So here is the basic news of it,Motorola and Washington Judge David Shaw are suing Microsoft for using one Motorola's patented wi-fi technology. And they are trying to get all slim models of the Xbox 360 banned from being imported to the US.Now of course Motorola isn't nearly as big as Microsoft so we have nothing to worry about right?Wrong,in fact this case has already led to the ban of the 360 and Windows 7 in Germany. Now i'm going to leave this open for discussion now so feel free to discuss the legal battle between these two corporations.Who do you think is right?

Xbox and Windows banned in Germany(IGN)

Well, first I had to make sure I wasn't half asleep when I was reading this. Now that I have proved sufficiently that I'm perfectly fine, down to business.

First let me begin by saying I'm impartial. I don't own anything XBox or Motorola related.

Is this going to affect people with existing XBoxes? No it isn't; it's just going to hinder future produced ones that have this specific feature. There are ways around this - for example, use a different kind of Wifi adapter.
Now if it goes through, what kind of repercussions will this have? You can either adjust the existing XBox 360 a bit so that the parts it consists of don't infringe on Motorola, or just live with it and not do much of anything. The latter isn't going to happen, though - the XBox 360 is an incredibly popular system, and Microsoft will not let this get in the way if it ends up going through.

I'm not exactly sure what went on in Germany, or if the ruling was even just, but I'm curious to see what the repercussions are. The final decision on this ruling is going to happen exactly 3 months from now. My hunch is that Microsoft is going to end up winning and will be allowed to sell the XBox still, but at the same time they'll have to pay Motorola something in compensation.

And I just want to get this out there before the topic derails: this is not something to get riled up about.

I fail to see why this is such a big thing, surely this can be sorted out without hurting either company, but it kinda stupid for MS to use Motorola stuff. But why on Earth was MS7 banned in Germany. It makes my head spin...

Depends on which portion. Google owns Motorola Mobility.

I hate Xbox, myself. However, I don't see future ones being banned from the market over this. It's too much of a moneymaker for Microsoft to allow that to happen. Likely, they make some kind of deal or come up with some type of fix to exploit a loophole in the ban like DNA pointed out.

Motorolla keeps getting into lawsuits. They got into one with NexTel some time ago after cellphone and radio frequencies. It did a number on emergency dispatch and communication systems because things had to be rebannded and upgraded.
