New player would appreciate some advice

Hi, my son and I started playing Pokemon every week at the local game center. It's pretty laid back and we have fun. My son's deck is pretty good, and mine's ok, but I'd welcome any advice on what I could do differently.

We typically go to pre release parties and add a booster pack here or there. When we go to prerelease parties or local tournaments, my son always pulls EX cards; I don't have his luck.:) What's cool is he has started trading some of his cards for cards to help my deck. For an example of his luck, at today's tournament, he cam in second and won 4 booster packs. He got a gold edged Emporean and Latios EX.

So, here is my deack, it is ok in our small market but I have found I either do very well with it or I simply can't draw either an energy or pokemon, depending on which I need.

Here is my deck:

21 Energy

Trainer:
superior energy retrieval 2
cheren 2
frozen city
escape rope
energy retrieval 2
energy search 2
max potion
eviolite
cilan
gold potion
great ball
pokemon communicationm

Pokemon

Kyurem EX 2
While Kyurem
Kyurem
Evee 4
Flareon 3
Glaceon 2
Vaporeon 2
Leafeon 1
Druddigon
Boufflant
Articuno EX
Reshiram
Durant
Reshiram EX

In listing the cards, I think my Trainers need work, as some of them never get used, and probably need to be removed. I may have gone a little crazy with the Evees, as well. The way we work on our decks is by slowly upgrading when we buy booster packs or my son gets good pulls from prize packs.

Again, thanks for any advice or condolences :)

Hi,

I think you have too much energies in your deck. The common ratio is around: 12-15 energies, 30-35 supporter/item and 10-15 pokemon.

For supporters, I suggest you this line: 4 professor juniper because it's the best draw we have for now, 4 N because it can disturb the opponent's hand and let you refresh your hand, 3 skyla because you need to search your items to setup or search your ACE and 2 other supporters of your choice between colress, bianca and cheren.

You'll have more consistency in your deck with this line of supporters. Normally, you'll be able to draw at each turn.

For items, if you play plasma pokemon, you'll need some team plasma ball. In a deck, you need some items to search for any pokemon. It can be plasma ball or ultra ball it depends of you deck and sometimes level ball if you play eevee for example. The staples are pokemon catcher, balls, hypnotoxic laser with virbank city gym (for 30 damage between each turn). The other items will depend of you deck.

For pokemon, I suggest you to stay with only pokemon that can attack quickly for 1-2 energies because you don't want to waste all your ressources on only 1 pokemon. If this pokemon is KO, you have nothing left. So a pokemon with an attack of 1-2 energies is easy to setup and let you prepare other pokemon on your bench. New players will play pokemon who deals a lot of damage but this attack needs 4 energies. It's almost impossible to setup this attack without energy acceleration like blastoise from boundaries crossed or emboar from black and white.

For your ACE, gold potion is okay but not the best ACE. ACE is just a one of in a deck so you have to choice the ACE that will help you in any situation. Computer search, dowsing machine and gold potion are this kind of ACE but computer search and dowsing machine are better because they let you have a better setup. If you have a better setup, you'll be faster and you can attack more quickly. It's the key in pokemon: check the best energy/damage ratio. That's why landorus EX, darkrai EX and thundurus EX are so popular. For 1 energy landorus does 60 damage, for 3 energy darkrai does 120 damage, for 1 energy thundurus does 30 damage and give you energy acceleration.

I hope it helped you!

Thanks for the advice, stopped by the store on the way home and picked up some booster packs and got a hypnotoxic laser and virbank city gym in my two packs. My son is at his Grandmothers and although I offered to open his two packs, he declined :)
