League Help

Hello I am here on behalf my local card shop owner, we wanted to start having pokemon tournaments and become a registered store but we had a few questions that need answering first.

1. Can you restrict the players card pool to certain sets and still be a official Pokémon card shop? For example the players only play cards from the XY sets.

2. Is there any type of special events such as pre-release or a game day where promo product can be given out?

3. Are there any benefits to being an official Pokémon shop?

Sorry if the questions are stupid or vague in any way. Thank you for your time!

RE: Need help

1. Yeah the current standard leagl format is Boundaries crossed - phantom gate. I think most league tournamnets would be played using that format.
2. Yeah at many events promo cards are given out just for participating.
3. Not sure, still trying to get the shop I go to to be an official pokemon shop. If the shop does become offical I know that pokemon does send the shop product and what not for league events.

Answers:

1. The current format for the 2014-15 season of the official Pokemon TCG leagues include Boundaries Crossed, Plasma Storm/Freeze/Blast, Legendary Treasures, everything in XY, and BW Promos 59 and up. If your store is moreso for casual play, then I'd say it's perfectly fine to just go with the Unlimited Format, which allows any card. (except __'s Pikachu, Sneasel/Slowking from Neo Genesis, and Ancient Mew)

2. Pretty much all Promo cards that are singified with a Black Star Promo icon are distributed via special packages in stores. Products that come to mind would include Blister Packs, Tins, EX Boxes, and more. The only Promos that are specific for special events are Pre-release Promos, which are alternate art variant cards released specifically to tie in with the Pre-release for that set.

I do know that some official Pokemon leagues give out special League Promos. These are just direct re-prints of already-existing cards with a special stamp on them or a special Holo pattern. You could probably find out about that more from someone who has experience in that department, a Play! Pokemon professor.

3. As far as I know, the only official Pokemon shops would be Pokemon Centers in Japan. I have never heard of an English/American card shop specifically for Pokemon/ run by the Pokemon Company International.
The benefits probably wouldn't be much different, though I think that a store for JUST Pokemon might get more patronage from younger TCG players. The reason being why is because many general comic stores get a bad rep from most of the more conservative parents, because they draw in the wrong kind of crowd.

Hope I was able to help!
