Yes, Tabitha has always been a guy, the anime removes any doubts about this. He used to be a freaking scary bad-ass admin, however, and now he looks short, round and almost comical. As much as I dislike the new Tabitha, I can see why they went the direction they did with both teams and I like what the changes have done to the rest of them. Team Aqua look like legitimate pirates ready to raid, pillage and plunder. The dark skin tone seems kind of random but it does make them appear to be more exposed to the open and gives a foreign impression as if they are from tropical islands and not the main land. Archie looks great and scary, Shelly's hair color changed but this one fits and she looks awesome, and Matt is as ripped as ever, just with an actually scary face now. They look fit and downright amphibious, actually suited for their much-loved water. The grunts still look like, well, lowly pirates. Team Magma is understandably getting mixed responses. People are complaining about Maxie's "nerdy" glasses or Tabitha's new size and shape like I was. What I'm getting from this is that in contrast to Team Aqua's pirate look, Team Magma actually look like geologists now. In Emerald, where the two teams actually did different things, Team Magma appeared much less frequently than Team Aqua did, but they also always appeared in a large group, while Aqua sent out small raiding parties. Magma work more like secretive scientists, spending their time drilling into a volcano or using a meteorite as an energy source. Maxie having glasses makes him look slightly less mean I suppose, but he looks a lot more like a leader now compared to his hooded grunts. On that note, the jackets on the admins and Maxie also give an air of science and, well, indoors. In the end it does makes sense for Tabitha not to look like a ruffian anymore. Courtney, who I didn't even know previously existed as she didn't even appear in Emerald (I first played Sapphire), does look a lot better than in Ruby, at least. She may have what I call "Animal Crossing horns," but at least she has just as much of an identity as Tabitha now. The grunts pretty much look the same, like Aqua. I'm glad they didn't stray too far from original designs. So basically these new designs are kind of shocking but they're mostly cool and they really fit and emphasize the contrast between the two teams and their methods, something I really like. I hope that the games actually have somewhat separate plots and the teams have different plans and tactics like in Emerald, rather than having Team Aqua trying to make a volcano erupt for literally no reason other than because that's what Magma does in the other game. I mean seriously, you're blowing up a volcano and spewing lava in all of the surrounding towns just so that the small crater can fill with water and you can keep a few fish in there? That is downright redundant and mad. I'm calling you out, Archie from Sapphire.
Sorry about the long over-analysis, as you can see Team Aqua and Team Magma are my favorite villainous teams, appearing in my favorite generation of games.
I am also excited for Mega Sceptile and the other new stuff, I'm just kind of obsessed with the villains of this generation and their appearance too.
