Not even going by Samuel's word he wasn't special. Richard visited him because Locke told him too, and Locke was someone who was blinded by his own ignorance and hubris. He wanted to be like Ben, and eventually Jacob. Walt obviously has special powers (1x10 "Special" where the bird flew into the window, and when he communicated with Michael in The Swan), but what are they? Also, how can he help his father "move on" with everyone else? Michael and Walt weren't in the church so that leads me to believe he was unsuccessful, because once everyone has died they appear in the flash-sideways, so unless Walt NEVER died and he NEVER made his father move on, then I'm totally confused.
Michael wasn't in the church because his 'ghost' (the whispers) is still on the island, he did some 'bad things' so he is not allowed to move on.
