Chapter Three: Twilight and the Mysterious Murder Machine

Dear Princess Celestia,

I am writing to you to report my findings thus far into the mysterious giant Rarity and I discovered. I have dubbed the creature Regigigas based on its speech - that is the only thing it says. Regigigas is highly intelligent and, loathe as I am to admit it, extremely dangerous. Despite the holding spell I have placed on him, he went into a rage yesterday and killed Fluttershy's pet rabbit after he kicked her. When Fluttershy struck me in frustration, Regigigas turned on her and nearly killed her before I was able to subdue him.

The residents greatly fear Regigigas, and they have begun to shy away from me because of it. When they find out what he did to Fluttershy, I fear they will treat me the same way they used to treat Zecora. They may not try to drive me out of town because of what they think Regigigas will do to them, but they will certainly treat me poorly.

Or maybe they won't, and that scares me even more. Maybe they'll fear me so much that they'll begin to throw themselves at my hooves so I don't sic Regigigas on them. Maybe instead of forcing me to leave, everypony will leave instead. I don't want that, Princess! I need your help in showing Ponyville the kindness that Regigigas shows me. He may be 12'02" tall, but he's amazingly gentle. He minds himself while he's in the library. He hasn't broken anything. He doesn't terrorize Spike. And in regards to me, his loyalty is second to none. Rainbow Dash has nothing on him. It's so reassuring, lying in his arms. If I listen close, I can hear something going on inside of him. It's not breathing, but something else that I can't quite put my hoof on. Whatever it is, Princess, it makes me feel so... calm. At peace.

And those...things on the end of his hooves. They're magical. By the stars, I swear when he touches me, it's unlike the touch of any pony. He's the first one to have petted me and I'm amazed at how...incredible it feels. Maybe it's just feels good because it's new to me. I really hope not.

Sometimes, when I get cold at night, Regigigas will come over and warm me up with his hands, and I just want to melt. He's really amazing, Princess, but he's only amazing towards me.

I can't yet figure out why he goes into seemingly random acts of murder. One minute he's fine, and the next he's got somepony's blood on his hooves. If there's anypony who can help me out, it's you. If you can help with anything... anything at all... please let me know.

Your faithful student, Twilight Sparkle

Twilight took a minute to proofread her letter. Not finding any, she magicked the scroll to Spike for delivery. "In the meantime, I think it's time to do some research into...dat magic", she chirped. But how to test it without murdering anypony? She couldn't ask her friends for help. She didn't want anypony around in case Regigigas went berserk again, and if her hypothesis was correct, she'd be in no mood for company once their research was over.

She awakened her murder machine and led him outside, where she mounted him. Don't take it personally, she reassured herself. You'll show them. One day at a time, Twilight.

She decided they would do their training in the Everfree Forest. Zecora was presumed dead based on what Rarity had told her, and nopony else would set foot inside that creepy place, especially now that Rarity had told everypony that Regigigas came from the ruins there. It would be the perfect opportunity to be alone with her mechanical mayhem monster.

As the two walked through town, Twilight paid special attention to how the residents reacted to Regigigas. Most ran and hid. Some stared in awe. Some stared in fear. Some of the ponies who had lost loved ones or their homes (or both) in Regigigas's initial attack on Ponyville shot Twilight a look of disgust and hatred. But Regigigas paid none of them any mind. He plodded through town, following Twilight's directions implicitly. She couldn't bring herself to try to convince them he wasn't who they thought he was. Not yet.

When they reached the entrance to the Everfree Forest, Twilight teleported herself to the ground. The forest was still suffering from Regigigas's rampage. I can't believe he did all this, Twilight thought as she surveyed the damage. Rows upon rows of trees were nothing more than melted stumps, and she could still see prints in the ground from where Regigigas trampled through on his bloodthirsty quest to kill Rarity. As terrible as the carnage was, Twilight was very impressed with his skills, and she started to feel tingly all over. She'd waited long enough. It was time for magic.

Twilight started by gathering what information she already knew, and created a mental list:

- capable of using fire magic
- capable of using electric magic
- EXTREMELY STRONG <3
- apparently can run very fast, though I have never seen this myself
- kills randomly misunderstood
- fun to cuddle with
- fun to be petted by
- loyal to the extreme

Not a bad list, Twilight surmised. Time to expand it. She decided first to see what the scope of his magic was. She saw first-hoof that his fire and electric magic was powerful stuff, so there was no need to test its power. "Regigigas," she began, "I'm going to do some experiments just to see what else you can do. By doing this, I hope to learn your strengths and weaknesses so I can better inform everypony of what they can and cannot expect of you." She grinned, and Regigigas flashed his blue light. "Great! Now listen to me..." she looked around, making sure nopony was around. "...darling. It is of the utmost importance that you understand that under no circumstances are you to touch anypony other than me. No matter what happens, the only pony I want you to focus on is me. Is that understood, Regigigas?"

