Legal Cards at League

What cards can you play in a league? Can you play World Cup collectors cards? What format do leagues follow? Please help because I want to play in a league and I don't know if I have any legal decks/cards.

RE: Leagues

You can use absolutely whatever you want at a league, but you should probably play the standard modified format. That's what most people play.

In leagues, you just have to remember standard/modified if doing a league challenge, but if you want to play for nothing but pride and stamps, you can play the Unlimited format(pokemon cards from any expansion, as long as your deck has 60 cards, no cards that are part of Champions' decks released after every Worlds tourney, no more than 1 Ace Spec, no more than 4 cards of the same name, among other minimum restrictions that do not otherwise put pressure on you to buy the newest cards in order to keep up with the times)...

So no 2011 World Cup reshiphlosion deck?

Oops! I missed one key detail regarding worlds decks: The ban only applies to league challenges and tournaments in the higher levels(Regionals, C/S/Ps, Nationals, and Worlds) but they ARE STILL allowed in ordinary(non-challenge) league play, as mentioned here

^ Jumped ahead of myself there... Missed one key detail that might have not been stated here, but it might have had to be stated outside of the pokebeach domain. :(

I'm fairly certain it's okay to use a Worlds deck at League, but in tournaments it has to be the standard format, which is currently Boundaries Crossed and all sets released later, unless it is in the Extended format, in which case it's Black & White-on. But, if you're just concerned about playing for fun at League, a Worlds deck or a deck with rotated cards (cards not allowed in the standard formats) should be fine.

Edit: Whoops, ninja'd.

Leagues do not have a specific format. You can play any card you want, including World Championship (World Cup) cards. If you are using World Cup cards, you should always ask your opponent to make sure that's okay with them, as the back of the card is different than other cards. It's a good idea use sleeves with these cards, so the back of the card isn't visible. You should also inform your opponent when you're using a deck that isn't in the most recent format (Boundaries Crossed-On), as that's the format most people will want to play in.

The general rule of thumb is anything goes in a league, but you should usually inform your opponent if your deck has anything unusual in it.

Hope this was helpful to you!

Thanks again for the clarification. I really want to play with my Reshiphlosion deck while I still save for a miltank deck. :)

As long as you have sleeves that you can't see through (if you have different card backs).

Most people do use league to test out new decks for modified tournaments.
Which could get interesting soon since the rotation is on it's way.

Most players at League will either be practicing for Standard/ Modified tournaments or playing "fun" decks which may or be not be Unlimited. That said, it really depends on who you're playing against and what they would prefer. World Championship cards are not legal for tournament play, but so long as your sleeves aren't transparent, are usually acceptable at League. Some Leagues (including the one I go to most often) will even allow proxies for the purprose of testing decks. If you're thinking of buying a certain card, but it's expensive, playing with proxies is a good idea to test your deck and see how you like it before spending a lot of money.
