You're doing really good!
But 600x100 is WAY too wide when the height is only 100.
My favorite sizes are:
380x120
450x150
400x125
500x175
but sometimes I make my banners according to how big my render is, for example if you can see my small green flygon banner, it's shorter than the other 2 because the render is short. Because resizing makes the quality worse.

It is, but after I added a border it makes it 382x122 I think, if you right click an image and go to properties, you can get all info about it.
if you saved it as an .xcf then you can go to image > canvas size > unlock the little chain thingy and make the width smaller.

I always save as gif. I think that is the best one.
By animations do you mean having pictures on it? (Sorry I'm still new to the art thing!)
