Newcomer help?

Howdy. I haven't played Pokemon TCG in a long while. Years, in fact.
I'm really only used to the cards that were originally put out. I remember Fossil and Base; I have no idea what half of the things that are talked about these days are, so excuse me if this is common knowledge.
Yesterday I decided to go out and buy a pack of cards. I got a pack of new ones, I can't remember what it was called or anything, but I got a card with a Pokemon called Entei.
Now, in the cards that I'm used to, in the bottom right corner, there's a symbol indicating rareness. (Common is circle, Diamond is uncommon, Star is rare, etc.). But on this one, there was just the number 34. What does this mean?
 
Is it a POP Entei of a Promo Entei. If it is Promo, there is no rarity symbol.
 
You can buy Entei in a pack?
huh, I didn't know that. It wouldn't be a Nintendo Promo? I'll check

Nope, A good ol' fashioned WOTC Promo. Which pack did you get anyways? I mean, I have one, but I didn't know you could get them like that. Also, that card isn't all that new, its almost 8-9 years old.
 
The newest packs you can get now are ones that say "Diamond and Pearl" on the front and that come with 10 cars per pack. Along with saying "Diamond and Pearl" on the front, they will say Mysterious Treasures, Secret Wonders, Great Encounters, Majestic Dawn, Legends Awakened, or Stormfront. Then next month theres the new "Platinum" set.

I think what he got was some special pack that stores sell with one random promo in the front and like 30 other cardsthat I dont knowwhat they are. I've seen what hes talking about, cant really explain it in detail too well.

No. It was the Entei promo that came in a clear packet along with an advertisement card. As I recall it was for Pokemon 2000 the movie (given out at theaters with the ticket).

I thought that Ancient Mew was for Pokemon the Movie: 2000, and Entei was for Pokemon 3: The Movie. Entei was a key figure in the 3rd movie, but he hadn't been released by the 2nd.
