Do you think Macs are worth the money spent on them? My old laptop has been having problems since the start, but two weeks ago the battery broke and it died. I've been asking my dad to get me a new computer instead, but he thinks Macs are too expensive. We used Macs in junior high, and they were easy to use.

You're gonna end up paying ten times as much as you would for a PC with the same specs. It's not worth it.

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

You can just unplug them and disable Plug-And-Play.

You can also go to Hardware Device Manager on your control panel and disable them that way. As of now, I've yet to hear of a script to do it for you.

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

If anyone is familiar with animation or 3D modeling, I'm having a really aggravating ordeal with some model/object file conversions. I have the 1st Gen Pokémon models from PBR saved to my computer, and I wanted to work with them in Blender, but the problem is that they're .fbx files, which Blender and I think a few other programs don't accept. So, I downloaded Autodesk's FBX Converter UI program to convert the .fbx files to .obj, but every time I try to convert, an error appears saying "not enough parameters." I tried DFX and DAE Collada conversions also to no avail… My brother managed to export a model of Alakazam just fine with textures and everything a while back (and did some additional modeling edits in Blender, it was pretty cool), but he had to tinker around with the settings for quite a bit and can't remember what he did. I didn't mess around with the presets because they were for the source file, and there weren't any presets for FBX, if that has any bearing. The models load just fine in the FBX Viewer (without textures), it's just that they won't convert for a reason that's beyond me. Any suggestions? :(

Edit: If anyone knows of a Blender plugin/script(s) that allows .fbx imports, that could solve the problem too, I don't know of any myself.

Big edit: Never mind, I figured it out…I forgot to put the .fbx file in the FBX Explorer queue in the first place. Wow… *smacks self*. I guess that's like trying to draw on an image file without loading it into Paint, haha.

The model looks good though, check it :3 – I'm gonna add some bone rigs, textures, and good lighting to this bad boy, if I have some extra time I'll see if I can do a custom animation too.

(Continuing my Satellitite Problem question or thread) Zyfflair: I have DIRECTV XD. Have not had any trouble since Wednesday but still don't know why it happened except for the possibility that the box got too hot. I read in the instruction manual that if it gets to hot it will go into standby mode and I get an error saying the card is not valid but We have moved it in front of the TV and is working fine. We have a DVR and if the DVR is awkward or gets to hot it stops working. Kind of in the same fashion that the XBOX does. If the XBOX gets to hot it will do that or even start a fire or even blow up which has happened in extremely rare cases.:)

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

... the box overheats? I'm sure that's not a very common occurnace. I definitely think you should try to get a replacement, just to make sure.

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

Anyone know a good tablet that's not very expensive? I'm looking for a tablet, but I don't have 500 dollars to spend on one.

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

I never bought one, but here's a good place to browse for them: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=2557&Tid=13681&name=Tablets

Try the Samsung Galaxy Tab, I had it for about a year and it was really nice, never really let me down in my use of it.

Are you looking for good or great? You can get Android 2.0 tablet new for $60 or an Android 2.3 for $169.

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

If you look in the right places, a Bamboo Wacom tablet (usually priced $70-$120) can be found for like as low as &40 I have seen. I don't have one but I plan on getting one soon. I hear they are reliable and good for their price. (And the Bamboo brand is just good in general.) Good for anyone who just needs it for art as a hobby. Nothing professional.

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

Quick question about the iPhone.

My brother has the original iPhone and was planning on upgrading to the iPhone 3 soon. I am currently in the market for an iTouch, and I was wondering...

If he cancels his AT&T plan, can the iPhone still function as an iPod? Will it have wi-fi capabilities?

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

Yes, it will still function as an iPod, Wi-Fi capabilities and everything. Cutting the service is like going into a coverage deadzone, only this deadzone covers everywhere and will never be remedied.

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

Ok, so I can access iTunes and the App Store?

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

Whats the best computer that costs less than 700?

