What do you think? Is this a worthy and attainable goal?

I don't know how much attainable but is very promising. It might work but there will be lots of inconvenience. We will take some time before we get an opportunity of being so close to Mars.

You gotta have a death wish to do this. For one, the length of the mission—almost 1 and a half years. Second, the danger. Everything about this is quite obviously very dangerous. I mean, look what the article says:

CNN said:
And there’s also concern about radiation exposure. The man and woman whom MacCallum and Tito want to send would likely be a married couple. Because of the radiation risk, MacCallum said, they’d be older and “out of the childbearing years.”

Forget that! :U

There are numerous risks involved with this mission and constant testing needs to be done to know for sure whether this mission is truly safe. What I believe is that they should send some sort of test dummies first to actually know how things might end up working and any problems that might arise from the test mission, or any possible negative effects it can have on the dummies themselves. Engineers can modify the spacecraft/spacesuits after analyzing the conditions. Passing through 100 miles within the planet would be less dangerous than actually landing and stepping out into this foreign environment. Once that mission comes along, precise testing needs to be done and constant modifications need to be made to make sure that the humans are completely safe and their mission is successful.

It's a promising and ambitious project. But it is very dangerous to say the least. Although we know a lot about Mars and we'll probably learn even more in the coming years, sending a manned mission is a completely different story. Tests need to be made and numerous things need to be taken into account.
However, the idea of something such as dummies is not very viable, at least from my perspective. It would work if we were to see if man can survive in space or if man can walk on the moon. But with the distance between us and Mars and the possibility of a long stay there, dummies cannot be relied upon. In such situations, what is needed is the human brain and what it can accomplish under tough circumstances. There are just too many possibilities ans situations for a dummy to produce reliable results, not to mention the extra expenses.
Preparations and precautions can be made and taken. But if mankind goes to Mars, it's gonna be a trip to the unknown, the most dangerous thing we have done until now. No kind of test is enough and there is no guarantee of success. Yes, tests will help, but only to a small extent. The rest is up to the ones brave enough to attempt it.

I think that it would be cool, but I highly advise that NASA backs this guy with their own tech, for the safety of the Pseudo-Astronauts.

I read this recently too - I think it's a great idea as well. The furthest humanity has gone away from the comfort of Earth. Aside from the obvious danger (what are you going to do if something wrong happens halfway to Mars??), the fact that the ship itself is barely bigger than a bathroom, and you're stuck with one other person for 1.5 years... I don't know about that. I think that will have to be the most important part of the project, which they already stated, but like the technology, they absolutely cannot mess up on the selection, and unlike choosing the right technology, it's definitely much more difficult to choose the right couple. Either way, I'd definitely be following this story in the next few years, and hope for the best.
