Suspect Round is lasting until Feb 25.

It is being considered for suspecting due to the massive stats it has in combination with a very solid movepool (giving it an extremely narrow pool of counters) and Tough Claws making up for its inability to hold an item.

Questions for discussion purposes:

  • What are your opinions on Mega Metagross in the metagame right now? Do you agree or disagree with the decision to test it? Why / Why not?
  • If Mega Metagross were to be banned, what would change in ORAS OU? What Pokemon would be more viable? Which would be less viable?

As an offensive player, I find that Mega Metagross places a great deal of restriction on my teambuilding. Rock Polish sets are particularly threatening and are the reason why I carry several Prankster Thunder Wavers. Offense can't actually counter Mega Metagross without resorting to something like Mega Slowbro to set up on Metagross (and even then, it dies to Grass Knot). Scarf Heatran and Keldeo can revenge kill (can't switchin due to Earthquake/Hammer Arm or Zen Headbutt respectively). There are a lot of parallels to Greninja where your check can't actually check it until you know what the fourth move is.

If Mega Metagross were to leave, I think we'd see Clefable as a metagame defining Pokemon. It's currently on the cusp of being one of the most viable Pokemon in OU and is only held back because Mega Metagross can beat it. Other fairies like Diancie, Gardevoir, Altaria and, to a lesser extent, Azumarill, are in a similar situation. Mega Lopunny would likely become the premier offensive mega and would likely be competing with Mega Gallade for that title.

Discuss.

Thank goodness the finally banned the damn thing. I've only encountered it a few times but when I do I find that the only thing that saves me is talonflame and when I don't have it well... I think we all know the result. That thing was literally extremekiller Arceus levels of power (and it had the same bst as it to boot). I'm also very thankful for fairies becoming viable. I also could see Skarmory rising in usage and possibly Mega Aggron to so that the hole that Metagross left is filled. Of course I will also have to start watching out for Sableye since it will then be the highest ranked mega.

Do not compare Arceus to anything, it's greatly underestimating Arceus. Besides, E-Killer is an entirely different Pokemon with the only thing it has in common with Metagross being Attack and Speed investment. Also, do not think Mega Aggron or Skarmory will rise to power; Mega Aggron is still very underwhelming for a Mega and most of the time a waste of the slot, and Skarmory actually saw usage because of Mega Metagross because it could counter some of its sets and check the others. Besides, neither Mega Aggron nor Skarmory are offensive Pokemon, so filling in a spot occupied by Mega Metagross using any of the two is impossible.

Mega Metagross is truly one of the strongest attackers right now, and with its more than solid bulk as well as excellent Speed its threat level is incredible. That being said, I wouldn't outright kick it out of OU. Chances are that in the end I'd decide that, but it's not like Mega Metagross is uncounterable or as game-breaking as some of the other suspects of the previous season were. I've been away from battling recently, so I may miss important things on the metagame, however, so I can't say anything absolute.

Mega Metagross is here to stay:

"The Metagrossite suspect test has come to a close. With 57.3% voting to ban and a 60% vote required to ban a suspect in OU, Metagrossite will remain OU. " Smogon's Facebook page.

3% short lol. Does that mean they'll retest it in the near future?

They should not imo. iirc they had an opposite situation with Aegislash banned by a 62% majority (only 2%) so if they are not retesting banned Pokemon even with that low votes my logic is telling me they won't make another suspect test for a Pokemon that survived a suspect test.
