New to Pokemon... What's Sets are Legal?

Hello there people. I just started playing Pokemon TCG game, but have an extensive knowledge of the video game (not that helps much) and I've been playing Magic the Gathering for over ten years so I thought I'd start playing this with my friends. I'm wondering what sets are legal and for how long. Do they cycle like Magic does every three months a new sets comes out? and what type of formats are there? I've heard of Modified and Unlimited.

I'm currently sitting on a playset of Meloetta EX and half a playset of Mew EX and Mewtwo EX and would like to build a deck around that. I saw a deck list on this site that was from four months ago that interested me solely because it ran both Mew EX and Meloetta EX, but I'm not sure if it will still be legal for Modified play and for how long.
 
Everything from Next Destinies to X&Y are what's legal right now. Pokémon typically rotates every September.

Well, here in Pokémon sets rotate after each Worlds that are in August.

Right now sets that are in format (legal) are:

  • Next Destinies
  • Dark Explorers
  • Dragons Exalted
  • Boundaries Crossed
  • Plasma Storm
  • Plasma Freeze
  • Plasma Blast
  • Legendary Treasures
  • XY Kalos Starter Decks
  • XY Base Set

And there is also Unlimited, which includes all sets that have been released.

They do rotate, mostly in August-September after each Worlds.
And it depends, they don't always rotate the same amount, but so far, we think that it could be Boundaries Crossed-On or Plasma Storm-On.
 
Thanks for the help. I didn't want to start building a deck just to find out parts of it weren't going to be legal unless I played Unlimited format.

One last question. Is it normally the older sets that get rotated out? Next Destinies, Dark Explorers and the Dragon sets.... would they be worth buying if I were to play in Modified or should I stick with the X/Y and Plasma series?

It depends in which deck you want to use, some use old cards, others use new cards, like Fairy or Fairy with Techs, or Plasma Decks. But the good thing is that there are reprints of the old cards, so it's up to you. You still have some months to use the old cards.
