was a Muay Thai place that just opened up though, always wanted to try it.

Orange Belt test this Friday. Can't wait :X

My sensei told me to work on bigger stances, which sucks, because when I got my Yellow Belt they were too big. I can never meet in the middle :/

I should make it. That's probably the only thing I need to work on for my level.

Our teacher tells all of us the same thing about stances. But that's mostly because we only have two girls higher than 2nd degree in our class (one being my little sister), so the rest of us are boys, and we're not very flexible. :F.

Not many of you guys work with weapons. That's pretty new to me, since we use them so much.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

My dad used weapons. I've seen him use a sword and a nunchuck, and when we was done with them, he gave them to me :3

Possibly my last day of practice being a Yellow Belt, and I think I worked on the stance issue.

Also worked on Sanban Kumitae (Spelling?) most of the class. Which was great cuz that's where I need the most work (I've been working on my Kata for nine months, so that's easy. XD Can't wait to perfect Han Nidan).

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

My dad is teaching me the art of stealth, Ninjutsu. I am learning with a sword, and following the strict yet effective Code of Bushido. I really haven't had time though, due to my musical career, and school :(

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

Just passed orange tes and havent come to karate in a week. So now i don't have my belt...still. It's been a month.

Passed my orange test with a supirior grade.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I hold a first-degree black belt in TaeKwonDo. (There's no 'E') It took me a while to get it, and I quit after receiving it when I did more teaching than learning. :/ Oh well. Fun though. Bragging rights too.

Martial Arts Discussion

How long have you been training at it? What is your purpose for fighting? Any particular equipment, or lines of thinking you particularly advocate?

For me: I first tried some martial arts when I was around 15 years old. I quit after about 3 months. Then in college I tried my shot at another martial art, and worked at it for only about a month, because school work was usually rather demanding. It was difficult for me to maintain mental presence in both aspects of my life at the same time....

What about you guys and girls?

EDIT: Also, as Pokémon players, how would you say Pokémon relates to martial arts?

RE: Martial Arts Discussion

I did taekwando as a kid made it to brown belt as teenager I did hapkido made it to blue belt.
I now do jujitsu being doing it for two years I have to say jujitsu is the best martial arts I have done it is more of a aggressive style the locks the throws and the grappling are all good.
There is three styles we learn first is defensive more less to say if you keep going im going to hurt you second style is very aggressive with intent to hurt you learn these two styles before black belt the third style is very nasty and is the last resort which in this case is a matter of life and death as we learn killing moves we learn this style after black belt.
My school is very traditional there are only two belts white and black it is this way because the traditional ways of jujitsu was they all start on white belt and they spent years of training and once the white belt turned brown to black they were ready to take the test there also other factors involved to sit the test we are not allowed to wash our belts as it was tradition in the old way.
It takes around three to four years to become a black belt.
Jujitsu is free style art as well as you can make and think of so many combinations of locks holds throwns attacks to put down your opponent.

My style of weapon is of course the samuri sword we also learn this from day one of training.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

For martial arts, I'm more of a mixed martial arts. I never took the time to learn one. This is because when I was young, say 7 or 8, my mom looked to enroll me in a karate class, only to have the master say that I was at the level of a Red Belt, but it would take too long to get there officially due to age requirements and that. She then took me to a tea kwon do, where the leader basically said that while I have the drive and potential to be a great student, the moralities would hold me back.
However, I've been developing my own martial art as a means of defense and destruction (you haven't lived until you basically OHKO a kid with a snap kick) and have been practicing SAMBO for awhile (since September of last year) now.

I found a lot of tae kwan do and karate are to strict while it is good some times they go to far.
I love jujitsu because of its sneakiness and surprise nothing better than putting some one to sleep who thinks they are tough im no big guy so people think they can push me around or have it over me the look on their faces when I do my locks or holds on them is funny and it has control you basically control the way you want the fight to go.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I started doing Taekwon-Do in Sept. 2012, and so far, so good. Earned my Blue Stripe about a week ago, so from the looks of things, I should have my Blue Belt in Aug., with the possibility of getting my Black Belt as a sophomore in high school.

A question: what's it like, being a Black Belt and knowing that you're of a relatively high rank?

Also, as Pokémon players, how would you say Pokémon relates to martial arts?
I'd have to say the type of community that surrounds it. Nobody is really that judgmental, and in general, if you aren't already friends with someone, it will be easy to kinda just fit in after a while with others.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

Been working at my martial art for about 3 weeks now, I believe. So far, so good. There have been many little times where I didn't follow instructions properly due to confusion but... I'm still so early into it. Its a matter of training and experience at this point. Then I can develop a routine in my mind in order to synchronize myself with the instructor and students!

I'm not really sure there's one specific feeling that can describe it. It all depends on the situation. Since we're trained to react to high-tension situations like being thrown to the ground or being pinned, high-stress situations in general are much less stressful than they would normally. You're just kind of trained to react to them without flipping out. In my experience (different with each person) you also become a bit more protective of your friends and family if they are being threatened by someone or something. Even just playing peacekeeper in a minor argument becomes more of a natural thing.

I guess if I had to pick one feeling it would be a "calming" or "comforting" feeling. You feel a lot less stressed a lot more often.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I just noticed the OP said you're a Black belt. That is sick. I think you need to post a video of yourself going in on someone, I've never seen a black belt in action. Well, except on TV. haha

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

I took Moo Duk Kwan when I was younger for about 4(?) years, I think. Got my black belt and, feeling accomplished, started focusing on other things. Unfortunately, I don't remember much since I started over 15 years ago.

RE: Karate/Tae Kwan Doe/Other Martial Arts

Slightly over a month now, I believe. Screwed up my form during a kicking drill and hurt myself. The pain doesn't bother me at all, its the humiliation of how goofy I looked when I recoiled....

Hmm, I hope you guys and girls keep fighting as well.
