I was teching 1-1 Scizor in Magnazone and it worked pretty well.

Also, if you don't have room for Scizor, you could just use Shuckle, although that would be stopped by Dialga decks which are very popular.

but i've never been to a pokemon tournament before so i have no base for this confidence

This is my second Regional, I made top cut with a deck SIMILAR to a starter deck, so don't worry.
