Card of the Day: Ninetales from Dragon Blade/Dragon Blast

Ninetales - Fire - HP90
Stage 1 - Evolves from Vulpix

Ability: Bright Look
Once during your turn (before you attack), when you play Ninetales from your hand to evolve one of your Pokemon, you may switch the Defending Pokemon with one of your opponent's Benched Pokemon.

[R] Cursed Flame: 20+ damage. This attack does 50 more damage for each Special Condition on the Defending Pokemon.

Weakness: Water (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

This looks to be a pretty solid card. combo it with roserade and it can do 120 damage on one energy. Or use it with Amoongus. There's also that whole bright look thing, too. Sure, its not as easy to pull off as a catcher, but you can use it through vileplume lock.

This card can very easily be used with Devolution Spray as an extra catcher sorta thing. You can play it down 8 times with the use of 4 Devolution Spray, up to 12 with Junk Arm. It would work very well in Tyram/Reshiram decks since they already use Roast Reveal Ninetails. Ninetails will definitely see some play, probably as a 1-of.

I like it as its own deck, and here's why:

Its Ability is ridiculous. Remember Luxray GL LV.X last format? Yes? Well think about the same thing... except it can evolve on the bench. It has one more retreat, but hey, it has a really nice attack too.

There are so many ways to use its attack. For just one energy, Ninetales can attack for upwards of 170 damage, and can get to 120 without a ton of effort. Think things like Amoonguss or even Torkoal UL (or both at once to try and hit 170, which with PP gets 2 prizes on an EX). I know it's situational, but with Devolution Spray (which I'm assuming will function the same as Hyper Devolution Spray, unless there's some translation that says otherwise that I haven't found), Amoonguss and Ninetales can be reused at will.

Something else that would be interesting would be a Vileplume-based Ninetales deck. With Vileplume blocking all Trainers, the Catcher effect is limited to your side only. You don't get the benefit of Devolution Spray, but with a second attacker– say, BenchTini– this deck could function at a fairly high level with a large amount of disruption.

I'm thinking about it as a Vileplume-based deck. Get that thing up there and stall with Bright Look. Then bench Roserade, maybe some Amoongus, and for sure Houndoom Prime and just try to get OHKO's all day. It can easily stall, and with Seeker it can re-use some abilities. Plus with EX's running around, the Poison from Roserade/Amoongus can easily net some OHKO's.

@Scizor you don't need PP because of poison

This is a buffed Leafeon readjusted for our format. Leafeon hit 110 fairly easily in its format when that was the magic number, and now Ninetales hits 130 which will still be a magic number when it comes out, or if you are lucky even 200 (poison+burn). The ability is easily worth teching it into plume decks, but past that it won't see play besides Tyram or some other build that makes use of Roast Reveal Ninetales. It's fantastic where it can be used, but it won't be a 1-of in every deck.

On it being it's own deck, I don't see it right now. 90 damage is too easy to hit consistently and Leafeon didn't ever see much play when it was out. Tech it into decks or use it as a secondary attacker but it won't see any major play as its own deck. I wish it would but it won't.

Honestly, I prefer the non-Vileplume varient of this deck, as dumb as it sounds, trolling with Devolution spray, Defender and PlusPower sounds too fun to pass up, I'm not saying I won't test the Vileplume varient when I get the chance, though. Now on to the review.

90 HP is meh, it need stuff like Max Potion or Defender to keep it alive.

Being a Stage-1 I see it being fairly easy to get out, provided they don't K.O. your Vulpix.

It has Luxray's Poke-Power as an Ability (minus the whole needing to be active thing), what's not to love about that?

It's attack combos well with stuff like Roserade UL, Amoongus ND, Houndoom Prime UD, Torkoal UL, and pretty much anthing that applies Special Conditions.

Water weakness kinda hurts seeing as Kyurem 2HKOs you, I boo at no resistance. One retreat isn't bad since it can retreat for the 1 Energy being used to attack with.

Over all, I'd give it a 8/10, it's a great card, but don't you think it could use more HP?
