Metagross from Battle Partners!

I still think they making the right decision. If you have a bunch of different trainers to complete a whole set the archetypes would be so weak and idk gameplay wise that doesnt seem fun. Or if you have few trainers but loads of pokemon for each thatd be interesting gameplay wise but you'd have a bunch of nonsensical pairings like idk Erika's Jigglypuff to say something. I dont mind if there's non canon pairings but if they do it in excess I do stop caring altogether
I completely agree, the fact that they all work together within themselves is really cool and it also allows normal Pokémon to have some of the spotlight too, as long as they don't take up and of the SIR slots, I really don't mind

idk what to tell you but erika having a jigglypuff, clefable, and dragonair fits the character a lot more than her having a shiftry, abomasnow, or cradily. canon legitimately does not matter because what is canon is often worse and more nonsensical than what isn't.

from the looks of things currently, this is going to turn out to be totally untrue. unless they're just pretending to have shown their whole hand, with the number of featured trainers in this set, we're likely to have ample room for at least two more well-supported archetypes assuming they received equal set space to the ones we know we're getting already.

moreover, even lightly-interconnected "pack filler" is better than generic and disconnected pack filler. you aren't getting fewer weak cards that won't see play because of their "right decision" to do this, you're just making sure you get fewer interesting cards in total out of essentially fear that cards you weren't going to play anyway aren't going to be good enough if they have a trainer's name in front of them. in reality, having a trainer's name in front of this metagross line is probably the only thing that could ever make these cards playable, because it would tie them to something else in the set. (do note that i have a pretty sane definition of "playable" to mean "someone might ever want to try using this" and not to describe competitive tournament-winning viability)

Also remember that this was 1998 when we had the anime and 151 pokemon

Nah I disagree. I know a lot of fans cry out for non typing gyms for example and want a theme rather. I personally hate that idea because there simply are pokemon that fit more themes that other, there will always be pokemon that will feel like a "stretch" to fit a theme. If 90% of the trainers in the universe feel an affinity for a type like that is all Idk I like it and prefer it that way. I just like the concept of types in pokemon and for each to have a strong unique identity; through gyms, trainers, moves, etc. If you have outliers like Oleana, Flint and many more thats fine but I prefer the "rule" to be what it is rn

Wow. Didn't think they'd do Metagross this dirty. Could've at least made it Metal type so it would work with Metal Maker.

I don’t understand why the designers are so averse to making a good Metagross which benefits from Metal Maker. If this were a Metal-type it might be a fun rogue deck, but we’re not allowed to have fun apparently

What's the problem? There has never been a set where all the cards use the new mechanic
The problem is that almost all the revealed cards that don't have a trainer are explicitly Pokemon that are well-known for being a specific trainer's ace/popular Pokemon. It's dumb. Of all the 1,000+ Pokemon they could choose,it feels pretty absent-minded to do this more than once, no?

Yeah, i guess is because i love the nonsensical pairings, they are a sort of a "canon" way to discover different dimensions of the characters we love beyond of what is shown in the games. Bulk cards with partners would be VERY different than this garbage.