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

There is no definitive "best" computer. It all depends on your needs.

First, you have to decide: What kind of computer do you want? Do you want a dekstop, a laptop, a notebook, a netbook, a tablet, a smartphone, a home media center?

Then, you have to think of what operating system you think you may want most. Windows XP, Windows 7, Ubuntu Linux, other Linux, Mac OS, Chrome OS, Chromium OS, XMBC, Boxee? If a mobile device, iOS, Android, something else?

After these questions, you can cut down on your choice considerably. Let's try a list with some details of these things:

All "can run on" are taking into account what it run well on. All $ is in USD.

Windows XP - Costs about $30 for a used Home Edition | Windows 7 - Costs about $90 for Home Premium (7 machines should have around 2GB to run well)

Desktop - WindowsCan run well on virtually any machine in the last 7 years, and you can build your own. Costs $150-$400 for a good machine
Laptop/Notebook - WindowsCan run on virtually any machine in the last 6 years. Customizable, to a degree. Costs about $200-400 for a good machine
Netbook - Windows (if 7, probably starter edition)Can run on virtually any machine in the last 4 years or so. Customizable, to a degree. Costs about $150-300 for a good machine.
Tablet - Windows XPGood luck finding one. May cost just around your limit. Probably not customizable.

Mac OS (costs around $30 for Snow Leopard, and then another $30 for Lion)

A desktop is basically your only choice for a Hackintosh route. You'll almost definitely have to build this. Costs about... eh, $400-500 for an average Hackintosh. Fairly customizable.

Linux (costs... nothing! [in the vast majority of cases])

Not much to say here. The stats are almost in sync with Windows. Use that table.

Chrome OS - Not available for custom installation

Your only choice is laptop. That will range from $350-500.

Chromium OS - Free of charge

Use the Windows table as a general guide. Be warned, your hardware here is restricted.

iOS - Not available for custom installation (correct me if I'm wrong)

Obviously, you're limited to the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. A blanket cost for these can be from $160-your maximum

Android - Technically free of charge, but not really worth the trouble of custom installation

You have many choices here. Phones, of course, have 2-year contracts at advertised prices Anyway, you have many choices here, ranging from $0-250 for a phone, and $200-your maximum for a tablet.

XMBC and Boxee - Need to run on Windows in some cases, but don't need to be super-powerful for their job.

Obviously, this was roughly made. Just ask for something more refined if you want one.

Oh, and your needs. You have a few tiers:

Basic web-browsing - this includes email, 480p YouTube videos, and anything in between.
Heavy web-browsing - this includes everything from before, plus 720p Netflix, 1080p YouTube, heavy Flash apps like Picnik, and heavy HTML5 apps.
Heavy video editing - includes everything from before, but includes... video editing, and keeping more than a few programs running at once.
Gaming - Parallel to Heavy video editing. Includes everything from the first two, plus... gaming, and keeping more than a few programs running at once.

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

Um. Laptop. Internet Explorer.

I will download Photoshop and Skype.
Not an apple. Does that help?

I don't understand most of what you said.

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

Not a problem, that helps much!

Anyway, that'll fit nicely into heavy web-browsing. I can't personally recommend anything (I'm sure someone else can), but put it this way: You probably don't want to spend over $500.

If you end up shopping for one instead of looking into one of our recommendations, try to get something with at least a 2 GHz dual-core processor and 3GB RAM. Other stuff matters, but not as much as these two. Also, unless you're buying tons of movies/TV shows off of iTunes, you don't need that big of a hard drive (you can probably have plenty of room with less than 250 GB). For brands, you can start with the obvious HP or Dell, but Gateway, Asus, Acer, and others make equally good machines.

RE: PokéBeach Technological Discussion Thread

I'm planning on buying a capture card tomorrow when I go out with my family tomorrow. But having never purchased one before, and none of my friends have either, I don't know what kind to get.

What kind do you recommend?