Regigigas did nothing for a few moments, then flashed his blue light. Twilight grinned again, very giddy things would finally be going her way. She leapt forward and leaned into Regigigas's strong frame, enjoying the feel of his skin against her mane. She rubbed her hooves over his, feeling those strange extensions and sighing blissfully as they began to stroke her gently.

Twilight Sparkle was in heaven, and without realizing it let out a low, contented moan.

Just then, Zecora emerged from some foliage. "Oh. Am I in the way? I could come back another day."

Twilight leaped so far into the air that she thought she'd literally leapt out of her skin. "BY THE MOON AND STARS AND ALL THAT IS HOLY!" When she landed, she stared, wide-eyed, at the zebra, who just smiled.

"It seems I startled you, purple friend. Accept my apologies; it won't happen again."

After Twilight brought her breathing back to a level resembling normal, she spoke. "Zecora! What are you doing here? I thought you were dead!"

Zecora looked at Twilight, puzzled. "Rest assured I am not dead. Who put that idea into your head?"

"Rarity. We were chased out of here the other day by, well, him," Twilight answered, pointing a hoof at Regigigas. "She told everypony that your house was obliterated, and since nopony had seen you, we all just assumed you were another casualty. They'll be glad to hear you're alive, though!"

"Of my survival skills I am quite proud," Zecora said, moving her attention to Regigigas. She looked him over, then back at Twilight. "Tell me, who is this that makes you moan so loud?"

Twilight immediately turned a deep crimson and resisted the urge to simply teleport out of pure shame. "I'm so sorry, Zecora, I wasn't even thinking, and I didn't even know you were here, and I'm only here because I thought you were dead and nopony would interrupt us and I just wanted to see his magic and--"

"Calm down," Zecora soothed. "I'm not going to tell anyone. I just want to know who he is."

"Oh. Well, his name's Regigigas, and-- wait a second, what did you just say?"

"Your giant beast that accompanies thee - I wondered his identity."

"Oh. Well why didn't you just say so?" Twilight explained to Zecora everything she had learned thus far, taking extra care not to divulge any...personal research she had done. "And so now I'm here. You're welcome to stay and watch if you want."

Zecora shook her head and started to leave. "Though it is clear you are sincere, I'll have to pass, Twilight, dear. I must get home and drink some beer."

Twilight Sparkle smiled. "Save one for me? I have a feeling I'm gonna need one after this is over."

Zecora nodded. "I got ice in my veins
blood in my eyes
hate in my heart
love in my mind
I seen nights full of pain
days of the same
you keep the sunshine
save me the rain"

Twilight looked on, puzzled. "...Zecora?"

"I search but never find
hurt but never cry
I work and forever try
but I'm cursed so never mind
and its worse but better times
seems further and beyond"

"Hey, Zecora!"

The zebra would not be stopped. "The top gets higher the more that I climb
the spot gets smaller and I get bigger
trying to get in where I fit in
no room for a--"

"ZECORA!!!"

"Sorry," she apologized. "Sometimes when I get excited, I spit them rhymes and get delighted. I don't even try to fight it. Farewell."

When Twilight was sure Zecora had finally gone, she turned to Regigigas, anxious to get started. "All right, Regigigas, we'll start easy. I've seen you use magic of two different elemental properties. If you can use any more other than fire and electricity, could you provide a small demonstration on the remains of that tree over there?" Twilight pointed a hoof at the foliage in question, and Regigigas went over to it as ordered. He made a fist, focusing the power of ice into it, and bashed the stump with it. "So he can use ice magic, too," Twilight noted, almost wishing she'd brought Spike along so she would have someone to transcribe her thoughts to paper. "Very interesting! Let's keep working on that area. Do you have any other ice-based magic?"

Regigigas opened his hands wide and pointed them directly at his master. Before Twilight could object, she could start feeling a cold breeze, like somepony had put her in the middle of a snowstorm. As the speed and intensity of the wind grew, the temperature of the air dropped, and quickly Twilight felt chilled to her core. When Regigigas stopped, Twilight shivered uncontrollably despite the moderate temperature of the forest. What in Equestria was that? she thought, glad her mind wasn't affected by the attack. Regigigas scooped Twilight up and enveloped her in his hands, warming them and, by extension, her. She sighed as she continued her mental analysis. Can rapidly switch between elements...certainly useful...

When Twilight had sufficiently warmed up, she leapt back to the ground. "Thank you, Regigigas. Let's move on. Are there any other elements you can use? Water magic, perhaps?" When Regigigas flashed the red light, Twilight frowned. "Oh. Well, anything else?"

Regigigas waved a hand over Twilight, and there was a bright flash. When it subsided, she suddenly felt strange all over. She stumbled in place a little, but the effect wore off quickly. Well, that was weird, she thought. A sickness spell? Interesting... She decided to put it off for now. She made a few more notes in her mind: Regigigas has been behaving perfectly so far. He possesses incredible physical strength. Rather than utilizing energy waves like the typical unicorn, it seems Regigigas prefers to augment his own physical strength with the properties of various magical elements. However, after surveying the damage done to the forest, it would seem that while Regigigas doesn't like using energy waves... or beams in this case... he is still capable of using them. This coincides with Rarity's eyewitness account, and I should do my best to learn more about this unique kind of magic without making anypony die.

