Card of the Day: Mewtwo-EX from Next Destinies

I know we already did this one, but I think that given how the format shaped up, it deserves a second review.

1) General Stats of Card?

HP:
At an astonishing 170 HP, and with the fact that Mewtwo-EX is basic, Mewtwo-EX is a powerhouse that is a tank as well. What else could you ask for on such an overpowered card?

X ball:
This is the attack that makes Mewtwo-EX so awesome. It is also the reason that I, Nigel, approve of this card. X-Ball takes the advantage of this formats energy acceleration Pokemon. It is also a straight up counter against Pokemon that require a lot of energy to be able to hit and need energy acceleration to load them such as Reshiram-EX, Zekrom-EX, Magnezone Prime, Reshiram, and Zekrom. Mewtwo-EX works extremely well with the very same energy acceleration as these Pokémon. Some examples are Eelektrik and Typhlosion Prime. That's the big reason why this card is so good. It's attack does 20 damage times whatever type of energy is attached to you and the defending Pokemon.

The energy acceleration is not the main reason why this card is so great, though. There is one certain card, which makes Mewtwo EX to be even better than it would already be. That card is Double Colorless Energy. The minimum energy cost of X-Ball is 2 Colorless energy meaning that with one DCE Mewtwo EX hits for 40 damage. That much damage is enough to donk plenty of popular basics such as Solosis, Oddish, Tynamo, and Cleffa. Combined with Celebi Prime, you can attach a grass energy to Mewtwo in addition to the DCE, hitting for 60 damage on your first turn. That amount can donk even more popular basics such as Cyndaquil, Magnemite, and Yanma.

Because of this certain attack and weakness, Mewtwo-EX is its own enemy, and will be played in many decks as a counter to itself.

PsyDrive:
While X-Ball is the hyped attack on Mewtwo, Psydrive isn’t even a bad attack. It hits for 120 damage and you need to discard any one energy card from Mewtwo EX after that. For the most part, it's an upgraded version of Reshiram and Zekrom's attacks. However, since there isn’t a good energy accelerator for Pyschic energy, Psydrive won't be used a lot. Typhlosion Prime, however, is a way to get the energy back. The problem is, you would have to be playing two types of basic energy, and that would be a pain.

As I said, Psydrive is by no means a horrible attack – in fact, it's actually a really good attack. However, the fact that X-Ball is faster and more powerful is what makes Psydrive so useless. Mewtwo EX would be as good as it is even if it only had X-Ball as its only attack. X-Ball is too good and it makes Psydrive look terrible.

2) What decks does this card work well in?

Mewtwo EX will have a huge impact on every deck of the format because it will be the most played card of the whole format. If the deck hasn’t any techs against Mewtwo EX it will most likely lose to a Mewtwo EX immediately.

As you could see when I was talking about X-Ball, Mewtwo EX can be used in almost every metagame deck. Energy acceleration support Pokemon are the perfect fit for Mewtwo EX because of X-Ball. There are many different Energy Acceleration Cards that combo with Mewtwo EX perfectly. Below are just a few of the possible ways you can play Mewtwo EX.

MEZ: MEZ is pretty much just a variation of Zekrom/Eelektrik (which, by the way, was a major contender at cities) that plays Mewtwo-EX as a tech. As I already stated, Mewtwo EX benefits greatly from the added energy acceleration of Eelektrik, and works great as a late game sweeper.

Mewtwo/Typhlosion Prime: In this deck, Mewtwo-EX is combo'd with Typhlosion Prime as its way of energy acceleration. Some varients of this deck choose to play Prism energy so they can use Mewtwo EX's Psydrive attack and return the needed energy to discard energy back to Mewtwo. I should also note that I don't think that this deck will work out that great. I think Mewtwo will only be played as a tech in Reshiphlosion.

