On starting/buying and getting to play

Hello guys, I would like to play the tcg live, but i have 0 cards. I was wondering if this is like yugioh where you buy 3 of the same structure deck and you have a semi competitive deck minus some staples.
I was thinking of buying 3 of the fire theme decks from Black and white, is it a good idea or would you reccomend something else ?

Also i really like mew, can he be used as a staple or tech idea ?

Don't buy the starter decks.. the only ok one is Umbreon. Maybe Lucario. The BW ones are bad.

Ok, then how would i start out to make a deck ? Somehow, i wanted to rely a little on my luck, because i like the surprise of opening boosters and getting packs. with would be best to buy and build from ?

I recommend to buy Boosterboxes instead,
Good sets to buy boosterboxes from are HGSS ( Most staple's) and Triumphant ( Best Primes)

Really good decks use cards not available in theme decks, but there are some decent cards in the B/W fire theme deck. A deck you could try to make out of it would be:

3-3-3 Emboar main attacker of the deck
2-2 Herdier these 2 are great for draw if you don't have better cards
2-2 Cincinno these are excellent back-up attackers if you fill your bench
2-2 Simisear this can deal damage to opponent's bench, allowing you to pick of weak pokemon
21 Pokemon
4 Switch allows you to switch out herdier or something if you want to bring in your attacker
4 Energy Retrieval this gives you the energy Emboar discards back
4 Pokemon Communication lets you search out any pokemon, very good card
4 Professor Juniper lets you discard a bad hand and draw a good new one, very good card
4 Revive can be helpful for bringing back basics to set up a pokemon faster the second time
3 Energy Search gets your enegry out faster
16 Fire Energy
16 Energy

It isn't that great a deck and some of the cards aren't that useful (in a real deck you wouldn't need that many energy search, switch, or revive) but it is an okay deck that can be contructed with just two red frenzy theme decks.

Thank you everyone, the HGSS box seems like a good possibility since i want staples XD and i might buy a frenzy themed deck, just for fun :p

I definitely recommend getting an HS Triumphant booster box because of all of the money making cards in the set. Whether you choose to use some of the rare ones is up to you. If you choose to use them that's great and all, but if you choose to trade them, cards like: Yanmega Prime ($50-60ish), Magnezone Prime, ($30-40ish), Gengar Prime ($20), Mew Prime, and Machamp Prime ($15ish) will be great trade bait to get the cards you need.

An HGSS booster box is also a pretty good idea because like previously stated it has some pretty good staples (and also some pretty good primes).

If you have the money I would probably recommend you get one of each because the sets are so playable. But if you have to choose one then I would probably say Triumphant because of all of the high price tag cards that you can use to trade for what you need. I don't know for sure, but I think you're bound to get at least 1 of the good primes.

It is very easy to buy half a deck online for cheap.

2 Juniper
4 Professor Oak's New Theory
4 Dual Ball
4 Pokemon Communication
4 Junk Arm
4 Stantler/Manaphy

Those 26 cards will make any new deck viable. All the cards there put together will likely cost less than $10. The additions to that need to be a) Energy, b) Rare Candy, c) Pokemon Collectors and d) whatever else.

I recently started playing this year. I started the game by simply buying $70-80 dollars worth of staples to form the whole deck. What I tell to you (from experience) is, unless you plan to jump straight into competitive, don't worry about a perfect deck... If you want a stage 2 deck, you will need rare candies, for instance, but you don't NEED rare candies to start playing.

I don't want to be modded for advertising, but I suggest trollandtoad. They made it easy, with $1 shipping (i live in australia) but you can find other places as well. If you attend a local league, it is likely people will trade you stuff.

Edit: I would suggest HEAVILY AGAINST buying one box of each set.

My suggestions are only to buy a) Unleashed Box(es), b) Triumphant Boxes, or c) HGSS starter kit.
HGSS starter kit comes with 2 pokemon collector and 2 pokemon communication (and a booster pack).
Unleashed boxes have tyranitar prime and kingdra prime, among others; as well as rare candy.
Triumphant has all most of the good primes.

HGSS booster box... the only good pull is Collector or Donphan or DCE (which is now a league promo) (sans jumpluff) and you're likely not going to get much.
UD booster box... all the primes are bad (possibly except scizor) and RDL will hardly get you anywhere.
CoL Booster Box... there are no real good cards in this set for starting the game. Pachirisu is trade bait, but the set overall is TERRIBLE.
BW Booster Box... You might get ability emboar or zoroark, but that's about it. Emboar's coming out in a tin soon, and zoroark is already a promo.

My money would be on Triumphant - simply put; if you get a magnezone or a yanmega, people will trade you almost every card you need for them.

Feraligatr and Typhlosion are both in tins; they'll never be that sought-after.

I would recommend buying a booster box, preferably the HGSS or Triumphant set, as Triumphant has all of the BEST Primes, like Yanmega and Magnezone, and HGSS because it has most of the staples (Pokemon Collector/Comunication, PONT, Prof. Elm's Training Method, etc.).

or if you want, you can check out the seller's threads here.
u might be able to buy fully constructed decks.

and then from there, you can test your luck with booster packs and add/ change stuff

Okay, thanks every, ill put my money on triumphant booster box XD and go from there, also like the suggestion of the 26 cards as the body of a deck XD

The best way to start playing is purchasing the the staples online. The ones almost every deck needs are Pokemon Collector, Pokemon Communication, Professor Oak's New Theorey, and Junk Arm. You should decide on what kind of deck you want to run before you buy any cards though and make sure to get a good decklist for it. PM and I will semd you one of my personal decklists.

...that's 22 cards.

Either way, different decklists rely on different cards, but it's a good idea to buy some of the cards people have listed online if you don't get them in boosters.

I'm in the same predicament lol. I was thinking of getting a box of Triumphant since it has a lot of good trade bait and I can easily get what cards I want(especially if you pull yanmega).