Twilight looked around for a suitable target for an energy attack. She didn't know how much damage it would cause, so she made an educated guess based on the fact that the forest was still standing (for the most part) despite the visible damage. She looked up and wondered if anything would happen if she directed Regigigas to shoot it into the sky. Pros: No more damage to the forest, Ponyville would be safe. Cons: Possible obliteration of randomly flying pegasusususes, no telling what would happen to things in outer space. Twilight considered her options and reluctantly decided to aim the attack into the air. She relayed this to Regigigas, who began to obey. Both hands raised, Regigigas began to form a ball of pure energy that steadily increased in size. Twilight stared intently, scribbling notes into her mind.

As Regigigas was preparing to fire, Rainbow Dash soared overhead. She and Twilight locked eyes, and Twilight sprung into action. "Regigigas, stop!"

Startled, Regigigas fired off the energy ball, and it shot up high into the air at an angle. Rainbow Dash darted nimbly out of the way, avoiding being scorched by the move. The pegasus flew down into the forest and landed next to a heavily breathing Twilight Sparkle. "Geez, Twilight, what gives? You tryin' to kill me, or what?"

"What... what are you doing here?" the panting unicorn inquired. "Sweet Celestia, Rainbow, you could have been hurt just now! What are you doing all the way out here?"

Rainbow Dash averted her gaze from Regigigas and back to Twilight. "I'm here to tell you that Princess Celestia is at your house. She wants to meet... him," she said, glancing back at Regigigas. "Since I'm the fastest flier in all of Equestria, the princess sent me to give you the word. You coming back soon?"

Twilight's eyes lit up. Surely Celestia would be able to help with this problem. But I can't go to the princess with an incomplete report, Twilight thought. I have to get more information on that strange spell Regigigas used. Maybe it has a different effect on pegasi? "Yeah, soon. Say, Rainbow, would you be willing to help me out with something? It won't hurt. Or... well, it shouldn't. It didn't hurt me, but I don't know if it will have a different effect on you because you're a pegasus. Shouldn't be a problem, though, since we're both ponies."

Rainbow Dash looked at Twilight, then at Regigigas, then back at Twilight. "It has to do with him, doesn't it?"

Twilight nodded. "It should only last about a minute or two. It's completely painless. All you have to do is tell me any effects you're feeling when under the spell, okay?"

Rainbow Dash looked skeptical, but considering it was for one of her best friends, she couldn't say no. "All righty. What do I gotta do?"

"Stand right there. I'll undergo it too, so you don't feel as weird," Twilight reassured her. "I can also get more data this way. All right, Regigigas," Twilight directed her monster. "If you would be so kind, would you please cast that spell on the two of us that you did before, the one that doesn't make us cold?"

Regigigas waved his hand over the two ponies, and again there was a bright flash. This time, when the light subsided, Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash tackled each other. Rainbow pinned the much weaker unicorn on the forest floor and stood proudly over her, wings splayed wide. Twilight reached her front legs around Rainbow's neck and pulled her down, locking their lips together. W-w-what am I doing??? Twilight asked herself as she inexplicably made out with Rainbow Dash. What's gotten into me, I... don't... Twilight's train of thought was derailed by Rainbow Dash, who began licking at Twilight's horn. Twilight let out a languid moan, and she responded by pulling Rainbow's body closer to her. Goddesses above, this is amazing, why can't Regigigas have a tongue, I... I'm...

Suddenly, there was a sharp whistling noise that steadily grew louder, and somewhere in the distance, something exploded. The tremor brought Twilight and Rainbow Dash back to their senses, and each of them found the other blushing wildly. A scream from deeper within the forest was heard, followed by a crash, and the two decided to talk about what just happened at a later time. "Come on, you two, I think I know what that was!" She ran in the direction of the explosion with Rainbow Dash hot on her flanks, and Regigigas lumbered behind them. Soon, Twilight came across the area that had been hit, and to her horror, her suspicions were correct. Some kind of explosion had collapsed Zecora's new house, and Zecora was inside it. The house was also on fire, and threatened to roast Zecora alive if something wasn't done.

"Regigigas!" Twilight pointed to the burning wreckage. "Help my friend out of there!" Regigigas walked over to where Twilight was, picked her up, and started to walk back towards Ponyville. "Hey, whoa, what are you doing, Regigigas?!" She teleported out of his grip and landed near the wreckage. "Rainbow, come on, help me move this-- whoa!" Regigigas grabbed Twilight again and once again started to leave the forest. Twilight teleported out of his grip once again and made an attempt at helping Zecora, who was being consumed by the fire. When Regigigas grabbed her again, he waved his other hand over her, and Twilight suddenly felt very, very heavy and couldn't concentrate enough to teleport again. Unicorn in hand, Regigigas made a dash for Ponyville, leaving a screaming Rainbow Dash and dying Zecora in his wake.
