It has been years since i last played this game. What does the HS-on mean and what cards are illegal to use????

HS(HGSS)-on means that you can play any cards released from the HGSS set up to the most recently released set.
This also means anything released before HGSS is 'illegal' to use.

Pretty much yeah, you can still use them for fun just not in a tournament

Yeah, sorry.

An easy way to tell if a card is legal is if the year it was printed is 2010 or 2011 (or, now 2012).

All cards before HS, starting with Arceus, are not legal for tournament use.