MTC/CTM/TCM/CMT: Mewtwo/Tornadus/Celebi. You start with Celebi and attach a grass energy to Mewtwo with its PokePower. Then, you attach another grass energy or DCE to the Mewtwo to your hand. Then, you play Switch or Skyarrow Bridge to bring up Mewtwo active and swing for ridiculous amounts of early game damage. 40 damage can donk plenty of basics such as Tynamo, Oddish, Solosis, and Litwick for weakness. 60 can donk those and more including Magnemite

Mewtwo/Emboar: Reshiboar-EX is a brand new deck that some people think will become popular with Next Destinies. It focuses on getting Reshiram-EX set up quickly with the help of the ability Emboar from Black and White. Some people have been thinking of Mewtwo-EX being played alone with Emboar. I don't think that Mewtwo would work well with Emboar, nor do I think that Reshiboar-EX will work out. I think this deck idea is totally hype, and won't work out well at all- especially since Emboar is Catcher bait, and once it's Catcher'd up, that's 4 more energies that you can't attach to Mewtwo.

Mewtwo/Gardevoir: This is the single most interesting way that I think Mewtwo-EX will be played. Gardevoir’s ability makes every Psychic Energy attached to Psychic Pokémon count as two Psychic Energy. This means that every Psychic energy attached to Mewtwo EX counts as a DCE. However, it also means that Mewtwo can sometimes use its second attack as well. This is a huge difference because the majority of other Mewtwo EX decks don't uses its second attack. One of the problems that this deck faces, though, is that it has no kind of energy acceleration. I've tryed playing Jirachi and Shaymin in my list, and it works alright, but it doesn't make that much difference.

As a tech: This is how most people will play Mewtwo-EX. While this card is extremely broken, there is no one way to play it that guarentees complete energy acceleration and overall consistency.

3) Final Thoughts + Rating:

Mewtwo-EX is THE card in this format to defeat and every metagame deck should be prepared to play against it. However, there is one deck that 'devours' on the popularity of Mewtwo-EX and doesn’t have to change its game plan that much even with Mewtwo-EX in the format. That deck is Durant. Durant will only grow stronger because the format doesn’t have a 100% great counter against it and it resists Mewtwo-EX. It pretty much kills Mewtwo-EX's attack with Lost Remover and Crushing Hammers which means Durant still has one more chance to show its worth before it is eaten by Heatmor. In conclusion, Mewtwo-EX is an excellent card that should be played in every deck in the format.

Card Rating: 10/10
Card Artwork (Normal): 10/10 = Awesome Artwork on the EX's - Unbeatable!
Card Artwork (FA): 10/10

Sigilyph with break this card. Buffolaunt will run it over.

Those two cards are going to dominate EX's, and combined with garbador, will take out most meta decks.

Haha, dude. You really need to think before saying crap.

i dun see wich boffulant u talkin abut?

Sigilygh is no good.

I think he means the one from Dragon Blade/Blast that does 60+60 damage if the defending pokemon is an EX, but I don't see how that helps. There are way better cards that can do more damage that that.

I believe he's talking about the Bouffalant (and Sigilyph) that just got released in Japan in the Dragon sets. (The anti-EX cards). Regardless, please try to avoid these back-and-forth discussions in CotD as much as possible.

Edit- Trainerhan1 ninja'd me.

What does ninja'd mean. :(
Anyway, Tornadus can just take care of sigilyph in CMT. And Zekrom or Thunderus can just take care of sigilyph in Zeels.

I was making a point, and I'm not sure about that because he does the same damage as regular Zekrom and Reshiram with no repercussions along with a built in eviolite.

Garbador (new one [mentioned earlier]) shuts down the eels though, and if you aren't built up enough, two hits with Buffoluant (plus power for Zekrom) and their both ko'd, same with tornadus.

And if you say, I'll just catcher garbador, what's stopping me from catchering you?

Tool Scrapper kills Garbador. People don't seem to realize that. Anyway, back on topic. IMO, Mewtwo is more of a tech in every deck. The cool thing about it is the more popular it gets, the more popular its counter gets. (Mewtwo)
Oh also about Afro Bull doing as much damage as Reshiram and Zekrom, that's only to EX's, so 120 ain't gonna do much. Also, there's a little thing I like to call power creep.

And I was talking about Afro Bull/ Dragons against EX's.
Yeah, so was I. EX's have way more hp than 120, so Afro Bull isn't going to ohko the only thing it can attack, therefore making it a bad card. Garbador's ability only works if it has a tool.

Ah, I see the garbador thing. It's not perfect, but if played right it can do some damage to Eels.

Yes, Afro bull in general isn't a great card, but he's better against EX's, which was my point.
