They'll create an extra bag slot for mega stones alone before they forget about mega evolution..
Heck they may find a different method like limit it to 1 stone which can mega evolve any pokemon for simplicity.
Anyway, an item bank would be useful.. RIP all my leftovers I spent weeks gathering.

It would be great if we could at least store 1 of every holdable item in bank for transfer to new games. If cross gen compatibility is an issue for them they could just make a label for which games the items came from and which ones they can be deposited to. Unfortunately though, it looks like I will have to waste hours transfering over items to AS unless they don't have new egg moves and an easy hatch spot like the center of Lumiose.
I think that I'd just migrate my Pokemon like what the others said, but there are some things worth coming back to, like all the little extra features that Pokemon X/Y had. I'm especially fond of the Looker missions.
The games are starting to bore me to, the only time I really started enjoying the game was during the post-game when I started the Looker Missions.
